2 Mission Minded Notes from the Director of Missions Steve Holcombe at The Gas Pump Squeeze! A few years ago I was able to fulfill a lifelong dream. I ran across an old rusted gas pump on ebay that was up for auction. It was located in Sulphur Springs, Texas so pick-up and transport were do-able. It seemed all the planets had perfectly aligned themselves. I ended up winning the 1951 Martin and Schwartz calculator pump. I spent at least six months restoring the old pump grinding, painting, replacing old parts, and such. The original plan was to put the pump out in the back yard. However, when I finally finished the pump I decided there was no way I was going to put my baby out there in the weather. Sooooo since my dear wife would not allow me to put in our living room the only alternative was the garage. Now I know what you are thinking So what is so bad about that? Well it did not end there. In my Canton-going, Estate-sale-hunting, Garage-sale-shopping escapades I have accumulated another baby (1953 Wayne calculating pump also restored), two 1950 s metal Tom s Peanuts cabinets, a 1940 s Tokheim oil lubester, an Interstate Battery wire shelf, and of course my two table saws. Now we used to have a big garage. But those days have long gone! Our two cars will barely fit into our garage and if I gain too much weight I cannot extricate myself through my car door when I park. Now I must say this. These things are not bad in and of themselves. But they have slowly squeezed out the purpose of our garage to store the two cars. And I must say that the same thing happens to all of us in our lives as well. All of us at some time in our lives allow many good things to smother out the best things. We allow our time to be spent on so many good things that we have no time for our Lord and His work. It is not that we are involved in some terrible sin. We just have allowed good things to squeeze out the Lord in our lives. Do you have the Gas Pump Squeeze in your life or can you squeeze some time this summer for the Lord and His church? The funds are to be used to facilitate direct mission projects originated by and carried out through local CBBA churches. With summer around the corner and many church groups contemplating summer mission trips, don t forget the resource of the Acts 1:8 Fund. Twenty-two students were impacted this semester, serving as teachers in the English Class Ministry at the Aggie BSM. Those who teach English learn volumes themselves about God and His love for all people. Brynne, who taught one of our six weekly classes, shares some of her thoughts. Seeing God s love extend into every culture and every type of person on our campus through the English class ministry has been the most humbling and eye-opening experience of my entire freshman year. My tidy little definition of Christianity has been completely shattered by the global scale of Christ s love for us as a result of teaching this class. Christianity can so easily be put into a little middle-class, Southern, Caucasian box. However, to see so many people from across the world in love with Jesus, falling in love with Jesus, or just hearing the name of Jesus for the first time has made every English class completely worth the effort and time. There is a warmth and genuine desire for relationships at the BSM that extends beyond a weekly one-hour English class. I love how we are encouraged as teachers to intentionally pursue friendships with these students and to make them a part of our lives as we become a part of theirs. The BSM creates a supportive and encouraging environment for students to hear the gospel and grow in their faith. I love international students and know that Texas A&M offers multiple capacities for me to become involved with them. Yet something about the family-like atmosphere the BSM fosters has blessed my life and encouraged me to go deeper with the students I meet there, beyond just vocabulary and grammar. Brynne Matson, Class of 2013 is from Colleyville, TX and is studying Bilingual Education. Brynne will serve on leadership at the BSM next year as the English Class Ministry Coordinator.
