Viewed in another way, these animals are much better for they come to sympathize with him whereas this rich man in the midst of his abundance miserably fails to do what he is supposed to do as a human being. He does not feel for this poor man Lazarus. By the way the rich man has no name here whereas the poor man has. Jesus apparently fails to name him. This only tells us that before God the big names here in this world do not matter a whole lot but the poor. THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS STEVE C. FERNANDEZ, REFLECTIONS Walang sino man ang nabubuhay para sa sarili lamang. Walang sino man ang namamatay para sa sarili lamang. Tayong lahat ay may pananagutan sa isa t isa This song which is full of meaning challenges us to care for other people especially those who have less in life. In the time of our Lord Jesus there were many people who were rich and so had power and prestige and among them were the religious leaders like the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Jesus saw that most of them were indifferent to these people, having no compassion and care for them. They even oppressed and exploited them. They did not listen to His words much less believed in them. They did not believe in Him despite the many signs and wonder. He had made like when He brought His friend Lazarus back to life. Their hearts were hardened. In light of this situation prevailing in His time where the rich did not have a heart for the poor Jesus gave a story which is told in today s Gospel. Here there are two men one is rich and the other is poor. The rich man, dressed in fine and elegant clothes, holds a party or feast each day. He drinks and eats sumptuous food. He is having a good time everyday big-time people in Jewish society who come to visit him. Yes, he lives in prosperity and luxury. It is not known whether he was born to the purple but what is crystal-clear is that he is as rich as Croesus. What about the poor man named Lazarus on the other hand? Well he is there outside the rich man s gate lying and yearning to eat the crumbs that fall from his table. Adding insult to injury, dogs who This two men, separated by an economic chasm or divide, eventually die. In the aftermath of their death, however, a dramatic reversal of fortune or situation occurs. The poor man Lazarus is taken up by angels to heaven to be with Abraham whereas the rich man finds himself in the netherworld to be in eternal torment. This only tells us of the survival of the souls after death and the retribution to come. This wealthy man looks up and much to his surprise he sees Lazarus with Abraham. Then he asks him to tell Lazarus to dip his finger in the water and to send him to him that he may touch his tongue to quench his thirst. No puede for there is a big gap separating us, Abraham tells him. The great gap between him and Lazarus continues in the life after. He also asks Abraham to send Lazarus to his family in which he has five brothers to warn them. This means that they are doing the same thing which he was doing while still alive. Abraham replies: No need for they will always have Moses and the prophets to make them listen to them. If they will not, even if one rises from the dead still they will not believe. This means that his brothers have hardened hearts like his own. But why is this rich man up there in hell to suffer eternal damnation? Sure enough he has not done anything intrinsically bad to the poor man, has he? Neither did he scold and insult him nor call his dogs to run him out of his turf. But why the condemnation for this man of affluence? Surely he was condemned for turning a blind eye or his being oblivious to the plight of Lazarus, not giving him anything to appease his hunger, to satiate his thirst, and to cure his sores. He did fail to lift a finger to him from the valley of gloom and neglect to the sunlit path of joyful and hopeful existence. He had resources but he did not help. He could help but he failed to do so. It is not enough for one to be good by refraining from doing something evil but one has to be good doing something beneficial. It is not mentioned whether this rich man was corrupt or dishonest, if he was involved in the broad band deal, the Hello Garci controversy, or in the fertilizer scam. Most probably he is rich because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth or through hard work and perseverance. His greatest sin was that he failed to do what he should have done. He was so focused on his wealth that he became uncaring, selfish, uncharitable, indifferent, insensitive and inhuman. One who is attached too much to his wealth is in no need of conversion for it will mean altering his own lifestyle. The Gospel is not just meant to console the poor, assuring them that their difficulties and suffering here on earth will be rewarded but also to warn the rich who shut their eyes on the misery of other people. This is an indictment to those who rely too much on themselves and their wealth so that they recognize no other God in their lives. If we have no God in our life, we tend to be selfish, concerned only with our own interest and unable to seek out of the window to see who are other people out there. This is so because we ve got everything in our hands. Others are but non-existing or are just decorations in our life. One who is selfish puts his trust in his wealth which is but idolatry according to St. Paul. He says that love of money is the root of all evil. It carries the danger of dislodging God who is the true and everlasting wealth. The challenge is for the rich to have that evangelical poverty which means that they should have that detachment from their wealth. The poor have the power to send them to hell if they fail to help them. Indeed God did not make it difficult for the rich to attain salvation for they have only to share what they have in their hands. The poor are their way to heaven. Salvation is not contingent on the amount of wealth which one accumulates but on how he who has more in life shares with those who have less in life. Of course all of us who have been materially blessed have a moral and social responsibility. To whom much is given much is also expected or required. Through our generous acts we can help to bridge or narrow the gap between the rich and the poor which is not in accord with His will. Yes, we are all our brothers keepers. The rich man was condemned not for his riches which are not intrinsically evil but for the sin of omission which he had committed. 3
