Weddings at Saint Cecilia Congratulations to Michele Privé and Calen Brait who were married here Friday, July 27 and Amy Silverio and Alexander Ing who were married on July 28. May God bless the happy couples as they start this next phase of their lives together. SAINT CECILIA PARISH Film Crew Volunteers Needed Saint Cecilia is looking for three more volunteers to join the film crew that is working on filming, editing, and posting the homilies each week. If you have an interest in learning more about the filming and editing process, please contact Mary at stceciliaboston.org. Commonweal Discussion Today, July 29, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Humanae Vitae. For its August meeting, the Commonweal Readers Group will discuss articles that have appeared in the magazine over the past fifty years pertaining to the encyclical. These articles have all been compiled in the June 15 issue of Commonweal, reviewing the best of Commonweal on this subject. Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish We are pleased to welcome the following new members of our parish who have recently registered: Rich Sciretta of Boston, Stacy Fortunato and Robert Gray of Boston, and Kelsey Morgan of Gardner. If you have not previously registered with the parish, there are forms in the narthex for this purpose or you can register online at Happy Anniversary! Today we celebrate the baptismal anniversary of Mark Brown who was baptized on July 30. May the Lord continue to bless Mark with the grace to live out his baptismal call. Happy Feast Day, Mark! Welcome Home, Young Neighbors! Father John, Scott MacDonald, Amy Paulin, Janet Sweeney, Trevor Marrero, and twenty of our high school students returned home yesterday, July 28 from their week of service and learning in Winnebago, NE. We thank God for their safe return and pray that they have grown in their faith and in concern for those in need. May the good works performed by our young men and women continue as they settle back into their lives at home. We pray that they continue to respond to the call to help others recognize their own goodness, dignity, and self-worth. If you read Commonweal magazine, please join us. If you do not currently read the magazine, but would like to join the discussion, you can find the articles online under the title An Unhealed Wound: Commonweal and Humanae Vitae." If you do not have time to read the articles, but would like to listen in, you are also welcome. The discussion will take place on August 5 at 1:00 p.m. in Classroom 4. A Request from Catholic Charities For nearly 100 years, Sunset Point Camp has provided a dream vacation at the seashore to over 40,000 low-income, at-risk children aged 6-13 from Greater Boston. Nearly 450 boys and girls travel to Hull, Massachusetts each summer for a one or two week overnight camp experience letting them enjoy the fresh air, learn new talents, receive academic summer support and simply have fun. Sunset Point Camp is operated by our friends at Catholic Charities. They have mentioned to us that they always need donations of sunscreen for the kids at the camp. So the next time you're at CVS or Walgreens or your local supermarket, please consider picking up sunscreen and dropping it in the plastic bin identified for this purpose in the narthex. We have been told the higher the SPF number, the better and the staff prefers the spray-on version of sunscreen. The camp also needs kids' flipflops for boys and girls ages 6 to 12. 3

Please stop by and see Richard Clark after mass, or him at rclark@stceciliaboston.org. We look forward to hearing from you! CATHOLIC CHARITIES' FOOD PANTRY AT THE HAITIAN MULTI-SERVICE CEN- TER Did you know that August is the month when most food pantries and groups that feed the homeless experience the greatest demand for their services? It isn't around the Christmas holidays: it's August. Most summer school meals programs end in early August and families can suddenly find themselves with three or four additional mouths to feed at breakfast and lunch. Also, August is the month when family budgets are stretched to purchase back-to-school supplies and clothes. Given the current state of the economy for the working poor, our friends at Catholic Charities expect to see many more hungry families looking for assistance at their food pantry this month. We at Saint Cecilia Parish would like to help them meet this increase in demand. Please consider bringing the following items to the food baskets in the back of the church: peanut butter, tuna fish, canned chicken breast, cooking oil, Cheerios or corn flakes, cooking oil, white flour spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and tomato sauce. 5 By JOE KAY SAINT CECILIA PARISH IN A CAVE OR ON THE BORDER, THEY ARE ALL OUR CHILDREN Isn t it marvelous hearing the stories of brave divers putting their lives on the line to save children and a coach trapped in a cave in Thailand? Our hearts are torn by the thought of these terrified children wanting nothing more than to be freed from the cave and reunited with their families. We re also inspired by the stories of rescuers taking great risks. One sacrificed his life for children he d never met. Many others have put themselves in great danger each day for children they don t even know. This is the definition of love. One of the other good things about the rescue effort is the absence of judgement. We haven t heard negative comments assigning blame and excusing inaction. Regardless of how or why they got into this situation, these children need our help and we re going to give it. This is what happens when we recognize our shared humanity and find the courage to risk ourselves for others. Whenever we respond to someone s needs with courage and compassion, we bring God s love into the world more fully. The rescue stories also remind me of Mister Rogers and his life s message. He recognized every child as his own, and he responded to each one with the same compassion and commitment that he gave one of his own. In his mind, they all had the same intrinsic value. This Presbyterian minister spent his life reminding each of us that we re a beautiful and beloved child of God just as we are and we deserve to be loved that way, especially when we re in a difficult time. We see that same spirit in the divers putting themselves at risk in the cave, responding to the trapped children as if they are their own. It greatly saddens me to see such an opposite attitude in many people to the plight of immigrant children taken from their parents arms and trapped in camps around the country. This response is shaped not by goodness and an outpouring of love, but by fear and a rejection of our shared humanity. too. To do anything less is to lose our souls. When we hear about the children trapped in a cave, we recognize our kinship. We imagine how we d feel if that was our child in such danger, and we react with love. What about our kinship with children at the border? Why don t we listen to the parents descriptions of long, dangerous journeys undertaken to save their child s precious, God-given life? Why won t we hear their stories and allow ourselves to be moved with the same compassion? Our humanity and our faith insist that we identify with a child taken from their parent s protective arms and sent off with strangers in a foreign land with no guarantee they ll ever feel their parent s embrace again. Our hearts are lifeless and our faith meaningless if we can t identify with such a child or such a parent. We admire the cave divers, but they re no different than the immigrant parents. All of them are putting their lives on the line to try to save children something most of us never have to do. All are showing a heroism and a faith that should be admired, embraced and emulated. We should try to be more like the cave divers and the immigrant parents. When we create artificial distinctions between lives those in a cave and those in a camp we ve wandered into a cave of our own. We become the ones lost in a darkness that deadens our hearts. We cut ourselves off from the God who is love alone. We become the ones who need to be saved. ~ Joe Kay is the associate minister at Nexus United Church of Christ, Butler County, Ohio. The children in the cave need our help. The children at the border do, too. All of them are our children, without exception. Their parents deserve our help and support, 5
