4 A Word From Pastor Judy Praying doesn t change God. Praying changes me. C.S. Lewis How often we hear or we say, I ll pray for you or Pray for me. In our culture praying has come to mean requesting something from God. We pray asking for someone to be healed, pray for more money in order to pay the bills, pray for successful examination results, pray for many things but often the prayers seem not to be answered because we didn t get the results we wanted. We conclude that God does not answer prayers therefore there s not much use in praying. Let s start again. In Luke chapter 11, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus replied, When you pray, say Father, hallowed be your name. In that sentence, there is no request to God. There is just a simple reverence God your name is holy. And that is the basis of prayer spending time with God, just being with God with no expectations. For a couple of months before coming to St. Paul, I worked at a Lutheran retirement complex and ministered often to residents having Alzheimer s disease or dementia. As I reflect back over those months, I realize it was the residents who ministered to me. The Alzheimer and dementia residents didn t know me. To them I had no past and no future. My accomplishments or lack thereof, meant nothing to them. They didn t know any of my failings or where I had fallen short. The only thing that mattered to them was that I was in front of them. I was present with them. They loved me because I was there. They loved me, not because of what I could give them or what they could give me. They loved me just for being a human being wanting to spend time with them. There was no conversation. All I could do was to sit with them, spend time with them just be present to them. Faith Trek Leaders Meet on tember 1st with Deaconess Marla and tember 8th with Pastor Judy s Wednesday evening Small group 7:00 pm All are invited Dinner at 6:30 pm (Submitted by Deaconess Marla)
5 Tuesday Women s Book Study Group I realized over time spending time with those residents was like spending time with God. God doesn t care about all the accomplishments of which we may be so proud. God doesn t care that we failed. To God, the past is forgotten. What is important is to spend time just sitting with and being present with God. Over time, we come to learn who God is. With time, we become changed. Just as our friends can have influence over us, so too spending time with God can change our hearts. Before Jesus called Peter to minister to his sheep, he asked Peter three times, Peter, do you love me?. The most important factor was not that Peter was educated enough, or had enough experience to do the job. The most important criteria for Jesus was Peter, do you love me? What would you answer if Jesus looked into your eyes and asked you, Do you love me? begins again on tember 14th 9:30 am - all are welcome Spend time with God each day. Pray, not because your prayer changes God but because prayer (spending time with God) changes you. Leading Lessons: Insights on Leadership from Women of the Bible by Jeanne Porter (Submitted by Deaconess Marla)
6 Are you called to Adult Choir Ministry? For 34 years now, I have been an accompanist for, director of, and member of church choirs. Through church choirs, God has spoken to me. It starts with encountering a piece of music for the first time you hear scripture set to music and notice what words and themes of God are emphasized. It continues with the realization that you are setting aside time in your life each week on Wednesdays to prepare yourself for worship and to prepare for ministering to others in worship. You feel the Holy Spirit at work as we so often do when a group of people are gathered and engaged in a Christ-centered task. Hearing the word of God on Sunday after having rehearsed and sung the same words offers that special connection to the word that always happens when we read a Sunday scripture before hearing it in worship. All throughout worship, the Holy Spirit can be felt again every time you join your brothers and sisters in the choir and congregation in raising our voices in song. Finally, the melodies that stick with you have the word of God lyrics replaying in your mind far after a Sunday service or choir season ends. Would you like to be part of this ministry experience? I would like you to join us. On Wednesday night, tember 1st, rehearsals resume for our Adult Choir ministry. We sing at the 8:30am worship on the first Sunday of every month and the 11am worship all other Sundays. We rehearse 5 anthems and service music every Wednesday night. We will sing a Palm Sunday Cantata this year. If you cannot commit to an entire year, join us for a season tember through Christ the King; Advent through Transfiguration; Lent to Easter (and/or Cantata choir); and/or Easter to Pentecost. Come make this ministry part of your relationship with Jesus Christ! Submitted by Chris Ilg SHARING CENTER - AUGUST UPDATE Important MANDATORY SHARING CENTER MEETING ALL Friday evening volunteers please attend a training meeting on Sunday, August 29th at 9:00 am. 8 Minutes of the SPLC council July 12, 2010 Present: Chapman, Frase, Gasser, Hanft, Heini, Jackson, Jarolim, Owens, Schondel, Sickels, Deaconess Marla, Pastor Judy Absent: Mall, Sprang Guest: Chris Ilg Meeting was called to Devotions were led by Rich Owens.(Next: Chris Heini) We heard a presentation by Chris about the sound equipment. The lightening strike disabled one half of the sound board, the 2 main speakers at the front of the church, and a floor choir microphone. These damages were reported to the insurance company, and we have received money for repairs and replacements. Chris has been in contact with a company named Sound Com. He has experience with them through Highland High and Northside Christian Church. Approval has been previously given to move forward with repairs. In addition, a dedicated laptop for the projector screen, and the sound board will be updated. Chris has approached the Bernie Simmons Fund members to request money to cover these expenses at a cost of $ Council voted to approve this expenditure. There was discussion about adding a digital recorder for the purpose of recording sermons to be broadcast to shut-ins. This was tabled for further consideration by Pastor Judy. Minutes of the June meeting were approved with the amendment regarding building committee discussions with the architect. Currently everything discussed is just a recommendation. Ministry Reports: Dudley and Deaconess Marla updated council on the status of the new web design. A new plan is in the works that can use the new skin, and it will allow different pages to be farmed-out to individuals. We also discussed the new St Paul logo. The Designated Giving campaign currently has $23, in pledges. The committee needs to get back together and come up with parameters to distribute the funds. Sharing Center the chest freezer and another upright freezer are not working. Approval was given to get new freezers from the contributions given to the Sharing Center this year.
