1 THE SOUTHAMPTON & NETLEY : JANE AUSTEN 200 FESTIVALS 2017 "The Stinking Fish of Southampton" Beware of the unmeaning luxuries of Bath & the stinking fish of Southampton Miss Jane Austen, Love & Freindship, 1790 The Stinking Fish of Southampton Festival has tailored some unforgettable Jane Austen Inspired experiences to commemorate the time the Austens spent in Southampton As part of the Jane 200 anniversary FESTIVAL OPENING PERFORMANCE We have got a play Mansfield Park The Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre Present Taking The Flounce or Nonsense & Insensibility Spa Fever has gripped Southampton, Royalty, artists and naval officers are flocking to the town to take the waters and indulge in sea bathing. Mr Martin is keen that his baths and cures are endorsed by the leaders of society and has enrolled the help of the Austen Ladies to promote the health giving benefits of taking the flounce what can possibly go wrong? An hour and a half theatrical perambulation around the streets of Old Southampton so familiar to Miss Jane, her friends, her relations and nodding acquaintances Miss Jane thought little of her theatrical outings to the French Street Theatre in Southampton, hopefully our actors will fare better. 2 The Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre were surprised that there were no events being organised in Southampton to mark the bi-centenary of one its most famous residents. They gathered together support from many local heritage, amenities and community organisations and were successful in achieving a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver this festival, for which we are extremely grateful. GUIDED WALKS PROGRAMME I walk: I prefer walking Persuasion Walks start from various points, and all last approximately 1 ½ hours, unless stated otherwise. Walks are free, some have limited numbers and need to be pre-booked. For our walks we have availed ourselves of the talents of The Southampton Tourist Guides Association & The Hamble Valley Heritage Guides. Miss Jane was an avid walker whilst she lived in Southampton, and one of the walks will recreate an excursion she made. Find out how Netley inspired the gothic novel on a visit to one of the 18 th century s top visitor attractions. ***** August 13, 11am from the entrance gate to Netley Abbey, Netley Village Literary Netley Writers, novelists, poets, composers, artists from across the centuries have been drawn to Netley. Find out about the links to famous detectives, lost poets, country churchyards and medieval monks. ***** August 20, 11am from the entrance to Southampton Old Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Southampton From Revolutionary Times to Waterloo Jane Austen lived through stirring times. This walk with the Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery (FoSOC) looks at some of those who fought the French at sea and on land. Includes a Tale of Trafalgar, battles from the Peninsular War and some stories from the Battle of Waterloo 1815.

Find out more about the ills and cures that were rife in Southampton during its spa heyday Dress to Impress with Helen McCardle Helen runs a costume design business specialising in men s Regency costume, and will be letting us in on the secrets of Regency fashion Tudor House Exhibition Area Southampton Castle: A Ceremony in Stone Southampton Castle has been a feature of the landscape of the town since the 11th century. The original wooden motte and bailey castle was rebuilt in stone and extended several times. It was visited by kings and raided by pirates. It fell into disuse in the 15th century, as the defence of the town refocused on the walls, and was gradually encroached on by the townsfolk. This exhibition will explore the history of the castle, through archaeology, documentary evidence and the stone structures which survive today. It will also examine prehistoric and Saxon evidence from the castle area, and feature its Gothic re-invention in the age of Jane Austen. The Dolphin Hotel, The Jane Austen Suite *******

The Austen Family s involvement in the scandals of the day and the scandals in Jane s novels. To accompany the tea the Baroque performers Quattrio will delight with musical performances of trio sonatas actually pieces which require four performers playing combinations of violin, viola, recorders, harpsichord, cello. 8 Yes, yes, we will have a pianoforte, as good a one as can be got for 30 guineas, and I will practice country dances, that we may have some amusement for our nephews and nieces, Letter St Michael s Church Evening Concert with The Madding Crowd Doors 7pm Concert begins 7.30pm [close approx. 9.30pm] Southampton born Charles Dibdin, a composer and performer, wrote The Soldier Lament, which Jane amended to The Sailor s Lament in her copy. An evening of music, narrative, poems, dramatized reading and a bit of dancing.it is rumoured that Miss Austen will attend, when we will undoubtedly benefit from her observations! The Madding Crowd is one of the largest and longest established of the revival groups specialising in West Gallery music, as well as enthralling audiences with their performances; they have appeared on television in America and TV and radio in the UK. The specially curated concert will include music familiar to Jane Austen and featuring in her music book, as well as music and song that reflect the turbulent time in which the Austen s lived. There will be an interval with refreshments provided by the Friends of St Michaels and we ask that you book for catering purposes. The ball will be held this very evening at 7pm, at The Dolphin Hotel. THE JANE AUSTEN FESTIVAL REGENCY BANQUET & BALL The prospect of the Netherfield Ball was extremely agreeable to every female of the family Pride & Prejudice 7pm Jane Austen Ball Dolphin Hotel, Carriages at 11pm Miss Austen danced at the Dolphin s Assembly Balls, including with a French officer with dark eyes. The Ball will be led by the The HYPERLINK " Duke of Wellington's Dancers with music from Mrs Savages Whim and theatrical interludes from The Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre. Dressing up like Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet highly recommended The Dolphin Inn was the setting for the Southampton Assembly Balls.
