1 Hilda Herald Hilda United Methodist Church Volume 5, Issue 6 JUNE, 2011 A Great Discovery From the Pastor Three years ago Carolyn and I began a great discovery when we arrived as the new pastor family at Hilda. She discovered an outstanding United Methodist Women s group and she discovered a great adult Sunday school class where people exchanged ideas, and even if they disagreed, they did it with gentleness and respect for those who see it differently. And, as a pastor leading worship, I discovered a great singing congregation (as long as they were singing a familiar hymn!). We both discovered the joy in the 5th Sunday and the Children s Bell Choir. As the pastor, it has been a privilege to have a loving, praying congregation. During some tough moments in our lives such as health concerns and the untimely death of our good friend Craig, we really realized what a praying, loving church this is! I ve always felt that I had many assistant pastors through the loving, praying people that you are. Of course, while I m speaking of pastors, at the introductory meeting I was very impressed with Pastor Suzanne. And, before the meeting was over, I was able to get her to be my assistant pastor and I m grateful for all the special ministries she brought through her loving, spiritual self. Even before I got here, it was a great discovery in reading the newsletters and seeing the beautiful color pictures, stories, and youth news and I even told the folks at North Shore that that was the kind of newsletter they needed (which went over like a lead balloon!) One of the neatest discoveries was a discovery that has happened to me in other churches meeting some unforgettable characters that will live in the scrapbook of my memories. The discovery of what an incredible place Hilda is - the landscape, the stars at night that are so clear, being out of doors in my garden, hunting, enjoying living in the little cabin when we were first here - all of these were great discoveries of nature. This has also been a place where my friends and family have discovered what a joy it is to visit here. Now, for a while the parsonage building project was a painful discovery that I hadn t planned on, but now that bright new parsonage is a wonderful discovery and the fact that the loan we signed is very small is an amazing discovery! Carolyn and I both want to thank those who leant their furnishings and did the decorating and made it a very livable place for us in a short time. Another great discovery Is seeing your former lay leader make a decision to become a pastor. Old pastors wonder who God will raise up to carry on the work. When Pastor Jim McWilliams was in his dying moments, he shared with Wade the message to carry on the good news. I think this helped Wade recognize the fact that he was being called. He is privileged, along with Cindy, Sarah, Ethan and Afton to be the new parsonage family that discovers this wonderful place to be a minister! Grace & Peace, Mal & Carolyn PASTORS INFO Rev. Linda Kesler was hostess and Florence Smith presented the program, Bring a Friend. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments provided by hostess Linda Kesler. Next meeting is June Trinity 10:00 a.m. Hostesses are Betty Bauer & Dee Dee Fiedler; Program leader is Jo Ann Coston presenting a program on Discovering Haiti. MARTHA CIRCLE Martha Circle met on Tuesday, May 24th at Teresa Walker s office in Mason. Connie Witt, Cindy Spencer, Carol Sattler, Teresa Walker and Jan Appleby were present. It was decided to give a monetary gift to our high school graduate Zach Graves. Discussion was held about other community needs, but no decisions were made. Carol Sattler gave a very interesting and thought-provoking lesson based on the book (a true story) Heaven Is Real Place. Our next meeting will be June 28th in the Hilda Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. United Methodist Women s School of Mission Mt. Wesley July 14-17, 2011 There will be one-day events for those who can t stay for the entire 4 days. 3 Volume 5, Issue 6 Page 3 CALENDAR OF EVENTS JUNE 2011 Thursday, June 2 - Mason Food Bank - 11:00 a.m. to fill boxes for June 13th distribution Sunday, June 5 - Communion Sunday & Pastor Suzanne s last Sunday as our pastor - (next Sunday will be Pastor Suzanne s last Sunday as our Associate Pastor). We will have a lunch in Mal and Carolyn s honor & Suzanne & Paul s honor following the worship service. Meat will be provided - please bring a side dish. Sunday, June 12 - Pastor Mal in the pulpit - this will be his last Sunday as our Associate Pastor. Choir practice after church. Monday, June 13 - Distribute food at the Mason Food Bank - 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Again, we will need some guys to help carry heavy boxes of food to cars Tuesday, June 14 - Trinity UMC in Castell - Jo Ann Coston will be the program leader and Betty Bauer and Dee Dee Fiedler are hostesses. 4 CHOIR SUMMER BREAK! The Hilda Choir will be taking a break after the June 19th service through the end of August. There will be special each Sunday though, with choir members singing solos, duets, etc. If you d like to sing, be sure and let Nanci know so she can sign you up with the date. Pastor Mal enjoys listening to the Hilda Choir at the Cancer Benefit. Background is Virginia Durst and Mona Hyde. The Hilda Choir was asked to perform at the annual Mason Cancer Benefit on April 30th held at Heritage Park. ******************************************************************************************************* ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:00 a.m. (Coffee and always a goodie or two to munch on!) All adults and teens are invited to this great group! Our classes are always thought-provoking, interesting, and something that we can use in our daily living. Discussion that follows these lessons is always lively and interesting. We d love to have you join us!! We are beginning a new series by Rev. Adam Hamilton entitled Why? This is a very thought-provoking series with a lot of discussion. It will be led by Rev. Tom Gibbons - come on out on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. and join us! 4

Wesley church camp. She ll also be helping with the Meals on Wheels program in Mason. Sarah will be a 7th grade cheerleader in the fall. Kasey will be a Varsity cheerleader at MHS in the fall. She was also honored at the Academic Excellence Banquet on May 17 and par cipated in FFA Horse Judging. She ll be going to Cheer Camp, rodeos, and the family s annual vaca on to Pt. Aransas this summer. Chase ran track for F burg Middle School and won a silver medal in the 200M Dash and a gold medal as the lead off man in the 1600M Relay (he ll also be heading to the family reunion in Pt. Aransas). Courtney Brown was selected to represent the sophomore class of MHS at a Leadership Conference in San Antonio this summer & is also playing on a So ball League in F burg. 8 Ask the Lord to Bless Your Plans We may make our plans, but God has the last word. You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives. Ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out. Proverbs 16:1-3 Yes, plans change. Things change. And whether we know it or not, if we submit to God s will and seek to follow him, those changes can be so much better than the plans we had for ourselves. Please understand that my plan thirteen years ago was to move to Mason County, build a financial advisory practice that served clients throughout the state, and manage various offices while I lived the good life in Hilda. That plan was on a very good track, but brought with it things that were not in my plan - more and more time away from my family; my ego, that had to constantly be fed by success; my priorities that changed as a result of that need to feed. At some point, however, I realized that my focus was not on being a servant of God, or even a servant of my family; rather I had become a servant of Wade. You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives. I began to pray. I prayed for more time with my family. I prayed for courage and guidance in serving the Lord. With each of these prayers, I thought that I would be rewarded with a money making machine of a business that pretty much ran itself, giving me more time with my family and a better focus on serving God. Well, God knows the desires of our hearts and the plans that he has for each one of us. I had been asking the Lord to bless my plans as it says in verse 3 of Proverbs 16. I was finally given the courage to respond to the call to ministry that I knew had been there since While the means to the end did not match what I had assumed God would do for me, the fact is that my deepest desires are being blessed by Him. Now, here we are getting ready to serve the congregation and community that has been so instrumental in my journey as a Christian. My family and I are truly blessed to once again be part of Hilda United Methodist Church. Our ties and our love for you all runs very, very deep. Cindy and I were married at Hilda, each of our children were baptized at Hilda, and it was at Hilda that I received my call to ministry. Of course I have been reminded by several that even Jesus had difficulty serving in his hometown. (Mark 6:1-6, Matthew 4:13-16, Luke 4:16-30) But Jesus hometown was not Hilda, Texas. I am comforted in knowing that I will be coming to a church that loves my family and me as much as we love y all. God bless you, Pastor Wade 8
