To volunteer or for more information, please A special REQUEST FROM CATHOLIC CHARITIES Sunset Point Camp, located in Hull, serves as a dream "vaca-tion" for 300 children each summer. The camp was a donation to Catholic Charities in 1918 by the Knights of Columbus. The goal of the camp has always been to provide a free vacation for at- risk, low- income children from the Greater Boston area, without regard for their race, nationality, or designed around building life skills, including teamwork, leadership, self- discipline, self- esteem, sportsmanship, and good health. Many of the children live with the harsh realities of poverty, violence, and homelessness, and a host of other challenges, but for one week in the summer, these children have the opportunity just to be children, enjoy the fresh sea air, and simply have fun. Sunset Point Camp is supervised by our friends at Catholic to us that they always need donations of sunscreen for the kids at the camp. So the next time you're at CVS or Walgreen's or your local supermarket, please consider picking up an extra for this purpose in the narthex. We have been told the higher the SPF number, the better. Nativity Prep Our friends at Nativity Prep in Jamaica Plain are looking for volunteers to help in their library. The library has a nice collection of books and is an important part of the school day for the students. Nativity would like to have someone in attendance M- F from 9-1 to help the boys access resources of the library and also help with shelving and keeping things organized. They are most interested in having someone who wants to work directly with the boys. Because it s a reasonably big commitment of time, we d like to share the of interest, and if you have the ability to commit to a regular schedule at Nativity of at least one, but preferably two days Nativity Prep is an accredited, Jesuit middle school dedicated to providing a quality, tuition free education to boys of all faiths from low- income families residing in Boston s inner city neighborhoods. parish picnic next sunday! 6 What needs to change in us? By JOAN CHITTISTER, OSB We all do it all the time. We change jobs, states, houses, relationships, lifestyles over and over again as the years Real change is far deeper than that. It is changing the way we look at life that is the stuff of conversion. Metanoia, conversion, is an ancient concept that is deeply embedded in the monastic worldview. Early seekers went to the desert to escape the spiritual aridity of the cities, to concentrate on the things of God. Flight from the world separation from the systems and vitiated values that drove the world around them became the mark of the true contemplative. To be a contemplative in a world bent on materialism and suffocated with itself, conver-sion was fundamental. But conversion to what? To deserts? Hardly. The goal was purity of heart, single- mindedness of search, focus of life. We do not need to leave where we are in order to become contemplative. Otherwise, the Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Galilee surrounded by lepers and children and sick people and disciples and crowds of the curious and the committed was no contemplative either. Jesus the healer, the prophet, the preacher, the teacher, by that standard, was not engrafted into the mind of God. The thought appalls. No, surely contemplation is not a matter of place. location. Flight from the world is about shedding one set of attitudes, one kind of consciousness for another. On the contrary, we simply have to be where we are with a the good of the whole world in mind. We have to be on the corporate board with the public at heart. We have to be in the home in a way that has more to do with development than with control. What needs to be changed in us? Anything that makes us the sole center of ourselves. Anything that deludes us into thinking that we are not simply a work in progress, all of whose degrees, status, achievements, and power are no substitute for the wisdom that a world full of God everywhere, in everyone, has to teach us. To become a contemplative, a daily schedule of religious events and practices is not enough. We must begin to do life, to be with people, to accept circumstances, to bring good to evil in ways that speak of the presence of God in every moment. This piece is an excerpt taken from Illuminated Life by Joan Chittister (Orbis). We are what we eat In his sermons (below), Saint Augustine preached clearly that in the Eucharist we become, indeed we are, what we receive. At the Lord s table, then, we become and we are the Body of Christ.... That Bread which you see on the altar, having been That chalice, or rather, what is in that chalice, having Christ. Through that bread and wine the Lord Christ willed to commend his Body and Blood, which he poured out for us for the forgiveness of sins. If you receive worthily, you are what you have received. Sermons, [227] A.D What you see [on the altar] is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. But what your faith obliges you to accept is that the bread is the Body of Christ and the chalice the Blood of Christ.... How is the bread His Body? And the chalice, or what is in the chalice, how is it His Blood? Those elements, brothers and sisters, are called sacraments, because in them one thing is seen, but another is understood. What is seen is the corporeal species, but what is understood is the spiritual fruit. members. If, therefore, you are the Body of Christ and his members, your mystery is presented at the table of the Lord, you receive your mystery. To that which you are, you answer: `Amen... For you hear: `The Body of Christ! and you answer: `Amen! Be a member of Christ s Body, so that your `Amen may be the truth. Sermons, [272] A.D
