3 LIFE AFTER DEATH STEVE C. FERNANDEZ, REFLECTIONS There is a story of a four-year old pretty little girl who was homeschooled by her parents, who were atheists did not want her to know anything about God nor Christianity. This girl named Diane who was their only daughter had never heard the name Jesus. She was not allowed to attend church nor read any Bible. One day Diane became very ill so that her parents took her to the doctor. Hours went by and she was not expected to live and so she was taken to the hospital. After a few hours in the hospital with her parents by her side Diane died. Her parents were devastated. She had not been breathing for a long time when the doctors finally gave up, deciding to quit CPR for even if she was to come back most of her vital organs would shut down on account of having been dead too long. Then all of a sudden little Diane began to cough and sat down on bed. Her parents couldn t believe what happened to them. Diane told her parents that she had been with Jesus, that His love had gone right to her heart, and that His chair was as big as a house with a river running through it. The parents looked at each other in amazement when she asked them: Why didn t you tell me that I had a little brother. Jesus walked me to him and He said his name was Brian. They had a boy who had died before Diane was born and they had named him Brian. They had never mentioned him to her. The doctors checked her out and found nothing wrong with her. Her parents are no longer atheists and are now preaching God s Word in the US. The little girl has never been the same after her walk with Jesus. A week ago all roads seemed to lead to the cemeteries. We celebrated All Saints day and All Souls day. Our celebration of these occasions is inextricably linked to our Christian belief in life beyond the grave. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in life everlasting. We pray for our dead who constitute the church suffering and for the intercession of those who belong to the church triumphant because of this belief. Death does not spell as end to our existence but ushers in the genesis of a new and everlasting life. As one writer puts it, Death is a new birthday in God. The resurrection of the dead was shown by no less than Christ Himself. He died and on the third day He rose from the dead. St. Paul says that if there is no resurrection from the dead, neither Christ has been resurrected. His resurrection is the very foundation or cornerstone of our Christian faith. St. Paul also says that if Christ had not been resurrected from the dead, everything would be in vain. Yes, if Christ had not been resurrected, our going to mass or all our efforts to be good and kind a person would only be useless as everything would just end up in the grave. Jesus bringing to life a number of persons points to the truth of the resurrection. He who is the resurrection and the life restored to life His friend Lazarus, the widow s son at Naim and Jyruse s daughter whom He describes as just sleeping. Well death is but a little sleep. The question concerning the resurrection of the dead comes to the fore in today s Gospel in which Jesus confirms that there is a resurrection of the dead and that there is life after death. Here the Sadducees who do not believe in the resurrection question the Lord not because they are out to ferret out the truth nor to have a clear understanding of the matter but to embarrass Him. They present to Him a case that will make the idea of the resurrection appear preposterous and untenable. They cite a Law of Moses that states that if a man dies without a son his brother should marry his widow. They present to Him a case in which a woman marries seven brothers one after another. The question they pose in whose wife will she be then in the resurrection. Jesus, turning their insincere query into a powerful teaching, says: The children of this age marry but those who are deemed worthy to attain the coming age into the resurrection of the dead do not marry nor are given in marriage. He adds that they will no longer die for they will be like angels. Jesus in making it clear that in another life there is a different mode of existence and so this runs counter to the popular notion or belief that the after life is but a continuation of life here on earth or that it is no different from life here. Jesus is saying that in the other world there is no more sacrament of marriage for there is no need for us to multiply. Since there is no more death there is no more need for us to replace one another and we no longer need food to survive. The wisdom of God is such that if He plans to do something He provides a system or the means to accomplish it. Because God wants to preserve man he gave him the desire to eat so that by the food that he eats he becomes strong and so prolongs his life. To preserve the human race God gave us an inclination to marry so that by our procreative act we multiply. In the resurrection things are no longer the same. The marriage that will happen in the life after death is not between a man and a woman but between Christ, the bridegroom, and the church, which is the bride and which is us. Just as a man is united to his wife in the sacrament of matrimony we will also be to Christ, experiencing the fullness of happiness. We will be absorbed by that beatific vision. Today there are a lot of modern-day Sadducees people who do not believe that there is still life after death and so just live for today or this life here on earth. They just think of themselves; their enjoyment, their personal interest and gains, etc. unmindful of the future where we will spend life not just for 70 or 80 years but in eternity. Those who think of the future life to come live their life here on earth in hope which manifests itself in a life in holiness, righteousness, love and in conformity with will. It is not a life hewing to the Epicurean philosophy which says: Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die. Sure enough the resurrection is not for all but only for those who are deemed worthy of it. Surely God will not fail to take care of those who live in union with Him in preparation for the next life to come. How worthy are we then of this life to come! Hopefully our prayer will always be like this: Lord, I only pass this world but once and so whatever goodness and kindness I have in me right now, let me show it for I will never pass this way again. Whatever God demands or expects of us however difficult we must try to accept with resignation, love, and joy for all our pains will be rewarded in the end with everlasting happiness which no eyes have seen, no ears have heard, and no minds fathomed.
