CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH APRIL 2017 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: From the Pastor Cover News & Events 2-5 Women s Ministry News 6 Mission of the Month 7 Men s Ministry 7 Youth & Family News 8 Congregation News 9 Calendar 10 Serving at Worship 11 From the Pastor s Pastor Ken Nelson, Senior Pastor Calvary Lutheran Church Office PastorKen@calvarylc.com Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Luke 24:5-6 God desires our good for each one of us. In our mid-week worship services during this past Lent, we have emphasized that the desire for good for us pervades the foundational teachings of our Christian faith. For example, in the Apostle s Creed alone, Luther said that God, our creator, provides us food and clothing, home and family, daily work and all we need from day to day All this God has done out of divine goodness and mercy Luther went on to say. In confessing Jesus our forgiver and Lord, Luther wrote at great cost (he) has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person...all this he has done that I may live under him in his kingdom and serve him in everlasting righteousness innocence and blessedness. The good that God desires for every one of us is the joy of being freely, voluntarily united to him in love, a love compared with which the most genuine expression of our own human love would be like comparing the finest of wine to a glass of water. Of course this means, to enjoy this love of God, God, as I said, made us free, to enjoy him or to deny him. That is how Luther could say of God all this he has done out of divine goodness and love. Of course God knew what would happen if we used our freedom to deny instead of receive his love. Apparently God

OUR MISSION & VISION: The vision of Calvary Lutheran Church is: Sharing the life-changing message of Jesus Christ Mission Statement: Calvary Lutheran Church is a family of Christians, directed by the Holy Spirit, growing as disciples of Jesus through worship, Biblical study and prayer that are shared with the community and world. Pastor Ken s Message - continued from the front page. felt that was worth the risk. Easter reminds us that God was most willing to take that risk, to whatever degree it would cost him, to love us even if we would not love him in return. And then come to us again and again, even from the grave, to show us that love will never cease. A god is that to which we look for all good and in which we find refuge in every time of need Luther wrote. This is most certainly true, and this is most certainly what Easter means for you. Live freely and fully in that goodness each of you, and with all your heart love and serve him. Alleluia! Pastor Ken Nelson Calvary New Member Classes Know of someone looking for a church home? 3 Installation of Pastor Ken Nelson March 4 & 5, 2017 We are so blessed! Congregation News and Events Council Pres. Jim Kalupa, Pastor Ken, Call Committee Chair Andy Schatz Pastor Ken Nelson and Pastor Craig Nehring, Dean of the Wisconsin/Upper Peninsula Mission District of the NALC Celebration Brunch The Evangelism Committee at Calvary is a very active group whose mission is to glorify God by proclaiming the Gospel to all people as commanded in Matthew 28: and by moving God s people from membership to discipleship. The team of Bob Branston, Jane Krause, Keith Pierce, Tom Thiede, Mark Trudell, and Janet Zastrow always welcome new member to their committee! Maybe full membership doesn t fit your schedule well, then, consider being part of Visitors Into Members (VIM) where you have the opportunity to meet guests attending worship and follow up with them after. Or, maybe you would like to share the ministry of Calvary via distribution of Ministry Cards to friends and neighbors; or learn how to be more evangelical by attending Just Walk Across the Room workshops. So many people would like to share Christ with others but don t know how to go about it. The main goal of our committee is to build the evangelism skills of our church members so that Calvary becomes a bright beacon for Christ in the community, says Tom Thiede. Contact any committee member to learn more. April Page 3

Congregation News and Events You are invited to a make and take sign party on Sunday, May 7 at 1:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Cari Wandrey from Life Expressions Décor is going to teach us how to make a professional looking sign. She brings everything we need for our crafty get-together and makes it easy and fun. At the party, you will choose your phrases from a large selection, paint a wood board and apply the saying. The boards turn out great and look store bought. It is super easy no special skills required. It is family friendly so bring your child, yourself, grab a friend and let s have some fun. The per person cost is $20 for one sign (4 x 24 ), $38 for two signs or $56 for three signs. Sign up is on the glass doors in the Narthex. Find Help Discover Hope Experience Healing Divorced? Separated? We can help! The next session meets Thursdays from 6:30-8:15 p.m. starting April 20 and continues though July 20 at Calvary Lutheran Church. For more information askdrjenni@gmail.com A Unique Opportunity for Women at Calvary It s not often that we have a chance to spend a few hours in God s Word with a nationally known Christian author and leader in women s ministry. This spring, Calvary women and their friends can view a simulcast of Priscilla Shirer. Priscilla is the author and leader of both women s Bible studies held at Calvary this year, The Armor of God and Breathe. Even if you weren t able to take time for these studies, we hope you ll be able to take advantage of one of the options for this event. We know her message will deepen your relationship with God and will bless each of us. The live Tulsa, OK event will be held Saturday, April 8, but we have chosen to postpone watching it so that more women can participate. The two options offered are: Option 1: Monday evenings April 17, April 24, and May 1 7:00 8:30 pm We ll meet in Fellowship Hall for light snacks and a bit of worship and praise and then move into the sanctuary to watch a teaching segment from the Tulsa event each evening. There are three segments, so we ll see one part each evening. Option 2: Saturday, May 6 9:30 am 2:30 pm (including a light lunch) We ll meet in Fellowship Hall at 9:30 for light snacks and worship and praise time, move to the sanctuary to watch one teaching segment, take a short break, watch another segment, enjoy a light lunch, watch the final teaching segment and wind up our day by 2:30. The cost for either option is $20/person. Checks should be made payable to Calvary Lutheran Church with the words Priscilla Shirer in the memo line. Please sign up on the Narthex window and turn in your check to the office by April 15 for the evening sessions or by May 3 for the Saturday event. Bring a friend! If you have questions, please contact Grace Gunnlaugsson (gracemg@mac.com or ). Page 4 - Calvary Crossroads

Calvary ROCKS with Kindness through Cookies for Luther Manor Last year we set our April goal for 200 dozen cookies for Luther Manor's Health Care residents. Did we do 200 dozen? NOOOO our wonderful congregation loved on those residents with 252 DOZEN cookies! And listen to this from Lori of Luther Manor: "Hey, I am the cookie counter and want you to know, Calvary was our TOP cookie congregation in 2016!" WHY should we be SO EXCITED to provide cookies to Luther Manor Health Care residents? I love to think of our own Ruth Yankus - she turned 99 on March 26th. She is living for the Lord, and notes she's not done yet! Ruth is as active as anyone can be, always taking advantage of the many activities Luther Manor offers! Ruth loves to receive the daily coffee, cookie and kindness from volunteers like our own Sue Rowe. Calvary is a long time supporter of Luther Manor and Luther Manor is still very LUTHERAN, technically they are supported by ELCA congregations. THAT IS WHY I LOVE FOR CALVARY TO ROCK! Calvary is the only NALC congregation and we are showing our LU- THERAN LOVE through this cookie program...and we, the only NALC congregation, were the TOP donator last year. I don't want to lose our title...do you? Did you know each weekday Luther Manor volunteers deliver cookies, coffee and tea to 200+ residents of the Health Care Center? The volunteers visit each resident and offer these treats, while individually greeting each person. Please consider donating homemade or packaged, store bought cookies. Softer cookies, without nuts or seeds comply with the dietary needs of many residents. No time for baking? Those soft wafer bars that typically come in vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate, are a HUGE winner for melting in the mouth. And inexpensive at Aldi or even the Dollar Store. Any day in April, drop off your cookies in the Calvary kitchen, labels will be available. Please label with the following info: - Approximate number of cookies or number of dozens - Cookie type and whether nuts or seeds are present, or if gluten free or sugar free - Your name and the date Contact Linda Berger with any questions at (262) or Linda.Berger411@gmail.com To the Congregation of Calvary Lutheran, Thank you so much for the amazingly fun celebration in January as I concluded my time as your Interim Pastor. The cake was yummy and the fellowship was, as always, a blessing. Thank you also for your very generous gift! We have yet to determine what to purchase. Isaiah has informed me that we have a few Bibles in the house already so I ll have to come up with other ideas. It was truly a blessing serving as your Interim and I continue to be blessed as I serve with Calvary s Youth. I know God has amazing things planned for Calvary!! Be ready! Pastor Dawn Jane and Hugh Taufner would like to thank everyone for the caring and prayers that were said for their grandson, Carl. He was very ill in January and thankfully has recovered and was able to return to second grade with his brothers and friends after a difficult time." April Page 5

Women s Ministry News Women s Ministry Book Group April 10, 2017 The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain is our selection for April. From Goodreads: Heroic bookseller Laurent Letellier comes across an abandoned handbag on a Parisian street. There's nothing in the bag to indicate who it belongs to, although there's all sorts of other things in it. Laurent feels a strong impulse to find the owner and tries to puzzle together who she might be from the contents of the bag. Especially a red notebook with her jottings, which really makes him want to meet her. Without even a name to go on, and only a few of her possessions to help him, how is he to find one woman in a city of millions? We hope you can join us for conversation and fellowship on Monday, April 10 at 1:00 pm in the Media Room. Monday Morning Movie - April 17 at 9 a.m. Are you ready for a good old-fashioned romantic musical comedy? Then join us as we watch High Society on April 17 at 9 a.m. in the Media Room 110. Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Celeste Holm, Louis Armstrong quite the cast! With music by Cole Porter! Here s a synopsis of this film adaptation of High Society Tracy Lord is a spoiled heiress who is about to marry George Kittredge. Her exhusband C.K. "Dex" Dexter-Haven, to whom she was married for a relatively short time, is a musician who lives next door. Tracy is meticulous about everything that she does and having her ex-husband around isn't part of her plan. Dex however would like her back. Things get complicated when Spy magazine assigns one of its reporters, Mike Connors, to cover the wedding. Soon, he too finds himself falling in love with Tracy. With three men now wanting her, Tracy finds herself having to decide what she really wants in life. Even if we have an April shower on the 17 th, this movie will make you smile! Attention Quilters & Knitters Calvary members and friends are welcome! Quilters meet on the first & third Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You do not need to know how to sew to be a quilter! Knitters meet on the second Thursday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The pocket prayer shawls were appreciated by many thank you. In fact, so many that there is a need to replenish the supply. Page 6 - Calvary Crossroads

Mission & Outreach Mission of the Month for April Compassion International Compassion International exists as an advocate for children, to release them from their spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults. This is done in a variety of ways. For the Calvary Congregation, we are most familiar with their Water of Life and Child Sponsorship programs. This month the focus is on the Child Sponsorship program. Compassion supported children spend an average of 4,000 hours in safe, nurturing programs and are: Likely to stay in school years longer 27-40% more likely to finish secondary education 50-80% more likely to graduate college 14-18% more likely to have salaried employment in their adult years 30-75% more likely to become leaders in their communities 35% more likely to find white-collar employment as adults 40-70% more likely to grow into church leaders Your tax-deductible contribution of just $38 a month connects a child living in poverty with a loving, churchbased Child Sponsorship Program. Your support provides: medical checkups, which often save lives; nutritious food; health and hygiene training; educational assistance; access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief; and mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God s children. When you sponsor a child, you'll receive your child's photo, personal story and a child sponsorship packet by mail in approximately 10 days. When children find out they've been sponsored, the joy they feel is indescribable. Just knowing that someone across the globe cares means more than you can imagine. Sponsoring a child in need will profoundly change the future for your child, and will change your own life as well. Child sponsorships are paid directly to Compassion. For general support to Compassion, use your weekly offering envelopes, white envelopes in the pew back or give online. Checks should be made out to Calvary Lutheran Church and note: April Mission of the Month. Condiments are the next Food Sunday with collection on April Recommended items are ketchup, yellow mustard, mayo, Miracle Whip, salad dressings, barbeque sauce, salsa, and hot sauce. Other items of need at the Waukesha Food Pantry are rice, peanut butter, canned meats, soup, fruits or vegetables, and cereals.
