WELCOME TO ST. PATRICK PARISH!! Summer holidays are now over and our schedules begin to return to normal. We have lots going on at St. Patrick, so please take note of upcoming events in our weekly calendar. To our parishioners and visitors to St. Patrick - we are happy you are here to celebrate and welcome any comments you may have. Please drop us a line at parishoffice@stpatrick hamilton, and let us know how your visit was. JOAN NOWACKI We celebrated the life of Joan Nowacki, a long-time St. Patrick parishioner, this past Thursday. Joan was a special lady - she truly put her faith on her face - in her smile and gentle ways for all to see. She had a grounded faith. When she found out she had cancer, she took it in stride. When she found out she only had a few months to live, again she took it in stride. She didn t change her plans for the summer, or her life or her outlook. She came to church, received the sacraments, she prayed, and she was calm. She had a deep down faith and was completely assured this was the ending of one chapter of the journey and the beginning of another chapter of life with God. Something for us all to think about and strive for! We will miss you Joan! HANSEL MARANAN! Someone very special to St. Patrick and the pastoral team has left to go back to the Philipines. Hansel Maranan came to us a year ago and volunteered doing many and varied projects at St. Patrick. He had come from the Philipines to be with his parents and brother here in Hamilton. His brother had suffered a debilitating illness, which rendered him completely helpless and in St. Peter s Hospital. In leaving to come here, Hansel had to leave behind his wife and two children, and during his time here, applied for their immigration to Canada. When he left his position as a nurse in a prison, his job was left open for one year, and if he did not return in time, his job would be gone. The immigration process to get his family here is still being worked on, but the timeframe to return to his job was nearly up and he had to say goodbye to everyone at St. Patrick. We ask for your prayers for Hansel and his family to return to us here in Hamilton. His elderly parents need him very badly to help with his brother, and we would love to see him back at St. Patrick!
WHAT S HAPPENING AT ST. PATRICK THIS FALL??!! LOOKING FOR NEW CHOIR MEMBERS A well practiced Choir is so essential to the success of any Parish. We can lift the hearts of those at mass in glorious song and help us to see God in the liturgy, simply by using the gifts and talents the Lord has given you. Make disciples of all those who encounter your voice by joining the Sunday morning 11:30 Choir. Practice is every Thursday at 7 PM. Let s fill the church with songs of praise. We are looking for people committed to coming to practice and Mass on Sundays and also making beautiful music! We are ready to create a great choir, and need help from this vibrant community. No need for any special training, we will all learn together! If you are interested, please contact me, Christina Crawford, at ccrawford@stpatrickshamilton.ca OR come up to the choir loft on Sunday mornings and let me know you re interested. RCIA Are you interested in becoming a Catholic or would like more information about the Catholic faith? The Rite of Christian Initiation, RCIA, starts Wednesday, September 19. For more information, please speak with someone at the Information Desk or call the office. BIBLE STUDY Do you want to experience true freedom? The Exodus is often seen as the defining moment in Israel s history, when God called Israel out of slavery in Egypt to freedom. Taught by Dr. Timothy Gray, Exodus: Called to Freedom, looks through the lens of Christ and the Church to show that this is not just Israel s story, it is our story as well; it tells us who God is and what He calls us to be. Mondays at 7 PM starting Sept 10th. PRAYER AND LIFE WORKSHOPS The Prayer and Life Workshops have already begun but would love to have you join them. Join us Thursdays at 7 PM, in the Chapel. This program was extremly well recieved last year, and it garnered exceptional reviews. Don t miss out on this exciting program. CWL - PRAYER SHAWL MEETING With each stitch we are sending our prayers and love to people in need of comfort during a stressful time in their lives. If you are hesitating to join us because you don t know how to knit or crochet or haven t done so in a while, don t worry! We have starter kits with everything you will need. Come, join us, learn a new skill and know that your beautiful creation will act as a big hug of love and comfort to someone in need. The CWL Prayer Shawl Group will be meeting on Monday, September 10th at 6:30 PM in the parish office. YOUTH GROUP LEADERS IN TRAINING MEETING Our Mission with Youth is charting a new course. In the month of August we met with several leaders in the field of youth ministry and education, and even polled parents and current youth about the programs we offer. We heard a lot and have learned a great deal, and look forward to making several new changes in the coming months. It starts with a leaders in training meeting this weekend with our youth. Please pray for our team of leaders and youth as we embark on an important turning point in our Mission with Youth. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO IAN FORD, YOUTH MINISTER AND LOUELLA LACERNA, VOLUNTEER EXTRORDINAIRE! We love staff birthdays at St. Patrick (actually we just like the birthday cake!). Happy Birthday to both Ian and Louella - two people who help make good things happen here at St. Patrick!!
TIME TRAVELLERS Children are the life blood of the church. A healthy church is filled with the sights and sounds of children at every mass. Children need to be engaged and excited about their expreince in church and understanding of Christ. Through our Childrens Liturgy program Time Travellers, we plan to do just that, but we need YOUR HELP. We currently only have 3 people helping in this program, but if we want it to grow we need more adults and young leaders in training. In our personal mission of creating disciples of all the world, will you help make disciples once or twice a month in our Childrens Liturgy program? Will you help us to grow this program so that we can fill the church with eager children who BEG to attend mass? We are getting ready to start a new series on Sunday, September 16 during the 11:30 AM Mass, called The Quest. Our faith is a journey that begins when we are small and never ends, as long as we are always taking our next step on our quest to grow closer to God. We are introducing this series because we believe there are five steps necessary to grow as a disciple: Sharing faith through evangelization; Tithing and Giving; Engaging in a small group; Practicing Prayer and Sacraments; and Serving in Ministry and Missions. At any age, a disciple can always make a move towards deeper friendship with Christ. This is a great program for all youth grades 1-4. We encourage all young people in the pews to join us to learn the teachings of Christ in a kid-friendly way. Please note - If you are interested, please sign up at the Information Desk or speak to Ian or JC. There will be an information and training session in the Chapel, Tuesday, September 11, 7:00 PM. A vulnerable sector police check is required to minister with children. SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT de PAUL STORE: FURNITURE DELIVERY AND PICK-UP DRIVER We are seeking a hard-working, reliable, organized and motivated person to join our team. The Furniture Delivery and Pick-up Driver is responsible for providing a high level of customer service and representing the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in a courteous and respectful manner. Accuracy in organizing daily activities for customer deliveries and donation pickup is a must. The driver will ensure all efforts are made for customer satisfaction while maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the company vehicle. Requirements: Current Police Check and an Ontario Class G Drivers Licence with a clean driver s abstract. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 9:30 3:30. We will accommodate your schedule, perhaps you can work with us one or two days a week? To arrange an interview please call our 429 Barton Street Store Manager, Karen at FLOODS IN KERALA, INDIA As you may be aware, the Indian state of Kerala has suffered devastating floods in which hundreds have died and over a million have been displaced. 6 OFF-SITE The beginning of the pastoral year is a great opportunity to evaluate our mission and ministry and set the priorities and vision for the next few months. We believe it s very important for the leaders of the parish to take some time for reflection and discernment to truly discover God s will for our faith community. That s why the Pastoral Team gathered last week for a couple of days at the Oblate Mission Centre here in Hamilton. We focused our reflections on asking the questions about our WHY (naming the purpose of the team), HOW (looking at the ways we can put this why into practice) and WHAT (discerning a concrete strategic plan for this pastoral year). WHY We began our sharing by looking at the moments when each one of us felt most proud to work for this Pastoral Team. Those were the moments when the miracles happened. So we then asked ourselves this question - what contribution did we make to the lives of others, and what has this allowed others to go on to do or be. These reflections led us to naming the purpose of our Pastoral Team, our why : We are present with humility and compassion, kindness and non-judgment; inspiring each other and ready to sacrifice So that people feel welcomed and inspired, want to become members of our faith community and disciples of Jesus Christ HOW We believe in shared leadership, embracing the same mission for the benefit of our faith community. So we refreshed our understanding of creating and working as a cohesive team. We based our reflection on the insights from our mentor, Patrick Lencioni, from the Amazing Parish movement. In order to bring our why into practice we have to and are willing to embrace the five behaviors of a team: 1. Building Trust: Team members who trust one another are comfortable being open, even exposed, to one another about their failures, weaknesses and fears. 2. Mastering Conflict: When trust is present, teams are able to engage in unfiltered ideological debate around ideas, issues and decisions that must be made. 3. Achieving Commitment: The ability to engage in conflict and provide input enables team members to buy-in or commit to decisions. 4. Embracing Accountability: After commitment is established, team members must be willing to hold one another accountable and remind each other when actions are counter-productive to the team. 5. Focusing on Results: Collective team results must supersede any personal objectives or pursuits.
WHAT Looking from the perspective of our why and working as a team, we discerned on practical ways to put this into reality. These are the specific areas of our mission and ministry in our parish: Compassionate Care De Mazenod Door Outreach Hospitality Mission With Youth Praise and Worship We decided that in order to be present with humility and compassion, kindness and non-judgment; inspiring each other and ready to sacrifice, so that people feel welcomed and inspired, want to become members of our faith community and disciples of Jesus Christ we have to continue our efforts to make an excellent Weekend Experience for all who come to our Sunday Masses. We believe that this will happen when Every Member is a Minister. That s why we will dedicate the weekend of October 13/14 as our Ministry Sunday, reflecting on the importance of this next step for the members of our parish. Please mark your calendars! We will also establish the Liturgy Committee, which will help us to co-ordinate liturgical ministries but as well make our liturgies/masses truly welcoming, uplifting and nourishing. We will continue improving our music ministry in both traditional and contemporary styles. Every Mass on the weekend will have a Mass Co-ordinator, who assures that all particular ministries are in place, offering exceptional weekend experience. We will also continue putting intentional effort towards good communications, beginning with our internal communication within the team, the bulletin, website and social media, as well keeping in mind that one Church one message provides clarity and transparency. Recommended resources: Amazing Parish website: We encourage everyone to take an on-line training course, AP Online, to better understand why, how and what we are trying to do here in our parish. It is designed to walk parish leaders and teams through videos and exercises, giving them the tools they need to build an amazing parish. AP Online is made available to you free of charge thanks to the generosity of our donors who believe your parish can and should be amazing. You can also follow us on (currently we have 363 followers). twitter.com/stpatshamilton And of course don t forget to check out our website at stpatrickshamilton.ca WELCOME BACK TO OUR REGULAR SUNDAY NIGHT FOLK CHOIR You know that summer holidays are over when our Sunday night folk choir returns to their regular schedule for the year. We hope all the choir members had a great summer and look forward to seeing and hearing you. We d like to thank Brother Dan and the Youth Band for filling in over the summer months. This group will return to their regular time at the 5:00 PM Saturday Mass. ONGOING PROJECTS IN OUR PARISH SOUND PANELS IN THE CHAPEL - This past week we addressed an issue with sound reverberation in our chapel. Since we reclaimed the chapel and began using it for programming, we have been challenged by how voices would carry. With the increased usage of the room, this issue needed to be addressed and Brother Dan was assigned to this project. He worked with a company from Burlington called The Quiet Room, who specialize in sound reduction in larger spaces. Panels were designed specifically for our chapel and were installed this past Thursday. The difference in noise reduction is astounding - about 50% less reverberation. As well, the panels are aesthetically pleasing and seem to soften and finish the room. Thanks Brother Dan for bringing this project to fruition! STAINED GLASS WINDOW UPDATE Here is a financial update regarding our stained glass window project: Funds Spent to Date - $127,850 Funds Raised to Date - $63,560 Please stay tuned for information regarding the next window in much need of repair, the Holy Family window.

DE MAZENOD DOOR OUTREACH The Poor - The Marginalized - The Inner-CityYouth NUTS AND BOLTS It is safe to say that nobody is the perfect Catholic or Christian. I am certainly counted among them. Then how can it be that so many people are looking for God and Jesus in the world? When I was a younger man, I struggled with the concept of how a God, that was nearly unperceivable to me at the time, could cause so much commotion in human history? This became clearer to me as I began listening to the stories about how people came to be in a relationship with one another. The homeless and our friends at DeMazenod Door Outreach, help each other in big and small ways every day. They are also among the most broken people I have met. For the most part, human nature tells us to look after our needs first, nearly to the exclusion of everyone else. With an outlook like this, it is a miracle we have ever evolved into the loving, compassionate, selfless or sacrificing people I meet every day. The reason we can see these things must be because we have been hard-wired and made ready to receive these virtues already. It was not until I experienced the virtues of being a Christian that I became more motivated to start being one. Love is the great communicator of selflessness, but the action of reaching out to others with time and the nuts and bolts make it real. Imaging trying to build a car without all the thousands of nuts and bolts that hold things together. It wouldn t get very far would it? The many things we do for other become the connecting pieces that hold things together. Enough said about what being a Christian is. What we really need to do is put it into action. Br. Dan Dionne I am a Christian, not because someone explained the nuts and bolts of Christianity, but because there were people willing to be nuts and bolts.
