2 Kingdom News July 2018 KINGDOM CHALLENGE by Donny Cortimilia I don t really recall a time in my life when I did not ask God to lead me. Born into a home of love for one another, love for the church and a love for God, I always experienced God in my life. Certainly there were times that I gave into peer pressure and sin, but always aware of my actions and their consequences on my life. God has called me to do some great things. No, I never preached at FBC Dallas, or at a Pastor s Conference somewhere, but wow, has He led me places I never dreamed of. My first lessons in missions came in Sunbeams, Mission Friends and Royal Ambassadors. My first experience came as a youth at Lake Highlands Baptist Church in Dallas. I was a part of teams that poured church foundations at Ruidoso, TX and at El Indio, TX. I had great teachers at camps at Mt. Lebanon and Glorieta. As a ten year old I gave my life to be a missionary though looking back had no idea what that meant, but it was a genuine call from God. Do you remember talking about what you wanted to be when you grew up? Astronaut, baseball player, Governor, President, millionaire, doctor, quarterback for the Cowboys? Missionary never made the list. So in my teenage years my call became buried, and buried deep. After all, when you are starting to date, who wants to date someone who is going to be a missionary? At nineteen, I felt God calling me again, but this time I thought it was to pastoring. That was bizarre in itself because I was very shy and the thought of public speaking kept me home from school several times when oral book reports were due. I don t even think my mom thought it was a good idea. However, I went off to Baylor with the idea of learning to preach and become a successful preacher. The next year following graduation from BU, I went to work for a construction company, married my lovely wife, moved to Ft. Worth and began working on my Master s degree at Southwestern Seminary. When Tammy and I married I was all in on pastoring, but all out on being a missionary. She, however, was all in on being a missionary. God has a great sense of humor. We were so poor we could not afford to take the newspaper, but quarterly we received our free magazine, The Commission, published by the then Foreign Mission Board of the SBC. Also, for my first semester at SWBTS, Tammy had to register me because of my work schedule. My first class was Missiology with Dr. Cal Guy and Dr. Jerry Key. She said that it was a required class anyway... right. After working construction and an all-night grocery store, FBC, Princeton, TX called me as Minister of Youth. It was a great six years in Princeton (I ate great catfish every Friday night that I could.). God used that time to steer me once again toward missions. I felt called to go overseas. We contacted the International Mission Board and began the arduous paperwork (before the days of ). One of the last things we had to do was to write a ten page spiritual autobiography. I wrote that paper and there was no mention anywhere of the call as a ten year old to missions. I had indeed buried it deep. The day after we mailed in those papers, we received a call from FBC, Melissa, TX asking if we would be interested in pastoring there. Tammy and I were confused because His call to missions seemed so real and immediate. However we went to talk with them. After our first meeting we both knew that God was calling us to pastor that church. Melissa at the time was a town with a population of 650. But God did not let us turn from our call to missions. We still felt called so we talked again with Jim Riddell, our consultant at the IMB. We had to do some updates in reading material, and on our spiritual autobiography. Finally, in rewriting that paper, God reminded me of that call, now twenty-three years later, that I had as a ten year old camper at Junior Camp. On August 3, 1990 we were appointed as IMB missionaries to Senegal, West Africa. We worked in Kaolack, Senegal and in Dakar, Senegal for eighteen years. We came to be the Network Coordinator of the Basin Baptist Network in December of The ten plus years here have flown by. I have thoroughly enjoyed this ministry and I think the only thing that could make me leave is a return to my passion missions in Africa. I will begin a new assignment from God with an organization called, The Seed Company. I will be working in Bible translations projects for the 1 BILLION people in the world who don t have a Bible translation, written or oral, in their language. We will live in the Metroplex and I will make trips into Africa. It is a big task. I don t know all of how it works, but I am confident that this is His work for us now. Thank you for making my time in the Permian Basin a positive and growing one! I love our pastors, staff members and lay people. I have truly met some great folks out here. Blessings. Kingdom News July 2018 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. Ecclesiastes. 3:1 NASB I have been very blessed to have been able to direct Baptist Student Ministry for the past nine years. I have been challenged and encouraged by most of the students with whom I have worked, and I know that there are many young men and women who love the Lord in our midst. I also know that there are many who do not, many who are unsure of what they believe, and many who are headed in completely the wrong directions. Please let the Lord show you how you can be involved in reaching the college-aged adults in our local schools and churches. Or maybe you need to be the voice in your church to help provide ministry for this age group. Most churches do a poor job of ministering to this age group, and many students (70%) who grow up in the church leave it prior to or shortly after high school graduation. Even those who remain faithful throughout college need to continue to be discipled and need to have opportunities to hang out with students their own age. If many of our smaller churches find that difficult, BSM can make the difference and provide discipleship, fellowship, service opportunities, leadership development, mission opportunities and training for campus outreach. However, it needs the support of the local church and the association. Please also lead your church to encourage students to check-out BSM on their future or current campuses. Please encourage them to provide financial support as well. Most any church could bring or sponsor a lunch at one of the local campuses. Certainly every church could make praying for the campuses, BSM and the college students a regular part of their prayer times. BSM is meant to provide for Baptists and other students as they enter college to keep pointing them to the Lord. The club members can reach out to non-believers on the campuses, and it becomes a mission field. It is not sponsored by any one church, and it will not build up any one church, but it will build up strong believers who will in turn belong to our local churches now and in the future and be a part of building them up. Ultimately, BSM and its students will partner with all believers in building up the Kingdom of God. As many of you know, I am married to the Network Coordinator for Basin Baptist Network. However, he is leaving his position of Network Coordinator. It follows that I too must resign from this precious ministry. So with mixed emotions of excitement, fear and sadness, and with faith in God, I am leaving this position as BSM Director. God will provide, and the ministry should continue, but it will continue to rely on you, the local churches, and the local church members for prayer and support. May God continue to bless the churches of the Permian Basin and Baptist Student Ministry at UTPB, MC and OC. Tammy Cortimilia Midland Baptist CRISIS Center Where need and opportunity meet. Hello everyone. School is out, summer is officially here, and before you know it, school will be back in session again. Summer is typically the time of year when things around the Midland Baptist Crisis Center begin to get very busy. School is out, which means families have to feed their children more often. Warm weather means they will be coming in for shorts and t-shirts. Warm weather also means people use their air conditioners more, their electric bills are more expensive, and they come to us for help. We are so thankful for the churches of the Basin Baptist Network whose support allow us to be there to meet the needs of those who come to us for help. We do our absolute best to serve them with the kindness and compassion of Jesus, and work hard to help them experience His grace. We are in need of volunteers in our food pantry every day except Tuesday. Men and women are both encouraged to come and serve. You have the opportunity to be a missionary just a few miles from your home. Please call or come by if you d like to learn more about volunteering. For His glory, Russell Cowan, MBCC Director
