2 History of Haddon Hall Haddon Hall is an excellent example of a Medieval & Tudor fortified manor house, although its turrets and battlements were fashionable rather than funtional. The first mention of a house, here at Haddon, was in 1180, when the building (probably built around 1150) became the property of Avice, the eldest daughter of William Avenel II. Avice married Sir Richard de Vernon I, and the land remained in the Vernon family, until it passed to the Manners family in The Hall itself seems to have originally followed the plan of a Norman fort, with a curtain wall enclosing a courtyard and defensive tower. The Hall changed a great deal in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The stunning fresco seccoes in the Chapel were almost lost when they were plastered and white -washed during the reformation. The Parlour is a lovely example of dedications to the Royal Family in the family home. The ceiling being decorated with the Tudor Rose, and the panelling contains the portraits of Henry VII, the Tudor Arms and the initials of the future Edward VI. Stepping through the gates of Haddon can seem like stepping back in time. This is due to the Hall being uninhabited for 200 hundred years, from the reign of Queen Anne until the 20th Century, when the 9th Duke of Rutland restored the hall.

The classic option of a tour of the hall led by one of our guides is also available. The history of Haddon Hall is brought to life through our guided tours. With a wealth of fascinating stories to draw upon, students are immersed in the history of the Hall and the colourful characters connected with it....or Guided Activities. Our guides can take the students around the hall, completing four 20-minute activities to suit your subject. Each activity will consist of three sections: Learn - Interpret - Evaluate This option enables a more in depth look at features of the hall, whilst getting the students using their minds to discover the answers.

4 CREATIVE STUDIES Haddon Hall is the perfect location to inspire the creativity of your students. With beautiful Mortlake tapestries, fresco secco wall paintings, architecture and one of the country's finest collections of Early English furniture, we can slot into any part of the self led creative curriculum. CASE STUDY 1 A group of A-level textile students visited Haddon Hall in Spring They spent the day examining the tapestries and sketching ideas to create a garment based on their visit to Haddon Hall. The teacher tied in learning about Tudor dress which enabled crosscurricular study. CASE STUDY 2 A local primary school visited Haddon using public transport. The students spent the day sketching the Hall and Gardens and learning about its history. They proceeded to take their findings back to the classroom where they created a frieze using recycled materials for their assembly hall.

5 LITERACY THROUGH HISTORY Haddon is wonderful place to get students to use their imagination. With over 800 years of history, it is the perfect setting for any Medieval, Tudor or Gothic story. Haddon Hall is thought to be one of the houses that Charlotte Bronté based Thornfield Hall on, from the novel Jane Eyre. '...advancing on to the lawn, I looked up and surveyed the front of the mansion. It was three storeys high, of proportions not vast, though considerable: a gentleman s manor-house, not a nobleman s seat: battlements round the top gave it a picturesque look. Its grey front stood out well from the background of a rookery.' The environment is also a wonderful setting to get the students thinking about the language used through the years. Students can use the famous elopment story of John Manners and Dorothy Vernon to help them write their own story......or perhaps they can use one of the window etchings to create their own peom.

6 BOOKING AND VISITING Arranging Your Visit Provisional bookings should be made by telephone, by to or via our website (click on school visits). We strongly advise that you make a free familiarisation visit to the Hall before you bring your school party. To arrange a suitable date and time contact Selina on or e- mail selina@haddonhall.co.uk. Upon sending a booking form, a confirmation letter will be ed out to you. The Day of Your Visit It is essential that you arrive 15 minutes before the start of your tour, if applicable. Your Guide(s) will meet you at the Ticket Office. Please take special care when crossing the road from the car park to the Hall. Vehicles travel along it at speed. High visibility jackets are recommended. You are welcome to picnic on the grass areas outside the Gardener s cottage and the Restaurant. Unfortunately due to the nature of the site there is no sheltered area where students can eat. If it rains, your coach is probably the best place to picnic. Don t forget to visit the Gift Shop in the Gatehouse. Please indicate when you book if you wish to visit the shop.
