Saligan mo lang bala ang ginahambal sa imo? Mayo lang kon ang promesa mahapos batunon kag indi maka-kompormiso sang madamu kag importante nga butang. Apang kung kabuhi ang imo nataya, kon ang imo buas damlag ang posible nga mahalitan, masyado ka budlay ang magsalig lamang sa isa ka promesa. Apang amu ini subong ang ginasaysay sang aton nahauna nga balasahon kag sa Ebanghelyo. Si Abraham ginpromisahan sang Dios nga ang iya kaliwat mangin kaangay kadamo sang mga bituon sa kalangitan. Dayon gin hatagan sia sang isa ka anak. Subong nga gin sugo naman sia nga ihalad ang iya anak kag sakripisy sa Dios ang Dios nga naghatag sa iya sang saad. Kabudlay hangpon, kabudlay saligan. Ang mga apostoles nagbiya sa tanan ang ila salakyan, ang ila nga istable nga trabaho, bisan pa gani ang ila panimalay binayaan nila sa proseso nga amo ini ang Mesias nga magaluwas. Nagpakita man si Moises kag si Elias sa pagpabakod sang promesa, kag mismo nabatian ang tingog sang amay sa pagsalig sa ila. Mabudlay magsalig sa promesa bisan pa sa mga matag-adlaw naton nga pagginawi sa bagay nga ginahanglanon naton ang pagsalig, kinahanglanon ang makita nga mga butang kag pagginawi nga makahatag sang pagsalig. Mabudlay nga saligan lamang naton ang ginapanghambal naton sa kasal: Higugmaon ko ikaw sa tubtob sa katapusan, sa kahamungayaan ukon sa kaimolon, sa kaayuhan ukon sa balatian. Ini nga mga promesa kinahanglan sa pagsalig sa mga gagmay nga mga bagay sa aton pagsinalayo sa adlaw nga tanan. Halimbawa sa pagdumdom sang importante nga petsa sa aton kabuhi ang petsa sang kasal, ang petsa sa kaadlawan. 4 The Real Presence of God Reflections May tatlo anay ka mangingisda nga nagpaindis-indis kon sa diin may mas madamo nga isda. The grace we ask for has to do with our two senses of hearing and seeing. We pray to distinguish between the Word of God and projecting our selfish desires into God s Word. Hearing differs from listening and we pray to allow the Word of God into the center of our lives where we can listen to it and to what that Word calls us. We are invited also to pray for seeing better in Christ s Light so to become familiar with the path that leads to true life. The light for which we pray is not the same as clarity of course. Our readings for this liturgy and the spirituality of Lent call us to a faith and a listening which lead to our trusting God. The First Reading and the Gospel for this Sunday s liturgy present us with two experiences of liturgy, in a way. There is a going up, a preparation or calling together, a central act of faith, a Word of God, a surprising revelation of the real presence of God, and a going onward. We hear first of the terrifying story of Abraham s being tested by God. He is called to take his only son, Isaac, to a distant place and sacrifice him by the knife and then burning him on an altar which Isaac would help build. Abraham takes his son who helps carry the fire and the wood and off they go in a journey of trust. Upon arrival at a divinely-pointed-out hill, the dirty deed is set in motion, no questions asked, except by Isaac who asks about the lamb to be slain. At the point of the knife s being about to enter Isaac who has been bound and placed on the altar, the voice of the Lord s messenger calls for a timeout. Abraham has proven his faith so that he is not only the father of Isaac still, but the Father of Faith and the eternal model for the People of God. A ram is tangled up in a near-by bush and so God has provided the means for the sacrifice rather than Abraham A promise is then made by the Messenger of God that, through Abraham, as he continues living in faith, his descendants who will increase through this same Isaac, will flourish and possess a land of blessing. The Gospel presents us with the Transfiguration. Peter, James and John go up a hill with Jesus. They have a most intimate encounter with Jesus, God the Beyond, and of course, themselves. Jesus dazzles His followers with some state of glorification. Moses and Elijah are seen conversing with Jesus. Moses is the man of the Law and Elijah the man of Prophesy. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the prophets and the voice again ordains Him as My beloved Son. The terrified trio is encouraged also to, Listen to Him. Immediately, there they are, just the four again and nobody else, no other sounds. They leave with this experience and their questions about what all this was about. Ipakita naton ang aton pagtuo! They are charged also not to speak about it until the rising from the dead, and 4 Marso 8-14, 2009they did not understand this either, but they kept on walking back down from this hill of intimacy. Most of us orient our lives, in varying degrees, toward and from the Eucharistic liturgy. We try also to be people who pray, what ever that means. Abraham and Isaac have an extreme close calling with God. Peter, James and John experience an unusual convention and communion. All five go off into the regular, back-down-the-hill living of their lives. Their faith seems to be strengthened, but at the same time their understanding seems to experience befuddlement. They would naturally be asking themselves about the realness of what had just happened. One of the great joys of human intimacy is that it goes beyond reason. I enjoy asking couples whom I have the privilege to be preparing for marriage, Why do you love her/ him? The relationships I trust the most are those who fumble around for words which might express some good reasons. Love is not reasonable. When there are many verbal reasons, I suspect this is a transaction and not a transfiguration. Devotion, prayer, liturgy are such calls to simple and honest closeness, that to try to figure it out and explain it cheapens it and flattens it out into a practice rather than a delight. As with Abraham, Isaac, Peter, James and John, we go toward a time of being met by the Holy, given something of ourselves by the encouragement and comfort of God s presence and then sent away, but always the little question, Was that really real? Was I talking to myself, comforting myself, judging myself? Intimacy does not lead to comprehending, but to the sending, the living, the transfiguring, or changing, because we are so loved. I love the Eucharist for so many reasons, but the very prime reason is that it defies adequate intellectual explanation and I love that freedom from the factual, the scientific, the demand of my arrogant mind. The Eucharist is more than a transfiguration; it is a total trans from a something to a Somebody. The Somebody s changing of the other somebodies who gather around the Holy Place is also unexplainable, but real. The closer we allow Jesus to come toward and within us, the more we, individually and communally, are transfigured and represented to the world. The world cannot adequately explain our living as His New and Real Presence. We will never know if our prayer was real. Abraham is our Father of Faith and our brothers of faith walked down that hill with questions, doubts and wonderings about what in Heaven s Name was all that about? Questions do not dampen faith, cheap answers do. Living the faith is the proof of intimacy, just as living out married love intensifies and proves the leap. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living. I believed, even when I said, I am greatly afflicted. - Psalm, 116

5 Sometimes we see a change in a person s looks or appearance. This happens whenever he puts something on his face or on his ears or whenever he puts on some kind of outfit or clothes. Usually these things are done to make one s self appear beautiful, attractive, or presentable, especially when one is attending a special occasion or joining some contest where looks count. At least an effort is made to put on one s best face. Today s Gospel scene tells of the change in our Lord s appearance. In other words, Jesus is trans figured. This event, which serves as a prelude before things come to a head for Him in Jerusalem, happens on top of a mountain and is again witnessed by His select group of disciples-peter, James, and John. It reveals his suffering to come and the glory that awaits Him in the end in order to strengthen the disciples for the hard times or the ordeal ahead of them. Interestingly enough God chooses a mountain to be the site of an important event or where He will make a revelation. In the book of Exodus God on Mt. Sinai discloses to Moses His plan for Him to liberated the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.. god called the prophet Elijah to go to Mt. Horeb to meet Him. The Beatitudes was delivered by our Lord on a mountain and his crucifixion and death likewise took place on a mountain. In this mountain top event, as we are told, Jesus e s clothes become dazzling white the two pillars are seen conserving with Lord-Moses, who represents the law, and Elijah, who represents the prophets. The law and the prophets make up the Old Testaments and Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Covenant. But what is their conversation all about. There is no mention of it in today s Gospel of Mark. However, Luke tells us that it is about Jesus e s imminent suffering and death in Jerusalem. So it is about the purpose and meaning of his coming into this world which is to fulfill what the law and the prophets all have for told. In the middle of their conversation the voice of the father in heaven is heard saying: This is my own beloved The Transfiguration of Jesus STEVE C. FERNANDEZ, Reflections Son. Listen to Him. At his baptism at the Jordan the same words were heard in heaven just after he had come out of the water. At the wedding of Cana practically the same words were uttered by Mary to the people around when there was no longer wine: Do whatever, He tells you. Yes, we must learn to listen to him. We have to as our Lord is the Word incarnate, the Word made flesh according to St. John the Evangelist and being such is the complete expression of the Father. We ought to in light of the prevailing culture of death and moral decay which permeates our society. A life which is not in accord with His words which mirror the Father s will is without direction and meaning. His words lead us to the road of peace, harmony, goodwill, holiness, and life. The Bible is God s love letter for us His children to read and follow or live. Indeed it takes faith to listen if not to follow Christ. Faith is leads to listening or following. Because of their faith in Christ, the brothers James and John followed Him when He called them to come after him, leaving behind their occupation which could be the source of their security. Abraham was a man of great faith, following what God had asked of Him despite the difficulties involved. He was asked to leave his land and so his old and pagan ways behind for an unknown place. Yes, he heeded His call and this he did out of his unquestioning faithfulness to Him. In another acid test, God asked him to offer his son as a holocaust at Mt. Muriah. Without any second thoughts Abraham did what he had been asked to do. But just as he was about to slaughter his son, God s messenger had come to stop him. Considering what he had done,abraham came to be known as the Father of Faith. Moreover, at the transfiguration scene, Peter is so overwhelmed by the blissful moment he is relishing that he together with the rest wants to stay for good. That is why he proposes setting up three tents-one each for Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. But the Lord turns him down for they have to go down yet to finish their work ahead of them. Theres no turning back on the road to calvary. The Lord brings the three up the mountain to prepare them for his crucifixion, suffering, and death to come. He wants them to have a taste or a glimpse of his glory, Jesus fully knows that the hard and painful moments He will go through will only crush their spirits to smitherines. The disciples as His followers will be experiencing the same fate. The Lord is telling them that this glory is the reward that awaits Him at the end if only hes is faithful to His mission. Yes, there is no shortcutting the struggle for life and suffering must come first and then resurrection, not the other way around, or else it is like putting the horse before the cart. All this meant to give the disciples a shot in the arms-to five them courage and strength when the sailing gets rough for their master and themselves. At least they have some bright moments to look back on to pump them up in the hard times ahead. This mountaintop event is also for us Christians. Trials, hardships, problems, and crosses come our way. They are the means by which we can attain the glory of heaven. A Christian is inseparable from the shadow of the cross. We must be willing to sacrifice or suffer and remain faithful to God because we have something to hope for in the end. When we are in bad and difficult times or making sacrifices doing His will, just remember Christ who suffered and was glorifies. Let us not be Christians by convenience, choosing only what is easy and pleasant and avoing what is difficult and painful. Let us follow Christ and be like Him. Life on earth is just short and so is our suffering but the glory of heaven is without end. According to St. Paul, our suffering is nothing compared to the glory which will be revealed to us in the end. God will give us the grace of strength, that will see us through the difficult and trying moments of our life let alone the crucible of discipleship. Let us just focus our attention on the glory of heaven to come, living our life not for today but for the future. What matters is not today but tomorrow. Our suffering here has an end but the glory of heaven is forever. Marso 8-14,
