1 St. Joseph s Messenger St. Joseph Church Rev. Daniel Kirby Deacon Sam Sullivan 1026 North 8th Avenue, Winterset, Iowa Office: Parish Hall Father: dkirby@saintjosephchurch.net Deacon: or stmnsully@l2speed.net November church happenings The month of November in the church is a time when we remember our brothers and sisters, who have gone before us. We believe with great passion that death does not unravel our relationship with our loved ones, but that we are bound to them through our belief in the Communion of the Saints. This bedrock teaching reminds us that our friendship with are departed brothers is very much real and connected. We believe that we can pray for them and that they can pray for us. This Communion of the Saints becomes very real to us during the mass. During mass we pray in solidarity not only with our siblings that we can touch, but we believe that our heavenly family is singing and praying right along with us as well. This holy reality has always given me a tremendous amount of peace and consolation during mass. Just think, our parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and dear friends are really present with us at every mass. What a blessing! On Nov. 1 we celebrate the feast day of All Saints. We celebrate the feast of our canonized brothers and sisters of every time and place. We look up to them and ask for their intercession. We are edified by their words and actions and try to mirror their values in our life. Our holy brothers and sisters tell us, If we can do it, you can do it. Our masses for the Holy Day are as follows: Oct. 31, 6:30 p.m. at St. Patrick s Irish Settlement, Nov. 1 at 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph. All you Holy men and women pray for us. Throughout the month of November we will have the Book of Remembrance placed in the church for you to write the names of your loved ones who have gone before us. As we celebrate mass throughout the month of November we will remember them in our prayers. We will also continue the custom of having special remembrance candles lit throughout the month of those who passed away this past year. Eternal rest grant unto them o Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. I want to remind everyone about our parish auction Nov. 2. What a great time to come together to have some fun and help the parish retire the debt. 3 Page 3 USCCB responds to inaccurate statement of fact on HHS mandate made during vice presidential debate The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following press release calling attention to the inaccuracy of the statement made by Vice President Biden in the Vice Presidential debate regarding the resolution of the problem of religious freedom involved with the HHS mandate. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following statement Oct. 12. Full text follows: Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees: With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact. This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain religious employers. That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital, or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served. HHS has proposed an additional accommodation for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as non-exempt. That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation to pay for contraception and to be a vehicle to get contraception. They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are Around the Diocese Andrew Dinners promote vocations November 2012 required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries. USCCB continues to urge HHS, in the strongest possible terms, actually to eliminate the various infringements on religious freedom imposed by the mandate. Bishop Richard Bishop Richard Pates, Bishop of Des Moines, noted: The problem with the HHS mandates and religious liberty has not been resolved. In fact, the USCCB and other Catholic, ecumenical and secular entities vigorously continue to seek redress of these First Amendment concerns through legislative and judicial initiatives and in ongoing contact with the executive branch of government. Andrew dinners are high on the list of Bishop Pates priorities in promoting vocations. Priests are called upon to invite all high school or college-age men that may benefit from this relaxed and fun evening with Bishop Pates. It is an opportunity to listen and ask question for young men looking at how God is calling them in life. The tentative dates are Nov. 7 in Osceola, Dec. 12 in Des Moines, and Dec. 19 in the Adair region. Bishop s Christmas retreat for men Bishop Pates is hosting a discernment retreat the weekend of Dec. 21 at Creighton University in Omaha. Young men in high school or college-age considering religious life are invited. New Diocesan Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry A new position has been created, the Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry, filled by Mayra Moriel de Banuelos. Around the Diocese Sacred Heart School hosts bullying seminar with bestselling author and expert Jodee Blanco Sacred Heart School will host a bullying survival and prevention seminar with New York Times bestselling author and bullying survivor turned activist Jodee Blanco on Thursday, Nov. 8. Blanco will hold different workshops throughout the day for all Sacred Heart School students, faculty, staff and families. At a time when bullying has become a serious national epidemic preventing an estimated 160,000 children from attending school every day the Catholic schools from the Diocese of Des Moines are taking proactive measures to combat this important issue within its schools. The Catholic schools are involved in a multi-year series, Leading Safe Schools, focused on anti-bullying initiatives. Blanco s first workshops will be geared toward the students at Sacred Heart School. Her message to students is three fold: bullying is not just joking around, it damages you for life; bullying just isn t the mean things you do, it s all the nice things you never do; and, if you re being bullied or shunned, there s nothing wrong with you, it s everything that s right about you that makes you a target. At the conclusion of the teacher workshop, teachers will have concrete knowledge about what to do to help both the bullies and the targets in their classrooms. They will have scripted verbiage, specific strategies, easily implementable programs with guidelines and creative suggestions, and other valuable tools. In conclusion, Blanco will be meeting with all Sacred Heart School and Parish families and Des Moines diocesan faculty, staff and administrators. Insights into the plight of the adult survivor of peer abuse and suggestions on how to overcome those open wounds from the past. Blanco is the New York Times bestselling author of the memoir Please Stop Laughing at Me: One Woman s Inspirational True Story, which is now required reading in many schools across the nation. More than half a million students have participated in her anti-bullying program. and her story has drawn attention from national media as well as the U.S. government.
