1 August 2018 The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit Vicar Tami Reichley: New Addition to Our Church Staff At the July meeting of the Congregation Council, our congregation was approached by the United Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia and the Northeastern PA Synod to serve as a residency internship site for Tami Reichley. Tami is a third year student at the seminary who needs four academic courses and an internship to complete her journey toward ordained ministry. At the meeting, the Council voted to have Tami serve a sixteen month part-time residency internship while she completes her remaining coursework. Her title during the residency will be Vicar Tami. Vicar Tami is a lifelong Lutheran who lives in Lehigh County and has been a member at St. Paul s Lutheran Church and St James Lutheran Church in Quakertown. Vicar Tami is often referred to as a second career student at the seminary; meaning that she began her professional career as an attorney who practiced law for 25 years. After graduating from the University of Delaware and Widener Law School, she served 8 years as a Deputy District Attorney in Lehigh County and then spent 16 years in her own private law practice. Vicar Tami is a single mother raising two children- a 17 year old son, Logan and a 15 year old daughter, Lauren. As a family they enjoy beach vacations at the Jersey shore and Cayman islands. Tami enjoys the outdoors and being physically active; she is a certified scuba diver as well as a lifelong Phillies/Eagles/Sixers fan. Vicar Tami will begin her ministry with us the week of August 20th. Please pray for her as she begins this final phase of her seminary journey as well as her service here at Holy Spirit. Welcome! 4 Page 4 June 2018 Financial Results and Discussion Operating Performance: We continue to be in good shape with our finances YTD. We have a surplus of $17,996 while we had budgeted a surplus of $8,581 for June YTD. This is mostly due to pledges having been paid in advance. August 2018 In June we finished the month off with a deficit of $5,677 but had budgeted a surplus of $1,317. Pledged revenue was down significantly this month coming in at $48,924 while we had budgeted $61,207. Unpledged revenue came in a little over plan at $4,777 while we had budgeted $4,642. We saw $5,201 in savings in expenses during June. We saw savings in every mission area, mostly in Resources for Ministry. Thrivent totals came in at $0 this month while we had budgeted $88. YTD we have $6,061 and had budgeted $4,063. Operating Cash Reserve: As a result of our June deficit, we ended the month with an available cash balance for operations of $128,241. Capital Campaign Cash: Our capital campaign balance decreased during June to $32,329 mostly due to 3 expenses. The first was a check for invoice 3 of the feasibility study ($1,750). The second was for the first interest payment for the Mission Investment Fund HVAC loan ($482). The last bill was for the final installment of the total engineering support for the Nave/Narthex HVAC ($1,640). HVAC System: To date we ve borrowed $130,630 from the Mission Investment Fund for our HVAC system. Building Fund: Our building fund increased to $7,181 due to generous donations totaling $1,483. There were no expenses in June. Dear Church Family It s so exciting to be part of our congregation. Have you been part of our enriching and vibrant worship? Have you noticed how busy our youth and adult leaders have been in planning for and attending the ELCA national youth gathering in Houston? Did you see the many children and volunteers for our Vacation Bible School? Project Help, our annual summer mission trip to Starks, Maine, will be heading out soon. Sometimes we forget to make our financial gift to the church when we are gone for summer activities. We invite you to make your gift to our congregation s ministries even in the midst of summer fun. There are many easy ways to do this. Send your gift to the church office. Bring your gift to worship or drop off at the church office. Go online to holyspirit-emmaus.org and make your online gift. Call the church office at to ask about enrolling in Simply Giving systematic automated electronic giving from any bank account. Stop by our giving kiosk in our narthex to make a gift with a debit or credit card. Instructions for use are at the kiosk. Have a wonderful summer, and thank you for your generous support of our ministries.
5 August 2018 Page 5 Thank You Letter from Pr. Jim and Mary Bowers First of all, I want to thank Pattie Bisbing and her whole committee for all the work that went into planning for my farewell luncheon on June 24th. I am sorry that Pattie was not able to attend due to her hospitalization, but her committee did a wonderful job in her absence! Thanks to John Mosovsky and Rob Smith for their leadership as hosts, as well as Sue Smith, Bill and Fran Derhammer, Rick and Tim Croy, and Alice Mudge for their work in making sure all went according to plan. I also want to thank everyone for the cards, notes, gifts, and words of appreciation shared at the luncheon and in the weeks following. Also, thanks for the wonderful monetary gifts from the congregation and the church council! Mary and I are already planning our next bucket-list trip! I also want to say thanks for the guided flyfishing trip for two with a local outfitter and can t wait until I can use that one! A special thanks to you the members of Holy Spirit, for your support and encouragement of my ministry over the years, and especially as I got ready to end my career of active ministry status as an ordained pastor. I ve always felt your appreciation and gratitude for my work at LCHS, and will cherish those times of pastoral care, worship, and preaching where I had the chance to offer support, and guidance, and solace, and spiritual nourishment for your journeys of faith and life. I can t think of a better place to end my years of active ministry than the years I spent as Associate Pastor at Holy Spirit, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as one of your pastors! Also, I want to say again my thanks to Pr. Ric and all the staff at Holy Spirit for the wonderful years we shared together. It has truly been a pleasure serving with all of you. Keep that light and love of Christ burning brightly on Cedar Crest Blvd. in Emmaus, as I am sure you will! Thank you all for the wonderful luncheon as a way to celebrate our time of ministry together, and for a wonderful opportunity to say thank you and farewell. I will always cherish the memories we ve shaped together in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord. Peace be with you all! Travel Tip from Consumers Report On Health Call to Live Well ~Yours in Christ, Pr. Jim and Mary Bowers When arriving at your hotel/ship and before unpacking, check the mattress and box-spring seams for small black or rusty red spots, which can signal blood excreted by bed bugs, says Michael Potter, Ph.D, a professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky. Look for the small, oval-shaped brown or tannish bugs, too. If you see anything, move to another part of the hotel/ship if possible. Keep bags on a luggage rack or hard surface, zipped shut, and clothes and personal items off beds and upholstered furniture, away from walls. When you return home, tumble clothing in a hot dryer for minutes. Store luggage in the garage, basement, or attic. A Note of Thanks! Thank you to our summer worship musicians for providing wonderful music during the busy summer season. A big thank you to Cindy Ernst and Sue Smith for providing the music for worship while Sharon MacCabe was away!
6 Page 6 August 2018 Splash Canyon Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School always proves to be a fun-filled week. VBS 2018 was no exception! Our theme was Splash Canyon: God s Promise on Life s Wild Ride! Vacation Bible School began on July 9th with 70 children eager to strap on their life jackets and learn about God s faithfulness. Life is full of thrills and spills; we may not know what s around the bend, but God does! Each day, we took a look into the Bible, God s Holy Word, and explored one of five Bible accounts where God was faithful. Each morning, Pastor Spencer shared a Take-Home Point. This point was repeated with the children often so they would remember God s promises! The children rotated to various stations throughout the morning. The stations included storytelling, crafts, music, games and snacks. On Thursday evening, we welcomed the children and their families to our VBS Closing Program. VBS songs were shared along with highlights of our week together. Fellowship and refreshments concluded the evening. Vacation Bible School would not have been possible without the 74 volunteers who helped at various times and in different ways throughout the week. Our mission project this year was to provide school supplies for children at McKinley Elementary School in Allentown. 2,234 items were collected throughout the week. We are anxious to deliver the pencils, crayons, scissors, notebooks, folders, glue sticks, erasers and highlighters to McKinley so the children can start the year with the items they need. We are already looking ahead to VBS Stay posted for dates and details. Vacation Bible School Thanks You Thank you to the staff, congregation, volunteers, decorators and donors for your support of Vacation Bible School. VBS was a huge success because of our dedicated volunteers along with generous donations from the congregation for decorations, snack, and craft items. Everything helped to provide a fun and welcoming environment for the children and their families. Nursery School News Holy Spirit Christian Nursery School is excited to welcome Jennifer Powell as a teacher in our preschool program. Jenn is a former preschool parent and board member and is a member of The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit. Jenn has served as a VBS volunteer, CAT Club teacher and Sunday School teacher. Jenn is also a certified children s and adult yoga teacher. We are thrilled to have her joining our excellent staff. Limited preschool openings remain for the school year. It is a fun way for LCHS children to safely enjoy this time of year without feeling scared. As the Fall Event is for our community, it is also a great opportunity to introduce families to our church. In addition to our Trunk-or-Treat event, pumpkin decorating, face painting and other fun activities will be offered. We ll have food and beverages, including hot dogs, s mores and apple cider. Like last year, we hope to make the Fall Event intergenerational with our families, parents and grandparents, youth, Mission Teams and our entire church family decorating trunks and joining in on the fun. There will be guidelines for decorating car trunks, more information and sign-ups. Please stay tuned through the summer and early fall. There are many ways to help prepare for this outreach event. 9 August 2018 Page 9 Labyrinth Locator: Our Summer Experience One suggested summer activity for members of Holy Spirit is to locate a labyrinth, walk it, experience your personal labyrinth journey, and then share your story by ing Fran Derhammer at fdehammer@gmail.com. So, I thought I would start us off with our first Labyrinth story. Bill and I decided to look for a labyrinth when we visited our kids/grandkids this summer. First stop - Ambler, PA. We used the World Wide Labyrinth Locator, entered the location zip code and found a labyrinth so close we could walk to it! I ventured out with the car first to see if it would be worth the walk with our grandson, Hank. Located in a very peaceful setting in the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University, the labyrinth is a public, permanent, outdoor, rock and garden space, with a central design, open year-round from dawn to dusk. It was a beautiful, sunny day and no-one else was there so I took my time to walk the labyrinth, offer prayers and thanksgiving, relax and renew my spirit. I talked to a gardener nearby about the labyrinth and he explained that it was part of the Ernesta Ballard Healing Garden, completed in 2009, honoring her as a pioneering woman of horticulture. The Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women began in 1911 as one of the first non -traditional career training programs available to women. The School became part of Temple University in 1958 and in 2000 the campus was officially designated as an arboretum. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission awarded the campus a state historical marker for its contribution to women s history in Today it is a historic garden with a focus on sustainability, the health benefits of gardens and the history of women in horticulture, agriculture and design. Who knew! The next day Bill and I took Hank by stroller to the labyrinth. It was worth the experience and Hank liked sitting in the center, kicking his new sneakers in the finely ground stones, while we said a prayer of thanksgiving for the joy our grandson brings to us! ~Fran and Bill Derhammer What about your summer labyrinth experience? Send it to me at fderhammer@gmail.com. Labyrinth Locator Summer Packets are located around the church for you to pick up and use.
