VALUE OF HOSPITALITY AND WELCOME From the Curb to the Pew ministry is generally the first interaction newcomers or visitors to our parish encounter when coming to St. Patrick church. The most impactful way is a gentle smile and friendly greeting at the front door. That greeting makes all the difference when it comes to influencing the unchurched or newcomer s feelings and sense of belonging as they step into our church. Our mission is simple: to affirmatively greet each person coming into and out of church, to look at them, to smile, and to engage them with a welcoming or exiting phrase. We would like each person who comes to St. Patrick to feel that they are genuinely welcome, and that their presence is desired and valued. Volunteers do a lot of good things, but ministers change the culture and make a difference If you can put a smile on your face, if you can share some kind words of welcome to our visitors, maybe God is calling you to this Hospitality/Welcome Ministry. The From the Curb to the Pew ministry workshop will be offered on Wednesday, May 23 at 7pm. This training is for those currently involved in this ministry as well as anyone wanting to be involved. Sign-up sheets can be found at the parish Information Desk, or please call or Louanne McClemont, lmcclemont@stpatrickshamilton.ca KRISPY KREME S ARE BACK!! Our youth at St. Patrick are happy to let you know that Krispy Kreme donuts will be on sale at all our Masses the weekend of April 29. Donuts are $10/ dozen or $1 each. Proceeds from the donut sale will be used for the upcoming annual Steubenville Conference weekend in Toronto in July. These funds aid in offsetting the cost of transportation and rooming for the students attending the conference. CATHOLIC WOMEN S LEAGUE The Catholic Women s League of Canada calls all people of faith to join nationwide in 12 Hours of Prayer for Palliative Care on Friday, May 4th during National Hospice Palliative Care Week, as a profound witness to the sanctity of human life. All parishioners, family and friends are invited to join us in solidarity on Friday from 6-7 p.m. for the last hour of prayer in the church. Those unable to attend are encouraged to join in prayerful support. Members of our group have been busy since January knitting and crocheting. We have produced 14 shawls which were blessed at the 9:00 AM mass Saturday, as we celebrated the feast of our patroness, Our Lady of Good Counsel. The shawls will now be given to people who are in need of prayer and comfort during a difficult time in their lives. If you would like to know more about our group, join us Tuesday, May 1 at 6:30 PM.

STORIES OF LIFE AND FAITH: Our Experience with DREAMS BY PAIGE SABOURIN The first time I heard about DREAMS was 5 years ago. Grade 12 students from St. Mary who had just gone on the trip that year, came to my elementary school to share their experiences. After their presentation, I couldn t wait until I was in Grade 12 and I could go on DREAMS too. I have talked to many different people since I first found out about DREAMS and they had all said the same thing. How it is such an amazing experience, everyone in the town is so welcoming, building the house is so fulfilling etc. But honestly, you really have to experience the trip for yourself. Jacob s group and mine spent the week in two totally different locations. My group stayed in Palo de Caja, a small town an hour outside the main city San Jose de Ocoa, and yet both groups were treated the same way. The locals were more than happy to take us into their homes and treat us like we were family. When we walked up to our worksite or anywhere else in the village, it felt like we were celebrities. Everybody driving by on their motorcycles or sitting outside their houses would yell Hola or Como esta or would just wave or smile at us which made us feel so welcome. The house we built was for the community leader Rafael, and his family. The house was pretty large compared to the typical Dominican homes. We used cinder blocks and mortar, or mescla in Spanish, to build up the walls and we got started on the foundation for the roof before the end of the week. We were so proud of how far we got with the house and Rafael and his family were so grateful that we were there helping build their new home. Although we didn t speak much Spanish and the Dominicans didn t speak much English, we found other ways to communicate. We bonded through laughter, playing sports, colouring books, blowing bubbles, music, and even hand signals and sound effects. We especially bonded with the kids. They were so happy and so full of energy. When we weren t working on the house, we were playing with the them. They would tease us and we would tease them right back and it didn t even feel like we just met. One of my favourite memories from the trip was when we got some time off from building the house and everyone was just hanging out in the area outside our house playing with the kids. A young girl was sitting in the shade colouring in a colouring book. I sat down beside her and she showed me what she wanted me to colour. My favourite part was when we came across the outline of a cow and I pointed to it and said MOO! and she laughed and said moo right back to me. This was such a nice moment because I realized that even though we didn t speak the same language, cows go moo and that was the same in both Spanish and English. We sat there for an hour and a half colouring almost the full book, and I will always remember that awesome memory with that little girl. Before I went on DREAMS, I expected what I ve heard from people who went on previous trips about the poverty and the way of living in the DR. But after experiencing the trip myself, I realized so many different things. One of the most important things I realized was just how lucky and blessed I am living in Canada. My parents have good jobs and they make money so that I can have a sturdy roof over my head, I can be well fed, and I can have opportunities many people do not have like the ability to go to University next year. Something that I am so thankful for that I took for granted before the trip is water. In the village one day, the girls wanted to shower. We had one large bucket filled with water that we could use to wash ourselves. We used up the whole bucket. The locals informed us later that that was their source of water and that they didn t know when the hose was going to turn on again and they could get more water. This really opened my eyes. The house we were living in had so many people and we just used up all of their water. Thankfully, later that night, the hose turned back on and the locals were so happy running around filling up every bucket in the area so they wouldn t run out again. In Canada, we couldn t even imagine running out of water, but in this area, it could happen every day. Although the Dominicans do not seem to have much, they have learned to live with what they ve got. And they are happy. After experiencing DREAMS, I have changed the way I look at life, and I m sure a lot of students who went on the trip this year, and previous years, also feel this way. I am beyond grateful that I had the opportunity to go on this trip and share some of my experiences with you. If you have the ability and the opportunity to do something as amazing as this, I recommend you take it and your life will be changed for the better. Thank you for reading.

WELCOME TO THE OBLATE FATHERS We extend our warm welcome to Oblates Fr. Mark Blom, OMI and Fr. Mario Azrak, OMI. They are here for a couple of weeks visiting Oblate parishes and schools sharing reflections and awareness of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Fr. Mark is the Oblate Vocation Director for the province of OMI Lacombe. Fr. Mario is currently working with the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate (MAMI), partners with the Oblates in serving the poor through prayers, finances and participation in missionary activities. He also assists Fr. Mark in his vocation ministry. If any young men, age would like to know more about the Oblate life and ministry, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet with them, ask the questions or simply discern what God is calling you to do in life. For more info, please check YEAR OF OBLATE VOCATIONS In response to the call of the General Chapter, our Oblate Superior General announced the Year of Oblate Vocations from December 8, 2017 to January 25, The theme is Come and See! (John 1:39): Focusing on the Joy and Generosity of Our Oblate Life. This Year of Oblate Vocations will both give support to and be strengthened by Pope Francis call for a year dedicated to Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In fact, his personal message to the Oblates at the audience with the members of the General Chapter on October 7, 2016, placed before them the urgency to commit themselves to vocation ministry in light of the needs of the Church. The work to be done in order to achieve all of this (a Church for everyone) is vast; and all of you also have your own specific contribution to offer The current field of mission seems to expand every day Therefore, there is need of you, of your missionary courage, your availability to bring to everyone the Good News that frees and consoles (Acts, Address of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, p. 5, English Edition). These words, and his entire message, do not sound like Pope Francis believes the Oblates have done their job, that they can retire their Crosses and can now fade into the past. The Church is counting on them to respond to the needs of the poor today, and to write new pages in the history of evangelization! Please join in prayer for the Oblate vocations PRAYER FOR OBLATE VOCATIONS Holy Father, we come to you because Jesus asked us to pray that you send workers into your harvest. Therefore, send us generous young men, passionate for Jesus, willing to make of their whole life a total oblation to you, to become close to the poorest and most abandoned, and to proclaim the Gospel. May they burn with the same fire that you enkindled in Saint Eugene; may they come to be part of his family and, with all the Oblates, may they continue the work of Redemption. Mary Immaculate, who first gave Jesus to the world, be with us as we pray.

DREAMS TRIP TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND THE DOMINICANNA POTTERY PROJECT The week of the spring break, Fr. Jarek and Ian Ford, Youth Minister, went to the Dominican Republic to experience the daily lives of the people in the province of San Jose de Ocoa and help build a house for a family while they were there. Though we have our own outreach ministry at St. Patrick, De Mazenod Door Outreach, the mission of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, which is the order Fr. Jarek, Fr. Tony and Br. Dan belong to, is to bring the Good News of Christ to the poor. To nourish their faith. To enrich their spirits. To live and work with them. Sharing the demands and joys of a full Christian life. This doesn t just mean serving the poor here in Hamilton, but throughout the world as well. This Mother s Day, Sunday, May 12, we will have a representative from the DominicAnna Pottery Project here at St. Patrick, selling pottery, hand-made in the Dominican Republic. Looking for a heartfelt gift for Mom? Purchase a one of a kind, hand-painted DominicAnna pottery piece and support the strong and beautiful women of Dominican Republic. Here is a brief outline of the DominicAnna Pottery Project: Nestled in the mountains of south central Dominican Republic is a small and very poor province called San Jose de Ocoa. It seems a universe away from the sun and beaches Dominican most of us think of. And it s where the DominicAnna Pottery Project lives. The project was created to empower the women of Ocoa to create sustainable, self-supporting businesses of their own. Working together, they create beautiful hand-painted pottery that reflects their community, strength, spirit and shared sisterhood. The sale of this pottery helps them support their families, but it does much more than that. It gives them hope for a brighter future. SISTERS OF THE POOR OF JESUS CHRIST The month of May is a very special month dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary. We, the Sisters of the Poor of Jesus Christ, will be praying the rosary with the families in their homes and will bring the statue of our lady and leave her with the family for one week. If you wish to have a visit with the Sisters in your home, please call us at We will be very happy to visit and to pray with you.

DE MAZENOD DOOR OUTREACH The Poor - The Marginalized - The Inner-CityYouth What a busy week it was last week! Numbers of guests at the Door for meals is ever increasing with many new faces each and every day. We re glad they ve been led here for help, to both quench their hunger & thirst, but also to help with their spiritual journey. Many souls are led to Christ via their hungry belly. Last Thursday we had a large group of Grade 8 students from St. James the Apostle School here to learn about what we do at the De Mazenod Door. They helped by serving meals to guests, packaging snacks, making sandwiches and also shared in a learning session on Outreach with Sherri as well as attending and participating in Mass with Fr. Scott Whitfield. Friday the staff of St. Patrick School both sponsored and helped serve at the Friday BBQ. Teachers, EA s and even Vito Colella, Principal and Tina Fricano, VP did their part by leading the way in service. We hope to have them all back with us again soon as they also brought sunshine and warmth with them! Thanks team! For the next few months we will have a volunteer here on a regular basis working with us both at the Door and with our Youth program. Cassandra Conti is participating in a Summer Volunteer Bursary program at King s University College at Western University. This provides OSAP students with the opportunity to volunteer during the summer as a way of contributing to their community and gaining work experience. For their volunteer hours, students receive recognition in the form of a bursary to assist with their tuition fees to King s for the next academic year. We have committed to 200 hours, because each 100 hours of volunteer time equals $1,000! Welcome Cassandra! De Mazenod Door Sponsors Fiesta Mall DE MAZENOD DOOR NEEDS Greatest needs include: Juice Crystals. Chips. Eggs. Soft Fruits. Bananas. Granola/Breakfast Bars. Yogurt. Hot Chocolate. Coffee. Coffee Whitener. Fruit Cups. Cereal Bars. Pudding Cups We are always in need of Cookies & Snacks, Ziploc Sandwich Bags, 8oz Styrofoam Soup Cups with lids, as well as Chicken or Beef Broth.
