2 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Patrick Parish: Through our lifetime we always mark the significant moments of life. Many occasions bring us together: when we share the stories of good and challenging times; when we show our support and care for one another. It s very appropriate to celebrate as the Church, the community of one family of faith, so we come together these days to mark 140 years of this particular community in the heart of inner-city Hamilton, St. Patrick church, that opened its door just ten years after Canada was born as a confederation. The walls of this beautiful building witness many significant moments of life. Just imagine how many children have been welcomed here to the life of faith through the Sacrament of Baptism; how many couples have said I do making a commitment at their marriage; how many people s lives have been celebrated here as we ve said our final goodbye to them at funerals. If those walls could only talk! There is certainly so much to be grateful for and so much to appreciate. The anniversary celebration is not only about remembering the past, it s about being present and thankful in this moment and also imagining the future and moving forward into new beginnings. Pope Francis has said, Instead of being just a church that welcomes and receives by keeping the doors open, let us try also to be a church that finds new roads, that is able to step outside itself and go to those who do not attend Mass, to those who have quit or are indifferent. We ve been discovering many new roads by being intentional through our hospitality and welcome ministry. We believe that a warm welcoming attitude is a first step to building fellowship and meaningful relationships within our community. We acknowledge the variety of cultures and backgrounds in our community and strive to treat every person with respect and care, as brothers and sisters in Christ. (from our Mission Statement). Everyone can come here, as they are, and feel at home! We together form church that lives and breeds love and compassion. As your pastors, we as Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, look forward to continuing this faith journey with you. PATRICK CHURCH - CELEBRATIONS We are very pleased to welcome Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, as he celebrates our 11:30 AM Mass, in honour of the 140th Anniversary of our wonderful parish. Our celebration continues after Mass with a reception in St. Patrick School gym, which will include some speeches from dignitaries, tours of the church and tables set up by the various ministries at St. Patrick. We hope you are able to join us, enjoy a bite to eat, and a visit with parishioners and friends. All are welcome to attend. Until our regular folk choir returns in September, each Sunday evening our Youth Band will begin singing praise and worship songs just before Mass at 7:00 PM. Come early and sing along with them.

3 RESTORATION/RENOVATION COMMITTEE HERITAGE FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE As part of our celebration of the 140th anniversary of St. Patrick, we will have artist s renderings of what the Restoration/Renovation Committee has come up with to date. This been a huge undertaking by the committee over the last two years, and we are most appreciative of their efforts to date. We have had one meeting with the Building Committee at the diocese and have just received correspondence from them that they would like to further discuss some design and liturgical concerns they have, so these renderings may not end up being the final end result. Please take some time and come by the table and chat with some members of this committee. Along with restoration and renovation of course comes the money end of it. Leo Blain, Heritage Fundraising Committee Chair, will be present as well with a presentation showing projects completed, upcoming projects and future visions for our parish. BURLINGTON WELSH MENS CHOIR HERITAGE FUNDRAISING Join us Saturday, September 30, 2017, for a rousing performance of the Burlington Welsh Mens Choir. All are invited to hear the booming voices of this 40+ male choir perform here at St. Patrick. Tickets are $20 and are available for sale at the Information Desk. VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION A Volunteer Recognition event is planned for Sunday, September 27, after the 11:30 Mass. If you are currently a volunteer in any capacity at St. Patrick Church, you are invited to attend this event. If you would like to attend but have not yet received your invitation, please sign the form at the Information Desk as you leave Mass. DIRECT DEPOSIT We have now been using pre-authorized giving for almost a year now at St. Patrick and have begun to see our collections stabilizing. However, as it is now summer and a lot of people are on vacation, we are noticing a downward trend in our collections. Benefits to the parish of giving in this way is regular, dependable contributions continue to come in, even in your absence, and this gives us the ability to more effectively plan parish programs and activities. It also means a reduction of paperwork in our office. From your end, you benefit from the convenience of having your offering automatically contributed to the parish. Many thanks to our parishioners who already support us in this way. If you are interested in using direct deposit, brochures are available at the entrances to the church, at the Information Desk or in our office. PARISH BARBEQUE AUGUST 27, 2017 Please join us after the 11:30 Mass, Sunday, August 27 for our annual parish barbeque. This event will be held rain or shine. If it rains, we will use St. Patrick School gym. There is no cost to attend this barbeque. Join us for Food, Fellowship and Fun!!

4 WHAT IS ALPHA?? Alpha introduces people to the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. We can say it is Christianity 101. ALPHA presents elements of Christianity that are held in common by all Christians, Catholicism 201(C201) goes on to further elaborate on key tenets of the Catholic Church. C201 examines aspects of Christianity that generally speaking, are uniquely Catholic (starting with the Church itself). Alpha introduces people to the first proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ, otherwise known as the Kerygma: Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you, and now he is living at your side to enlighten, strengthen and free you. (Evangelii Gaudium, 164). Alpha invites people to respond to the good news through a decision to follow Jesus. Alpha is relaxed, interactive, non-judgemental and lots of fun. It enables participants to ask the questions they wish to ask and doesn t assume any level of knowledge or understanding of Christianity. Alpha creates space for genuine exploration of life s big questions and provides the opportunity for people to form meaningful friendships with each other. Catholicism 201 follows the same format. Additional information is available at for info on the alpha course (weekly sessions over 12 weeks). Additional information on Catholicism 201 (8 weekly sessions) can be found at In support of the RCIA (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) we will be running an Alpha Course in the fall and Catholicism 201 course in the spring. ALPHA HELPERS REQUIRED Alpha Course helpers required: We are putting together our Alpha team for this fall. If any parishioners have already taken the Alpha course and would be interested in helping for the Fall Alpha session, we would welcome assistance in any capacity you feel comfortable. The course will run every Thursday evening, 6:30 to 8:30 PM, starting September 21st to December 2nd. Please contact Deacon Stephane at or via at szara@hamiltondiocese.com. Interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) may be for you. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member of the Catholic church, please speak with someone at the Information Desk, give the office a call, or pick up an application form at the Information Desk. In support of RCIA we will be running an Alpha Course in the fall (date to be confirmed) and Catholicism 201 course in the spring. Our next Kids Klub gathering will be on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 5-8 PM. All kids aged 7-11 are always welcome. We enjoy movies, games/video games, crafts, pizza, sweet treats and camp fires (yup, the means s mores!) - all in a Christ-centred environment. Just ring the doorbell at the parish office. 6 With a heavy heart... Friday was a very sad & solemn day at St Patrick Parish. Many tears were shed for the loss of a wonderful pet and for the aching hearts of those who loved him and cherished the amazing boy that TJ was. His memory will live on in all of us who reached out and patted his head more than once. He will forever know how much he was loved and the void he s left behind. Godspeed beautiful TJ. Run free with your Heavenly friends and know you will never be forgotten and will be forever missed. RIP MISSION WORK DIOCESE OF KUZHITHURAI, INDIA The weekend of August 19/20, we will have a missionary priest from the diocese of Kuzhithurai, India, present at all our weekend Masses. The diocese of Kuzhithurai is found in the southernmost point of India. Though small in territory, the diocese of Kuzhithurai is densely populated. There are about 850,000 people in an area of just 350 square miles. Catholics constitute about 30% of the population. Farming and masonry are the main traditional occupations of the Catholic community there. The major concerns of this diocese are: - Evangelization deepening the faith and spreading the gospel - Training catechists and other leaders among the laity for gospel work - Fostering vocations to the priesthood and religious life - Improving the socio-economic conditions of the poor - Promoting dialogue and understanding among Christians, Hindus and Muslims - Establishing and strengthening small faith-sharing communities. Due to the lack of proper medical insurance, many people with physical or mental handicaps do not receive adequate care. The diocese of Kuzhiturai has opened its doors to receive people with disabilities, especially children, and care for them. Adequate funding however, is not easily available. We need support to maintain and expand this program which provides medical, social, economic, psychological and spiritual assistance to several dozens of people with handicaps. Please be as generous as you are able in supporting these needs.
