CHRIS Dear St. Joseph Parishioners: LENT 2011 chartshorn@saintjosephchurch.net Deacon or stmnsully@l2speed.net Lent begins on with Ash Wednesday on March 9 th. The key to understanding the meaning of Lent is simple: Baptism. Preparation for Baptism and the renewing of our baptismal commitment lies at the heart of the season. Why is Baptism so important in our Lenten understanding? Lent is a 40-day season that developed in the fourth century. It was first the ancient paschal fast that began as a two-day observance before Easter but was gradually lengthened to 40 days. Lent was also a process or period of preparation for Baptism for the catechumenate which included an intense period of preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) to be celebrated at Easter. Lent also developed into the Order of Penitents, which was modeled on the catechumenate that sought a second conversion for those who had fallen back into serious sin after Baptism. Lent, then, is radically baptismal. There are three pillars or customs of Lent that can help us renew our baptismal commitment and they are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Prayer: More time given to prayer during Lent will draw us closer to the Lord. We might pray especially for the grace to live out our baptismal promises more fully. We might pray for the elect who will be baptized at Easter and support their conversion journey by our prayer. We might pray for all those who will celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation with us during Lent that they will be truly renewed in their baptismal commitment. Fasting: Fasting is one of the most ancient practices linked to Lent. In fact, the paschal fast predates Lent as we know it. The early Church fasted intensely for two days before the celebration of the Easter Vigil. This fast was later extended and became a 40-day period of fasting leading up to Easter. Vatican II called us to renew the observance of the ancient paschal fast: "...let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind" (Liturgy, # 110). Fasting is more than a means of developing self-control. It is often an aid to prayer, as the pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God. Fasting also joins our concerns to those who are forced to fast by their Mass Times Saturday... 5:00 PM Sunday... 10:00 AM Monday...None Tuesday... 6:00 PM Wednesday... 8:00 AM Thursday... 8:00 AM Friday... 8:00 AM Reconciliation Saturday... 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM or by appointment Inside this issue: Parish Contacts 2 Reflection Questions 2 St. Joseph News 3 CGS Corner 5 Milestones 8 Around the Diocese 9 Tidbits 10

2 Page 2 ST. JOSEPH S MESSENG ER poverty, those who suffer from the injustices of our economic and political structures, those who are in need for any reason. Thus fasting, too, is linked to living out our baptismal promises. Almsgiving: Works of charity or almsgiving, the third traditional pillar of Lent, is also linked to our baptismal commitment. It is a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for everything that God has given to us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were baptized. May God bless us all in a renewal of our baptismal life and commitment this Lenten season! Peace, Fr. Chris REFLECTION QUESTIONS March 6, Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Deuteronomy 11:18, 26-28, 32, Romans 3:21-25, 28, Matthew 7:21-27) What is the significance of faith in my relationship with God? How does a person acquire faith? How do we nurture it? How do we lose it? What can we do to grow and increase our faith? What role do good works play in our life of faith? March 13, First Sunday of Lent (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7, Romans 5:12-19 or 5:12, 17-19, Matthew 4:1-11) What spiritual practices will you put into practice during Lent? Prayer, fasting and works of charity are traditional Lenten practices. Today's passage from the gospel might suggest that we spend a few minutes each day in reading Scripture. Or are you trying to live on bread alone? March 20, Second Sunday of Lent (Genesis 12:1-4a, 2 Timothy 1:8b-10, Matthew 17:1-9) How are you like Peter in this gospel? Seeing Jesus transfigured was so wonderful, he wanted to stay there always. We also see him, if we have eyes to see him, as we walk down the mountain and back to everyday life. Jesus still leads us. How can you keep your eyes on Jesus in works of justice and mercy, in help for those less fortunate? Who or what can help you seek Jesus here? March 27, Third Sunday of Lent (Exodus 17:3-7, Romans 5:1-2, 5-8, John 4:5-42 or 5-15, 19-26, 39, 40-42) So many people are searching for and "thirsting for" the right answers to life's questions. Will you share with them the "living water" of truth that you have received from Jesus? How will you share this living water? 4 Page 4 MORE ST. JOSEPH NEWS PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES On February 3rd the pastoral council met for their regular meeting. Father Chris, Jill Buckalew, Jim Murphy, Kathleen Kordick, Jim Heithoff, Terry Cowman and Julie Wheeler were present. The meeting started as usual with scripture readings and then a discussion about those readings, and how it impacts our lives. The first topic on the agenda was the upcoming invitations to new council members. It was decided that the Discernment Night for the people nominated to serve on the council, would be at the next meeting on Thursday, March 3rd at 7:00 pm. A brief summary of the purpose of the council, what the discernment process is, and a personal experience of what it means to be on the council will be shared. Invitees will be asked to do some reflecting by filling out a brief form and turning it in at a later date. New members will then be invited to serve. The council continues to look into the formation of a stewardship plan for the church. Jim Murphy continues to investigate what is out there now, to look to for a future model. He will share with the group what he finds at the next meeting. The subject of Lent was discussed. A discussion was held about how to involve young children more in the Stations of the Cross. Father is looking into literature that could be used by families with young children to help share this experience. The meeting closed with prayer. Sincerely submitted by Julie Wheeler 4TH ANNUAL QUILT RAF FLE COMING SOON This year our very own Denise Conoan has generously donated a beautiful quilt called Twisted Star for our 4 th annual quilt raffle. Denise pieced it and then had Michelle Pettorini of Urbandale machine quilt it. Raffle tickets will be handed out shortly and the drawing for this quilt will be on Sunday, May 1, the date of our Easter brunch. The envelope with ticket money can simply be placed in the collection basket. Last year because of your generosity and support for the quilt raffle we were able to raise over $ Lets see if we can meet and perhaps even exceed that amount this year. ST. JOSEPH FAMILY GR OWS The BARKER Family moved to Winterset from South Carolina, and for Gary it was coming back home. He is a medical doctor in South Carolina and is back to Winterset for long or short weekends as often as possible. Pat is a nurse and met Gary while working in that capacity. They like St. Joseph s church because of the friendly atmosphere. Pat says it is the friendliest one they ve ever been in and Gary says it is just the BEST. Various hobbies and interests of the family are reading, sports, watching TV, and playing Scrabble or Bridge. They also enjoy camping together. You will usually see them at the Sunday morning Mass. Kevin & Kathy JOHNSON moved to Winterset from Hastings, Nebraska. Kathy is new school nurse at Winterset High School. Their son Christopher is attending the University of Nebraska and their daughter, Amanda, is a senior at WHS. Kevin is the sales manager for Farmers Mutual Insurance in Des Moines. 6 Page 6 MORE ST. JOSEPH NEWS TRIVIA NIGHT A HIT! Approximately 90 adults participated in the inaugural St. Joseph Trivia Contest held February 12th. We were fortunate to have Ron and Deb Kordick, trivia contest veterans from St. Louis, moderating the event. Tables of eight people competed against other tables in a display of spectacular knowledge guessing! There were ten rounds of ten questions in each round and three optional bonus questions. Players were able to purchase mulligans for some of their answers. The evening also included a $1 heads/tail game and a $1 dead or alive game, as well as a 50/50 raffle, attendance drawings, and raffle drawings for prizes. At the end of the evening, the winning team from the Lutheran church was awarded trophies and their table s $120 registration fee. Winning a tie-breaker to come in second place was the No it ALLS consisting of Pam Palmer, Joan Loftus, Karen Pommier, Jim and Kris Jacobsen, Anthony Hill, and Jim and Mary Murphy. (It must have been the special eyeglasses that gave them the edge!) Thanks to the No it ALLS for donating their second-place $60 prize money back to the church! Tables of eight competed against other tables of eight. The No it ALLS What did we learn from the evening? Larry Corkrean is still alive; everyone can contribute to the answers; Fr. Chris and Adolph Hitler s fathers did NOT share the same surname; Tom Leners is really a Kordick; it s dangerous to have a spice category when there s a DCI agent in attendance; people want to try gooseberry pie; the great fish that moved silently through the water is Jaws, not Moby Dick; the third baseman on Abbott and Costello s classic Who s on First skit is... sorry you have to ask someone who was there!

7 Page 7 V OLU ME MA1, R CISS H UE Thanks to all for participating and for having a great time raising over $2,000 for our church. A special thanks to those who helped with funds/prizes/supplies: Ron and Deb Kordick, Breeding s Hardware, Mary Kordick, Gary and Carol Kiernan, Berta Kordick, Kathleen Kordick, Larry Lantz, Gerene Farrell, Vickie Williams, Deb and Chip Darling, and Karen Kordick, and all those who stayed and helped with clean-up. I m looking forward to seeing you all at the next trivia night, hopefully later in the year. Thanks again for helping make our first trivia contest a success!
