2 Curate's Message November 15, 2015 How can we help to reinforce the fact that our children are made in God's image? As the church's calendar year draws to an end, it is not surprising that the texts for today are all associated with the eternal hope of life after death. As Christians, we can all anticipate this, because Jesus sacrificially gave of Himself on the cross, so that we can have life and have it to the fullest. It is this life that we are all encouraged to ensure that our children experience here on earth, via us having healthy relationships/interactions with them. If this happens, then we may be able to help them effectively challenge the negative influences that they sometimes receive from their peers or other persons, who may want to manipulate or deceive them in getting involved in practices that are not of God. We are therefore advised to heed the Word of God which comes to us from the gospel lesson for today, if we are truly serious about helping our children to understand what it means to maintain their identity as Christians, as people who stand up for what is right. It is in this light that Jesus in Mark 13:14-23, informed His disciples, that they will be challenged by the authorities, and will be persecuted for His sake, but in spite of this, they should never succumb to the pressures, and go against the will/intentions of God. Also, Jesus warned the disciples to not believe anyone who would come and seek to do signs and miracles and say they are the Christ. In essence therefore, Jesus was basically saying that they should not be easily swayed by the influence of their peers and the prevailing culture. Such a lesson is a vital one for our children, and so caregivers should seek to develop relationships of trust with them, so that they do not need to go outside of the home in order to find love. Such relationships according to Eric Erickson are possible because of the dependability of children on caregivers to provide love, food, nurture, warmth, and safety. What happens in the home is therefore very important, and so if we really want to help our children to become assertive individuals who are confident in who they are, as persons made in God's image, then the home must be that place where true love can be found or realized, and a place where the child have a sense of belonging and feel valued. As Christians, therefore, let us seek to be consistent in training up our children in the way they should grow. Their spiritual and physical well being should be of great importance to us, and so we must seek always to protect them from any threat to their wellbeing. Let us teach and help our youth to be resolute in their belief, so that they can seek always to do what is right and pleasing to God, in spite of what others may say or think about them.
