2 CHURCH ORGAN - 1 The present church was planned and built between It seems to have had a small organ as it was used in the summer chapel. When it became an independent parish in 1917, they used the same organ for many years. It is around 1929, the family of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, whose aunts lived next door to the church, donated the organ to the church. They dedicated the organ: In Memory of Zenaide Bouiver and Alexine Bouvier who were great aunts of Jacqueline Kennedy. They both died in the same year, The plaque on the organ mentions their names. History This Organ was manufactured in 1891 by the highly regarded company Hook and Hasting Church Organ Builders of Boston. It was first installed in the First Congregational Church, 123 Elmer Street, IN MEMORY OF ZENAIDE BOUVIER AND ALEXINE BOUVIER The manufacturers of the Organ Westfield, New Jersey. Later (date not known), it was installed in a church in Brooklyn, New York. This organ, thought to have been purchased for about $400. around 1929, was brought to this church by the Bouvier family. It was rebuilt by parishioners, all amateurs, in desperation after the professional mechanic quit. On September 28, 1946, Rev. John Salesses, Pastor, requested permission from the Bishop to repair (rebuild) the old second hand organ. On July 28, 1950, $3,000 was sanctioned to rebuild or to buy a new Organ, but no new organ was bought. Finally, Rev. Ralph Hogan decided to restore it in With parishioners donations, the organ was restored for $ 42,000 by George Bozeman of Deerfield, New Hampshire. The organ was blessed by Rev. Hogan and a dedication concert featuring eight organists was held on Sunday, November 25, 1990 to celebrate the restoration. The Organists were: CONSTANCE ANDREWS: Director of the Swanhurst s Chorus of Newport, former Music Director of Trinity Church, Concord, Massachusetts. EDWARD C. BRADLEY: Choir Director, United Church, Stonington, Connecticut, former Organist, St. Thomas More Church. REV. KENNETH DORSCH: Rector of St. John the Divine Church, Saunderstown. MARTHA HARTMAN: Organist, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Kingston. CONSTANCE HEGARTY: Music Director, St. Peter s-by-the-sea, Narragansett. DIANA JACKSON: Music Director, Kingston Congregational Church. KIRSTEN JOHNSON: Music Director, Peace Dale Congregational Church. GEORGE KENT: Music Director, Christ Church, Westerly, Director of The Chorus of Westerly, Professor of Music at the University of Rhode Island. There were additional concerts each Sunday of Advent played by Paul R. Ladd Jr., the Organist, St. Thomas More Church. The organ was restored In Memory of Timothy Mee. The bellows was installed In Memory of Lorraine O Hara and Alfred Martin.

3 Today is the Second Sunday of Lent. This week is about beloved sons, Isaac and Jesus. In the first reading from Genesis, Abraham is told to sacrifice his only son. He prepares to do just that. The reading from Romans reminds us that God's only Son was sacrificed for us. In the passage from Mark's Gospel, the disciples are shown that Jesus is God's beloved Son. In each of these readings a beloved son is brought to the brink of death. Abraham's obedience and trust in God is tested. Jesus is not tested but revealed to his disciples, who do not understand what they are seeing. Abraham and the disciples are told to listen. By listening they are brought beyond death into life. Our Lenten preparation is about listening for the word of God even when, like Abraham and the disciples, we are asked to do what we think we cannot do.
