2 WELCA Women s Women s retreat Annual Spring Gathering il 17, 2010 Seeds of Kindness Theme revolves around us being kinder and more caring people as Christians. Hosted by: St. Stephen Lutheran Church 3725 Kent Road Stow, OH Visit for more details or call (See flier on the bulletin board by the nursery) Youth grades 7-12 and parents are invited to the 2010 Alive Fest held this year at Atwood Lake. The Arbuckle family have offered their Atwood house as the homebase for overnight stay and meals. You can come for one day, one evening, or a couple days over the four day period. Sign-ups are available on the table outside of the sanctuary. You can buy tickets on and learn more about the bands and events. If you register by il 19th, the cost for a one day ticket is $32, and the cost of the total event is $107. We will coordinate meals together at the Arbuckles. Overnight space is limited, and is on a first come, first serve basis. 2 15

Threatened by a messenger of God's expansive, steadfast love, yet another human mob succumbed to death's seduction. They chose its brutal, silencing power and trusted its empty finality. Death's murderous rebellion against the Creator of life seemed unstoppable. Until that Sunday morning dawned. Mary, Joanna, Mary and the other women arrived at Jesus' tomb prepared for a body emptied of life. Instead they discovered the grave emptied of its power and death itself buried in resurrection life. Jesus Christ, the first fruits from the dead, lives (1 Corinthians 15:20)! Now Jesus Christ, the embodiment of God's compassionate love, is preparing your body for a resurrection life. In that life death can no longer imprison you in a grave nor hold you captive to its violent imagination and destructive power. Joined to Christ by baptism, your body is being brought into his resurrected life, into Christ's new creation, and into the ministry of reconciliation and peace. In this new day your resurrected service of God's steadfast love endures forever. "This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. 4 COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 8, 2010 Minutes of the SPLC Council March 8, 2010 Meeting was called to order at 7:04pm Devotions were led by John Hanft (next month is Angela Gasser) Present: Frase, Gasser, Hanft, Heini, Jackson, Jarolim, Mall, Owens, Schondel, Sickels, Sprang, Pastor Chris, and Deaconess Marla Absent: Chapman Guest: John Leach Minutes were read and approved BS/JJ John Leach, representing the Property Committee, presented the results of the fellowship hall survey. An overwhelming majority of the congregation feels that the facility is inadequate. A motion was made and seconded (GJ/JJ) by council to approve the recommendation of the property committee to hire mbi/k2m architecture at the cost of $ They will proceed with drawing up plans for renovating the space, and evaluating the HVAC in the building. Funding for this part of the project will come from the Bernie Simmons fund. Pastor s report: In February, pastor made 7 visits to members, and 4 included Holy Communion. The Lenten services are going well, with pastor presenting a series of monologues from New Testament personalities. Deaconess report: The 30 hour famine went well, with over 20 youth involved. Donations exceeded expectations for this event. A mission trip is planned for July. Work has begun on the plans for the spring designated giving campaign. Mark Jackson and Ernie Funfgeld are working on a cross for the front of the sanctuary. It will be in the shape of the Jerusalem Cross, and will hang above the projector screen. Plans are in the works for the Easter Vigil reception. Old Business: Plans for the Transitional House. The family is set to move out March 30 th. A new family has been selected, but there was discussion as to whether the space should be made available to the new pastor as a temporary residence, in view of the current housing market. After much discussion, a motion was made to continue to use the Transitional House as an outreach ministry, as it has been in the past. (DS/JH) There was one in opposition to this motion. The church-wide retreat will be held il th at the Airport Holiday Inn, and River s Edge Retreat Center, the same as last year. We will be discussing Spiritual Gifts. The designated giving campaign this year will focus on building a fund to assist members in leadership development. It will help to fund scholarships in the ministry area and also camperships. The committee has just been formed, so more information will be available at the next council meeting. Quilting Group Needs Your Help Weekday Opportunity to Share Christ s Love When: Wed. at 9:30am on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th weeks What: Women working together to make World Relief Quilts Why: They are sent to a family in the world who needs a sign of hope and the warmth that a handsewn blanket provides. Many are refugees who have left every thing to escape from dangerous situations. Sewing skills? None are needed. Just a willingness to spend a few hours tying and assembling quilts. 4 13

7 SHARING CENTER - APRIL UPDATE Thanks be to God for the wonderful support the Sharing Center has received from area churches. In March, youth groups at both Sharon Methodist Church and Granger United Methodist Church collected and delivered food to the Sharing Center. In addition, Mt. Zwingli UCC delivered a generous donation of food as well. Collaboration with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in this ministry enables the Sharing Center to continue its mission. Praise God! The Highland Schools continue their support of the Sharing Center. Highland Middle School is running a food drive the last week of March. Thanks to Craig Bailey and Jim Florian for their leadership and effort in this ministry. FOOD DONATION GUIDELINES: Our affiliation with the Akron-Canton Foodbank binds the Sharing Center to abide by food safety regulations. Mindful of this, we ask that only sealed, unopened food be donated to the Sharing Center. Bulk items which have been opened may be accepted only if the donated items are in smaller, sealed (by the manufacturer) quantities. Leftover items from large gatherings and parties must be in the original, sealed container (eg. sealed juice, unopened bags of snacks). While we understand and appreciate the need to not waste good food, we have an obligation to our clients to do everything in our control to ensure the quality and safety of the food they receive. APRIL NEEDS: spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, jelly, canned beef stew, juice, brown paper grocery bags NOT NEEDED AT THIS TIME: tomato soup, macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles, green beans, corn (any questions/comments, contact Karen Edwards) Hour Famine Results Hunger and preventable diseases claim the lives of 25,000 of the world s children every day. Right now, more than 1 billion people worldwide don t have enough to eat. Annually, more than 9 million children under the age of 5 die from disease and malnutrition as a result of hunger. In March, 18 St. Paul youth and 3 adults joined the efforts of hundreds of thousands of young people all over the US through World Vision, and went without food for 30 hours to learn about hunger and extreme poverty, its causes and solutions, and to raise money for the people of Haiti. They collected a total of $2558, which feeds approximately 7 children in the next year. Praise God and thank you for your prayers, giving, and support! 7
