3 EX CORDE GRANT Once again, we sincerely thank the Ex Corde Foundation, for their gift of $6,400, to be used for furthering our cause with the Mission with Youth in St. Patrick Parish. This money will be used to help defer the cost of our annual Steubenville Toronto conference, attending the Diocesan Youth Rally at Camp Brebeuf, as well as purchasing materials for our youth program. We are most grateful to the Ex Corde Foundation! FROM THE CURB TO THE PEW TRAINING Because of our visit this past week to a parish that really knows how to do hospitality, this training session has become paramount in its importance. From the Curb to the Pew already exists at St. Patrick, but we now know we can make it so much better. Join us and get excited about welcoming our parishioners and friends to our masses at St. Patrick. One of the comments we hear from people who have visited our parish is, You are all so welcoming here. This isn t happening at our church. As Church of the Nativity found out, The number one reason newcomers tell us as to why they come back to our church, is our hospitality. Our goal at St. Patrick is to make each person who comes here feel they are genuinely welcomed and that their presence is desired and valued. We are in desperate need of the following: Greeters, Parking Attendants, Hosts and Parish Information Desk ministers. Please consider this most important ministry and attend our training session, the date of which will be announced shortly. This training is for those currently involved in this ministry as well as anyone wanting to be involved. 4 REBUILT CONFERENCE TIMONIUM, MARYLAND Over the past four years, our pastoral team has attended the Amazing Parish conferences in various locations in the United States. We became aware of a book Rebuilt, Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost, Making Church Matter. The authors of this book, Fr. Michael White, Pastor, and Tom Corcoran, Assistant to the Pastor, were at the Amazing Parish conferences, and spoke eloquently from their perspective of a parish priest and a lay minister, about how they and their team completely transformed their parish. An excerpt from the forward, written by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, reads, Through trial and error, success and failure, and with some unexpected experiences along the way, they learned a lot about parish life. Most of all they learned to fall in love with their parish. Cardinal Dolan also states on the cover of Rebuilt, If you love your parish, read this book. We would highly endorse this recommendation! As a result of our attendance at the Amazing Parish conferences and reading Rebuilt, as a pastoral team, we decided to attend the Rebuilt2018 conference. This conference was WAY more than we hoped it would be! This parish in Maryland, outgrew their old church (which is now used as a meeting/youth/music area), and is part of their new complex (they call it a campus). Their old church did not hold as many as St. Patrick does. 5,000 people now attend mass regularly each weekend. Their new church and additional space cost $15 M and they are debt free because of their parishioners belief in good stewardship. Although we can t do a number of the things they do as a result of our space limitations, we can do some things, and our pastoral team will continue to work on some of the things we discussed during our 9-hour ride back from the conference. We are excited and can barely contain our enthusiasm for what we would like to see happen at St. Patrick. It is our hope, our wish, our dream, to continue to build on our successes here at St. Patrick, as we continue to grow into our own Amazing Parish. Please read below comments from the team that went to Maryland. Hospitality and welcome was overwhelming at the Sunday Mass experience and Rebuilt Conference at the Nativity Parish in Timonium, MD. You could feel it all the way through the experience, from the moment of arrival at the parking lot to the departure. It s certainly a priority that makes a difference for all visitors. Witnessing the pastors, pastoral teams and parishioners of many parishes from 30 US States and 10 countries participating at the conference who are so passionate about the renewal of their local communities, confirmed for me that there is a movement in the North American Church seeking a new beginning for the life of faith. The parish church is the heart of the whole Church. -Father Jarek

5 Was it just good ole Southern hospitality, or was it something different? From the moment we drove onto the campus of the Church of the Nativity, in Timonium, MD, (near Baltimore), it was evident it was not just Southern hospitality. We went to their Mass Sunday morning and the parking lot had at least 8 parking attendants. As it turned out, most of them were business professionals, all in their bright yellow safety vests. They welcomed us as we left our van. Two people were at each of the two sets of doors, greeting us with hi, how are you. Welcome to The Church of Nativity. Thanks for coming. Inside, we were greeted with a similar welcome as we entered into the church. People welcomed you and smiled as you sat in your pew. The music was joyful and extremely well done. The homily was meaningful, purposeful and prayerful. As we left, again their hospitality team thanked us for coming and wanted to know where y all from?. And that was just the Mass!! The Rebuilt Conference was equally as welcoming and most informative. My wish is that each and every one of you reading this, could have the experience we had. I look forward to everyone who comes to St. Patrick, feeling as welcome as I did at their Rebuilt parish. -Karen Ford There is only one word to express the experience of Rebuilt18. WOW. The hospitality at Church of Nativity was top bar. We already have an Amazing Parish, and what we return with can only make it an even more amazing Weekend Experience for our parishioners. -Louanne McClemont The Next Generation is a strong focus at the Church of the Nativity. While the rest of our team attended sessions geared towards all manner of parish life, I attended all sessions related to youth. With an army of volunteer Ministers answering the call of service, they believe excellent programs for kids and students are an essential part of a successful parish. More than 400 students a week attend programs designed to be fun, engaging, and educational, with an ultimate goal to make disiples. Proof that anything is possible through God and prayer. With a renewed spirit from this experience, we will seek God ss Guidance and the help of our parishioners to build a magnificant program in our Mission with Youth. -Ian Ford PRAYER! PRAYER! PRAYER! Whether personal, team, or ministry, they must be firmly rooted in Prayer! This was the driving message for me. All ministries lead by the Holy Spirit will bring forth vibrant, dedicated leadership, ready and willing to humbly serve in the Churches Vision. I am excited to see where the Holy Spirit will lead and set on fire the Parishioners of St. Patrick s Parish, to embrace and build an Amazing Parish -Sherri Ramirez What really inspired me at the conference was that they had 1000 people attending and coming from France, Austria, Mexico, Sweden, and others from Canada. To learn and see how they can improve and make the changes at their own parishes. It was a great experience and I am sure, slowly, we will try to make some changes happen here at St. Patrick s and of course with the help of our volunteers and parishioners. - Rita Kara

6 Catholic Education Week 2018 begins on Sunday, May 6. The Catholic schools in our parish will engage in a series of events to celebrate the ongoing gift of publicly funded Catholic education. You are invited to discover what celebrations are happening in your children s school and if possible, attend. Publicly funded Catholic education has existed in Ontario since 1841 and its graduates have served Ontario and Canada very well. The current generation of students in our publicly funded Catholic schools will serve with the same spirit and generosity as their previous generations. This year s Catholic Education Week theme is Renewing the Promise. The theme for CEW 2018 draws upon previous documents on Ontario Catholic education, namely, This Moment of Promise (1989), Fulfilling the Promise (1993) and Our Catholic Schools ( ). These three documents, while several years apart from each other, all speak of the unique mission of Ontario Catholic education, the importance of its shared leadership by all those involved in Catholic education and the critical role of Catholic education in contemporary society. Catholic Education Week 2018 combines the themes of reconciliation, solidarity, love, justice and ecology. The CEW biblical quote is For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him. Acts 2:39 KRISPY KREME S ARE BACK!! Our youth at St. Patrick are happy to let you know that Krispy Kreme donuts will be on sale at all our Masses the weekend of April 29. Donuts are $10/ dozen or $1 each. Proceeds from the donut sale will be used for the upcoming annual Steubenville Conference weekend in Toronto in July. These funds aid in offsetting the cost of transportation and rooming for the students attending the conference. Authentic faith always implies a profound desire to change the world. Here is the question we should ask ourselves: do we also have great visions and dash? Are we also daring? Do our dreams fly high? -Pope Francis

8 DE MAZENOD DOOR OUTREACH The Poor - The Marginalized - The Inner-CityYouth Last September we took on a Mohawk College Social Service Worker student - 2 days a week for our Outreach ministry. Cherise Merten came to do the Co-op portion of her studies. She was a very quiet young woman who was shy, yet eager to do whatever was asked of her. This is Cherise s last week with us and we will miss the bubbly, happy faced young lady who never ceased to smile at our guests at the Door. She has definitely been a light in the eyes and the hearts of all who she met. Thank you Cherise for allowing us to get to know you & for all you ve done for us, for our guests and for yourself! Never stop learning! You ve got this! Here s a little note from Cherise. Hi, my name is Cherise Merten. I have been at St. Patrick s Church doing my Placement for Mohawk College. Since my time here I have had a life changing experience. I have learned challenges, overcome barriers and learned what it s like to truly care about people without taking their power. Power is owning your mistakes when you do wrong; It s picking up the piece s when you have hit rock bottom and it is knowing the true worth of another human being, just like me. I would like to take the time to thank the people here at St. Patrick s for giving me the opportunity to learn what it is truly like to work, exist and love people. I have really learned a lot and have let go of fears that were holding me back from being who I am. It was truly an honor working beside such great volunteers and it really felt like I was part of a family. I hope to come back and volunteer some of my time to learn more. My future is what I make it and I hope everyone here is part of it and part of my future studies. It is my past that will change my future. Before I came to St Patrick s church I was quiet, filled with fear of the unknown and never thought I would make it. As I got to know the people, I started to warm up to everyone. I have never seen so much food help and thought come from such a building as this - it amazes me how people come together for a greater purpose to help those who are in need. I want to thank Kat and Sherri for teaching me so much and for making me a new person, but it wasn t just them, it was God. A shout out of thanks to all volunteers in recognition of National Volunteer Week this week! We simply could not do what we do without you! Thank you so much!
