Hilda United Methodist Church HILDA HERALD MARCH Sunday Worship 11:00 AM Sunday School 10:00 AM Wednesday Prayer 9:00 AM PASTOR S INFO Rev. Wade Powell Ranch Rd. 783 Mason, TX Cell: arcwade@gmail.com Open Hearts Open Minds Open Doors NEW PROGRAM IN MASON YOUNG LIFE What is Young Life? Young Life is a world-class ministry for adolescents. Our staff and volunteers enter the world of kids, focusing on what matters to them fun, adventure, friendship and a sense of significance. In doing so, we earn the privilege of talking to them about something that we think matters most of all the truth about Jesus Christ. Our goal is to plug kids into the church for life. We want all of our staff and volunteers to be active members of a church community. Young Life is nondenominational and works with all major denominations. We have something to offer believing kids too the opportunity to join with folks who want to impact their school for Christ. What is Young Life Specific to Mason? Our vision in Mason, Texas is to provide opportunities for every adolescent in Mason to meet Jesus and follow Him. The Church is losing its younger crowd and teenagers don t want to come to Church. If the teens won t come to Church, then the Church must go to the teens. This is what God did for us when we could not go to Him due to our lost state in our sins (Rom 5:8). This is what Young Life does: Young Life is an expression of the Church in Mission. Young Life is not the Church. (by Bob Mitchell, former Young Life president). We go to where they are, earn their trust by loving them where they are, tell them about Jesus, then keep loving them no matter how they respond. Teens are in desperate need of social capital from adults (i.e. they need adults willing to pour into them without an agenda or anything in return). The future of the church and community depends on it. Who is Running Young Life? Young Life is founded on Jesus Christ. Just as Christ is head of the church (Col 1:18), He is also head of any Young Life program. The next layer involves the area director and all volunteer leaders. My name is J. W. Harle, and it is an honor to be called by God to function as the area director in Mason. My wife is Bonnie, who will function as a volunteer leader, and we have a 21-month-old daughter, Bree. We arrived in Mason on February 13 th and are thrilled to be here. We are praying and searching for volunteers in the community from all the local churches to join us in this ministry as leaders, committee members, and prayer warriors for the souls of our youth. 1

Rev. Wade Powell Releases New Book Wade Powell, pastor of Hilda United Methodist Church, has released a new book designed to enhance the Lenten journey. In his book, The Way of the Cross: A Companion to Lenten Devotion, he takes us on a journey with Jesus from his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane to being laid in the tomb. The book begins with an introduction to Lent. Powell discusses his own Lenten journey and how it has enhanced his relationship with Christ. Because fasting has been a vital part of Lenten devotion for centuries, he also discusses the various aspects of self-denial during Lent. The introductory portion of the book concludes with a chapter on daily prayer. The meat of the book follows the path Jesus takes to his sacrifice on the cross. It is a pilgrimage of the heart that all Christians should make, both Catholic and Protestant. This account is based on the scriptural Way of the Cross as presented in the United Methodist Book of Worship. Each station begins with prayer, followed by scripture, and concludes with commentary by the author. Powell said, this book started with my own pilgrimage as I began preparing myself for Lent. I read through the scriptures and began meditating and taking notes on each of the stations, then ultimately decided to compile it into a book. Powell went on to say that the whole point of Lent is to prepare ourselves for Easter, Easter is the culmination of the Good News of Jesus Christ, while Lent marks the difficult journey that leads us to the resurrection. Without the journey, without the trials and temptations, the message of Easter falls short of the extraordinary event that it is. For Powell, the joy of Easter has become much deeper and prominent when viewed through the lens of Jesus sacrifice. The Way of the Cross is available at local bookstores or by going to the Hilda United Methodist website It will also be available for purchase through Amazon.com and other online retailers in about three weeks. A NOTE OF THANKS A big THANK YOU to James Feuge for the delicious lunch he prepared for everyone before the February Advisory Council Mee ng. He is a terrific cook and if you missed it, you missed a good one! 7

How can you par cipate in Young Life? First and foremost we ask for prayers. Pray that the Spirit would move in the hearts of the teenagers in Mason, and that God would use this ministry to bring ALL of them into His Kingdom and into a local church. Nothing is too big for God!!! Also, we would love for you to consider joining us as a volunteer leader or committee member. This ministry needs to be built on Christ and the local body of believers, not on the personality of the area director. It is my prayer and desire that the community of Mason takes ownership of this ministry and works me out of a job. Then we could do it all over again in neighboring small towns!!! J.W. & Bonnie Harle and their daughter Bree have recently moved to Mason. J.W. is the Area Director of Young Life. **************************************************************************************** MASON COUNTY YOUTH LOCK IN FEBRUARY 23 Mason Community Center The rap group Grits performs at the Mason County Youth Lock-In at the Community Center A comedian entertains the kids at the Mason County Youth Rally held on February 23 & 24. They are meeting on Sunday mornings and should be ready to become members in the near future! If you d like to help out with some snacks before they begin their class, please let Pastor Wade know. 8

Noah's Ark : Everything I need to Know, I Learned from Noah's Ark ONE: Don't miss the boat. TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat! THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark. FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. SIX: Build your future on high ground. SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs. EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile. TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting. YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL Rosemary Davis will begin teaching the youth group Sunday school classes on Jan. 15th. ALL youth are invited to come to the Brandenberger Ess Haus - Sunday school begins at 10:00. This will be for all ages from elementary age to high school with the older kids helping out with the younger ones. Hope all the kiddos will come for fun learning and fellowship! 10 YOUTH NEWS ITEMS Colby Brown recently won Grand Champion with his rabbit at the San Angelo Stock Show. Courtney Brown placed 3rd with her rabbit. Jayde Wi won Reserve Champion over all Angoras at the Kerrville Stock Show. In San Antonio she placed 4th with her doe kid in her class and 10th with her billie kid in his class. At the San Angelo Stock Show she placed 2nd with her billie kid and 6th with her doe kid. She won a $3000 scholarship at Kerrville and ribbons at all places! CONGRATS to all our kiddos who have done so well at the stock shows! Also congrats to Doris & Ruben s granddaughter who has done very well this year and I believe she s won about $10,000 in scholarships! We re proud of all of these young people! Jayde is also playing golf for the first me at MHS and had her first tournament on Feb. HILDA ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The Advisory Council met on February 19th in Fellowship Hall following a GREAT lunch prepared by James Feuge. We had lots of things to discuss. We will be participating in a pictorial directory with First UMC and Art/Trinity UMC - this will probably begin in April & we ll get the info out as soon as we know more. We re also going to update our own directory. Discussion ensued on painting the church steeple, the new copier (when will we get it?), when will the dead trees be cut and the parsonage sidewalk and road completed as well as it s beginning to be time to do a bit of yard work! Pastor Wade went over the Easter week services and you can see the schedule on P. 3 of the newsletter. He also noted that we need someone to continue with the youth group which meets twice a month on a Sunday evening while Herbert is recuperating. Anyone interested, please let Wade know. We found out recently that Viola Balzen left a monetary gift to the church - it will be 6% of her estate, but we won t know what it is until we actually get the check. Don Daniel noted that we only owe a little over $34,000 on the parsonage and of course, discussion was held again on the need for a larger fellowship hall. We have definitely outgrown our current one! Don, as Finance Chair, also noted that our expenses have gone up considerably this year with a full-time minister and insurance costs for Wade and his family (and they are worth every penny of it!), but we do need to let everyone know that with Viola s death, we lost a most generous giver ($1000/month to the church and $300/month to UMW). IF you can, it would sure be nice to give a little extra whenever you can. A couple of suggestions were made - 1) Our monthly parsonage payment to the bank in $460 and perhaps every now and then, some of our members might make one of those payments or a portion of the payment to the bank 2) If you make weekly payments to the church when you are there, think about doubling that amount if you miss a Sunday to make up for not being there. Hilda has never had a Consecration Service as we have always been able to get by without having pledge cards, but that is another idea. Anyway, please think about ways you can help out financially. We ve been here 150+ years and want to continue being here for many more years to come! 10

COMMUNION ON THE MOON, JULY 20, 1969 by Eric Metaxas Forty-two years ago, two human beings changed history by walking on the surface of the moon. But what happened before Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module is perhaps even more amazing, if only because so few people know about it. I m talking about the fact that Buzz Aldrin took communion on the surface of the moon. Some months after his return, he wrote about it in Guideposts magazine. And a few years ago I had the privilege of meeting him myself. I asked hi about it and he confirmed the story to me, and I wrote about it in my book, Everything You Always Wanted to Know about God (but Were Afraid to Ask). The background to the story is that Aldrin was an elder at his Presbyterian church in Texas during this period in his life, and knowing that he would soon be doing something unprecedented in human history, he felt he should mark the occasion somehow and he asked his minister to help him. And so, the minister consecrated a communion wafer and a small vial of communion wine. Buzz Aldrin took them with him out of the Earth s orbit and on to the surface of the moon. He and Armstrong had only been on the lunar surface for a few minutes when Aldrin made the following public statement: This is the LM pilot. I d like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his or her own way. He then ended radio communication and there, on the silent surface of the moon, 250,000 miles from home, he read a verse from the Gospel of John, and he took communion. Here is his own account of what happened: In the radio blackout, I opened the little plastic packages which contained the bread and the wine. I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon, the wine slowly curled and gracefully came up the side of the cup. Then I read the scripture, I am the vine, you are the branches. Whosoever abides in me will bring forth much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing. I had intended to read my communion passage back to earth, but at the last minute they had requested that I not do this. NASA was already embroiled in a legal battle with Madelyn Murray O Hare, the celebrated opponent of religion, over the Apollo 8 crew reading from Genesis while orbiting the moon at Christmas. I agreed reluctantly. I ate the tiny Host and swallowed the wine. I gave thanks for the intelligence and spirit that had brought two young pilots to the Sea of Tranquility. It was interesting for me to think: the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the very first food eater there, were the communion elements And of course, it s interesting to think that some of the first words spoken on the moon were the words of Jesus Christ, who made the Earth and the moon - and who, in the immortal words of Dante, is Himself the Love that moves the Sun and other start. How many of you knew this? Too bad this type of news doesn t travel as fast as the bad does...share it if you ve felt God s love. Ed.note: This was from an I received recently. You can check it out at: communion.asp 11
