2 Just A Thought by Rev. Mark Fenstermacher It was one of the strangest moments in my time as an undergraduate at IU. I stopped by a professor s office to pick up a paper he had graded. When I entered his office he looked up and said, This is good stuff: where did you get it? I was stunned and puzzled. I didn t immediately understand that he was accusing me of plagiarism. I wrote it, I stammered. He dismissively marked a C at the top of the front page, and told me to leave his office. For some reason I never complained about the unfairness of his action. The wrongness of his accusation. Here was the thing: he smoked a pipe and the tobacco had a particular aroma to it. It seemed that everywhere I went in Bloomington I would smell that pipe tobacco. I tried my best to avoid the instructor but there he would be, around the corner at Jewel or Osco or the Mall. When I would notice the smell of the tobacco I would turn and head the other way. I just didn t want to come face to face with him again! Not that I hated him or wished him harm but because it all was so uncomfortable. The Gospel of Mark, in many translations, ends with a long description of multiple appearances of the risen Christ to his friends and followers. Many Bible scholars say, though, the original text ends with verse 8: Overcome with terror and dread, they fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. (CEB) THE AROMA I COULDN T ESCAPE The Gospel of Mark was written during a time of extreme persecution. He gives us an account of the life and teachings of Jesus that is short and to the point. One instructor told me it almost feels like the words were written down hurriedly, by candlelight under the cover of darkness, behind closed doors, with the author always ready to flee. It is a gospel for people who live on the run. Will Willimon talks about the resurrection as this event that shocked people. People who had counted on Jesus being dead and gone, kept silent by the tomb, were suddenly surprised to find him loose in the world. What Easter means is that Jesus is loose in the world. Grace is loose in the world. So the risen Christ will find us wherever we are. He ll be on the other side of the aisle in the grocery store, in the silent hours of the night, in the middle of a concert, in a conversation with a friend, in the building of a Habitat House. Wherever we go, wherever life takes us, we will find ourselves catching the scent of grace, of new life, of second chances, of a truth that burns away the junk in our lives and sets us free. The aroma of that pipe tobacco was everywhere and so is the Galilean. In Christ and for Christ, Mark At the old rugged cross we see humanity at its worst, but God at God s best. 6 OUTREACH April Outreach Spotlight: Habitat for Humanity What it is: The Monroe County Habitat for Humanity affiliate builds houses in partnership with people in need, and then sells the houses to the homeowner partners. Homeowners are selected by affiliates based on their need for housing, ability to repay a no-profit mortgage, and willingness to partner with Habitat. Mortgage payments contribute to a Fund for Humanity, which in turn provides the money to build more houses. Because of Habitat's no-profit loans and because the houses are principally built with volunteer labor, mortgage payments are affordable for low-income partners. Go online for more information at Make checks payable to FUMC, with "Habitat for Humanity" on the memo line. What it means: The Mosier family of five - Ryan and Amanda plus Aiden (5), Jade (3) and baby Mila (1) - were living in a cramped two bedroom trailer situated in a neighborhood where they weren't comfortable letting their kids go out to play. The utility expenses were too high to make the gas stove affordable, so Amanda had to get creative with her use of circuit breakers and kitchen appliances. After applying for several bank loans and being turned down, the Mosiers were encouraged by family and friends to look into Habitat. The day that the Mosiers were accepted into the program was Aiden's fifth birthday. They went to visit the lot where their home would be built. "Aiden ran in circles around the cul-de-sac," Amanda said. "He'll have a place to play and ride his bike and meet other kids." May Outreach Spotlight: Martha's House What it is: Martha s House is a local 28-bed facility that provides not only emergency shelter but also educational and social services for homeless adults. It now meets and exceeds HUD benchmarks for helping its 300 annual guests find stable housing and/or better employment. Martha s house has collaborated with other agencies to open a family shelter. Martha s House serves both the chronically homeless (through its Bridges program) and the situationally homeless. Make checks payable to FUMC, with "Martha s House" on the memo line. What it means: A former guest of Martha s House recently said that "I do not know if I would be alive, let alone sober, if Martha's House was not in existence. When I first became homeless, winter was not far away. I would have either been on the streets or around other using, drinking people. I cannot stress enough the important role it had in my recovery. And not only mine - for people who work for recovery and truly want independence, it is exactly the type of help that is necessary." fumcb@fumcb.org

Contact Darren with their information ( or dwright@fumcb.org). JUBILEE INTERN PROSPECTUS Laura Strawmyer As a Jubilee intern, I handle some of the more businesslike aspects of the ministry: donor communications, setting up service opportunities, social media etc., and we are definitely seeing positive results in these areas! What may be less obvious to non-jubileers is the impact being made in community growth and my personal growth spiritually and vocationally. Kaylee Dolen (the other intern) and I work to invest in Jubilee every day by pouring our time and energy into relationships among members as we strive to live out our calling to be an authentic and inclusive community. We also find ourselves being encouraged to ask tough questions and to seek to understand where God wants us in the world. Working for Jubilee allows me to play a direct role in developing my favorite group of people, and it also gives me an improved sense of purpose and direction. As a Nonprofit Management major, I am developing critical skills and learning how I fit best into the body of Christ. Kaylee and I are excited to continue our work this year as we are challenged and developed as students, workers, and Christ-followers fumcb@fumcb.org

After the stone has been rolled away and the world discovers the empty tomb, what does that mean for our lives, our world, our families, our work, and our relationships? Join us on April 7 as we begin a 6-week series titled EASTER PEOPLE. Each message will be grounded in the amazing book that is Acts. These messages will help if your life - at home, at work or in the church - is in transition. On the 7 th we ll look at God s call that we not blend in but stand out. Acts 5:27-32 is the text and the title is Easter People: Power Forward. The weekend of the 14 th the theme is life changes and sudden turns. Our text will be Acts 9:1-6 and the message is Easter People: Make Sudden Turns. The 21 st we ll look at how we respond to those who have given up. The title is Easter People: Raise the Dead and the text is Acts 9: One of the most explosive and divisive issues in the early Jesus community is dealt with in Acts 11: Our title that weekend, as we look how inclusive or exclusive we ll be, is Easter People: Say It s Okay if God Says It s Okay. The 5th of May the message is Easter People: Set Sail as we look at how God calls us out of our comfortable places. Acts 16:5-15 is the text. Easter People: Live in an Earthquake Zone, May 12 th, is a reminder from Acts 16:16-34 that God is always at work to set people free. What does it look like to live in a world where walls shake and chains fall off? Invite a friend to join you (and us!) for this series of messages designed for people in the middle of change! April/May

14 CARING MINISTRY BEREAVEMENT MEALS The chairs for the April bereavement meals are Carol Orr and Carolyn Sweet. The chairs for the May bereavement meals are Maggie Brown and Marcia Miller. Serving bereavement meals is a facet of the Caring Ministries. When there is a death in our parish, a meal will be offered to be served either in a home or at the G athering Place at church. DivorceCare Thursdays at 7 pm -- Through May 9 DivorceCare is a weekly support group for men and women who are experiencing (or have experienced) separation and divorce. It is a place to be around people who understand what you are feeling and where you can hear helpful insights on the healing process. They explore issues around loss, anger, loneliness, finances, children, forgiveness, new relationships, other challenges, and God's unshakable love and His plans for your future. Each session is "self-contained." You are welcome to take part in all sessions or only what your schedule allows. For more information, DivorceCare@fumcb.org or call the church at (812) THE ART AND JOY OF THE AMERICAN CAROUSEL Program Presented by the Rev. David Babb Sunday, May Great Hall -- 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. If you have been fascinated by the authentic carousels at the Indianapolis Children s Museum and the Indianapolis Zoo, you are sure to be fascinated by The Art and Joy of the American Carousel program presented by the Rev. David Babb in the Great Hall Sunday, May 19. A retired United Methodist pastor of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference, Rev. Babb is a master woodcarver and story teller with more than 60 years of woodcarving experience. He began carving when he was 12; and the carving evolved into a ministry 25 years ago when he began teaching about his woodcarving art, sharing his knowledge with others. Rev. Babb s carvings include more than 5000 pieces, with 1500 set aside for his programs. According to Rev. Babb, our Creator created us, His creatures, to be creative. He describes his programs as illustrated with (his) original wood sculptures, blending stories, anecdotes, fact and fiction, demonstrations, inspiration, and a dash of education. The programs are considered to be of interest to both men and women, boys and girls of all ages. Sponsored by United Methodist Women, the program on May 19 will include a buffet lunch. The cost of the lunch and program is $15 for adults, $5 for children 12-3, and no charge for children 2 and under. All net proceeds will go to missions fumcb@fumcb.org
