1 ST. JOSEPH S MESSENGER SEPTEMBER 2010 St. Jo seph Churc h Rev. Christo pher Hartsho rn 1026 North 8th Avenue, Winterset, Iowa Office Parish Hall Rectory See further parish contact info on page 2 PONDERINGS BY FR. CH RIS Dear St. Joseph Parishioners: chartshorn@saintjosephchurch.net September always seems like a month of renewal to me. The lazy days of summer are behind us as we begin a new school year with all of its hope and promise. September also brings with it a renewed energy for the projects we have set aside during the summer months. Hence I always think of the call of stewardship with renewed focus during this time of the year. Stewardship is an invitation to help change the world. Bold claim? Not if we take the call stewardship to heart and live it in our daily lives. Stewardship is a call to each one of us to renew the face of the Earth. This is a call to listen to the voice of the Spirit speaking of gratitude and responsibility. Mass Times Saturday... 5:00 PM Sunday... 9:00 AM Monday...None Tuesday... 6:00 PM Wednesday... 8:00 AM Thursday... 8:00 AM Friday... 8:00 AM Reconciliation Saturday... 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM or by appointment What Is Catholic Stewardship? Stewardship is not simply making donations or taking care of the building and grounds, but that is part of it. It is a spirituality a way of life made of four parts: (1) Receiving the gifts of God with gratitude, (2) Cultivating them responsibly, (3) Sharing them lovingly in justice with others, and (4) Standing before the Lord in a spirit of accountability. It is up to each one of us to determine how we will live out this stewardship way of life. The Gifts of God Think of God's gifts in broader terms, not simply the material goods or security you may enjoy. These are gifts, too: faith, hope, love, joy, your family love and relationships with others, your intelligence, talents, skills, your imagination, your compassion for others, and the whole of God s creation in all its splendor. Our Catholic tradition teaches us that with so many blessings come great challenges. At all times in our lives, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to share what we have been given. Jesus Is the Steward It begins with remembering our Baptism, when we became followers of Jesus Christ. From this call flows the commitment to Christ that makes stewardship possible and deeply rewarding. However, this is a commitment to a lifetime of action, and it requires sacrifice. Through following Christ, we have the benefit of the role model of sacrifice for the greater good, a model of self-giving and loving service. 2 Page 2 ST. JOSEPH S MESSENG ER Hearing and Responding to the Call Everyone has a calling, which is another way of saying that your walk with God is personal. When you hear the call to gratitude and responsibility in your friendships and family, in your work, wherever you go then taking the next step to answer that call is where Catholic stewardship may be clearly seen. What Does a Catholic Steward Look Like? Catholic stewards take care of the world around us, including embracing the social teaching of the Church. We work as partners with God in the redemption of the world. We respect human life and dignity. We protect the natural environment. We share our gifts (time, talents, and treasures) with others. For our own development as a Catholic steward, it helps to spend time in prayer and reflection to recognize your gifts from God. Then discover how best to use those gifts for the benefit of others and of course, invite others to discern and share their gifts, too. The Challenges and Rewards of Stewardship It is an incredible challenge to live in imitation of the life of Christ. We all face the obstacles, opportunities, and challenges, of living in a fast-paced environment with many responsibilities. Our spiritual hunger does not always get a chance to be nourished through prayer and action. However, a clear sense of purpose nourished by the Eucharist and our rich Catholic tradition opens the door for us to actively commit to a life of gratitude and responsibility; to thank God for his endless gifts, and then to decide what we can do to help the world. The rewards include: Making a difference in people's lives, becoming a more active member of the Catholic community, discovering talents inside you, waiting to be used, letting go of your worries and setting realistic goals in both your spiritual and secular life and experiencing the amazing increase in God's presence that comes with a partnership with the Lord. Reflection Questions 1. What resources, talents, and abilities has God given me? Do I use them in service to others? How might I take the next step to become a more effective steward? 2. What qualities in the life of Jesus provide a model for living and an example of good stewardship? How might they compare to my own life and lived experience? 3. If I am to work to be an effective Christian steward, with the help of God's grace, what will it cost me in terms of personal sacrifice and hardship? Am I willing to take the next step? 4. How am I reaching out to invite others to recognize their gifts? What opportunities do I provide for them to employ those gifts for the good of the community? Blessings, Fr. Do you like to have fun with a great group of people? Consider joining the adult choir! Practices are Wednesday nights from 6:30-8 p.m., and we sing at the 9 a.m. Sunday mass. If you prefer to attend Saturday 5 p.m. mass, we'd love to have you participate then as well! Talented piano players and instrumentalists are also welcome. Questions, call Teresa Kordick at , or just join us at practice! CROP WALK CROP Hunger Walks help children and families worldwide -- and right here in the U.S. -- to have food for today, while building for a better tomorrow. Come join the Madison County walk in Winterset on September 26th at 3 pm. 25% percent of the money raised at this walk goes to the Winterset Food Pantry. For further information visit and click on CROP Hunger Walk. REFLECTION QUESTIONS September 5, Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Wisdom 9:13-18b, Philemon 9-10, 12-17, Luke 14:25-33) What are your responsibilities in life? How do you choose to carry them out? Do you choose Jesus each day in your life? Why or why not? How does your choice of following Jesus make life better for others in your family and among your friends? September 12, Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14, 1 Timothy 1:12-17, Luke 15:1-32, or Luke 15:1-10) The monk, Thomas Merton, was once asked, "How can we be most like God?" He answered, "Be merciful. Just go around forgiving everybody everything all the time. That's what God does." Can you recall what Jesus said about being merciful? How can you make mercy a part of your life? September 19, Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Amos 8:4-7, 1 Timothy 2:1-8, Luke 16:1-13 or Luke 16: 10-13) What do you do with the money you earn or are given? Do you save some of it? Do you put some into the collection basket at church? How do you share your money with those who have less? How do you use your money to care for yourself? How do you use your money to care for others? September 26, Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Amos 6:1a, 4-7, 1 Timothy 6:11-16, Luke 16:19-31) Do we, like the rich man, sometimes forget God's word about sharing what we have with the poor? Do we sometimes ignore or see right through the hungry or homeless person in our own community? How will you show that you have heard Jesus' warning about ignoring Lazarus?

4 Page 4 NEW PICTORIAL CHURCH DIRECTORY MORE ST. JOSEPH NEWS Thank you to all who had their pictures taken in August! We are excited to create a new pictorial directory of our church family. The directory will help us connect names with faces. It will be an ideal outreach tool and will capture the history of our church congregation. Please participate! All we ask is that you have your picture taken by the professional photographer and meet with the Portrait Consultant at the church. Every participating family/household that selects a pose for the directory will receive a free directory and a complimentary 8X10 Custom Natural Portrait. You will come to the church only once for photography and for portrait viewing. The program is available at no cost to the church budget. You will have an opportunity to order additional portraits during your scheduled appointment time. Olan Mills is now taking more modern poses and offers more options to help you to make the most of this opportunity. The scheduled dates for Photography and Portrait Viewing: Thursday & Friday, October 14 & 15, 2:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. Saturday, October 16 9:30 a.m. to 5:10 p.m. *October sessions will be scheduled in September before & after masses If you have questions, please contact Sharon Johnson, Jo Snyder, Jean or John Pletchette. We look forward to seeing everyone in the directory! WALLHANGING RAFFLE - AND THE WINNER IS... The winner of the wall hanging was Richard Williams. Congratulations, Richard!! She came here from California to live with her son and family near Holliwell Bridge. Her husband served in the military and was deceased several years ago. They had lived in Des Moines for thirteen years some time back. Jesusa is happy to be a member of St. Joseph Church because she likes the way Fr. Chris conducts Mass, especially his explanations of the readings. She also enjoys the good, religious feeling of the parish community. At home, she enjoys gardening and other home-making activities. She would like to be involved with church activities and helping where she can. Charlie and Jolene DeCarlo We extend a big St. Joseph welcome to Charlie and Jolene DeCarlo who live at Truro. Charlie works for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier and Jolene is the Branch Manager of Union State Bank at Truro. They have lived on an acreage near Truro since They came from Des Moines to enjoy country living in Madison County. Charlie and Jolene enjoy gardening, jogging, and anything that s outside. They also enjoy traveling and going antiquing. They have found the people at St. Joseph s Church to be friendly and they like Father Chris. Charlie s brother, John, known as Tank DeCarlo, is a priest in the Des Moines Diocese. They had been attending St. Mary s Church in Churchville until they chose St. Joseph in Winterset. Our parish family has certainly been enriched with their presence. You will usually see them at the Saturday night mass.
