Welcome, Sister Mary! In conjunction with the Missionary Cooperative Plan of the Archdiocese, we are pleased to welcome Sister Mary Hamilton, a member of the American Province of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Sister Mary is with us to speak at all the weekend liturgies about the missionary work of the Society. The Society of the Holy Child Jesus was founded in 1846 by a Philadelphian, Venerable Cornelia Connelly and is an international congregation of religious women alert to the needs of the twenty-first century. Today the Society is in North America, Africa, Europe, Latin and South America and the Sisters live out the motto of the Society, "Actions Not Words," in a variety of ministries living out religious life in the third millennium. Following Sister Mary's talk, there will be a second collection to support the good works of the Society. Your customary generosity is appreciated. Welcome, Father Ryan! We are delighted to have Father Ryan Duns, SJ with us as our celebrant for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. liturgy. He is featured on one of our historic stained glass windows on the east side of the church. Born in present-day Algeria, Augustine was the son of a pagan father and Christian mother (Saint Monica). Augustine was a brilliant scholar in his youth who abandoned Christianity and led a dissolute life while living in Carthage, Rome, and Milan. At the age of 31, upon hearing a voice command him to open and read the Bible, he read from Paul's Letter to the Romans and converted to Christianity. Augustine was ordained to the priesthood in Hippo, Africa and eventually became a Bishop. He was consumed with converting the citizens of Hippo to Christianity and gained renown as a preacher. (Approximately 350 of his sermons survive today.) A profound philosopher, Augustine wrote several influential texts, including City of God and Confessions, which is considered a classic of autobiographical literature. Augustine is the patron saint of brewers, theologians, and printers. Notable Saints of the Week September 1 - Saint Beatriz de Menezes da Silva Patron of prisoners. September 3 - Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church Patron of musicians, singers, students, teachers, Popes, The pontificate, West Indies, choir boys. 4

DRIVERS NEEDED Each month parishioners have the opportunity to pick up donated meat, dairy products, and produce from three local supermarkets and deliver it to either Catholic Charities' Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester or the Pine Street Inn in the South End. This vital ministry takes place at 7:30 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday morning and on Sundays can be completed in time to attend the 9:30 parish Mass. Our upcoming dates include: August 29 and 30, and September 5 and 6. If you are interested in helping, please Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. CATHOLIC CHARITIES FOOD PANTRY AT THE HAITIAN MULTI-SERVICE CENTER Did you know that August is the month when most food pantries and groups that feed the homeless experience the greatest demand for their services? It isn't around the Christmas holidays: it's August. Most summer school meals programs end in early August and families can suddenly find themselves with three or four additional mouths to feed at breakfast and lunch. Also, August is the month when family budgets are stretched to purchase back-to-school supplies and clothes. Even though the Catholic Charities' pantry in Dorchester opens its doors at 9:30 a.m., folks looking to receive a bag of groceries began lining up at 7:45 a.m. Given the current state of the economy, our friends at Catholic Charities expect to see many more hungry families looking for assistance at their food pantry this month. We at Saint Cecilia Parish would like to help them meet this increase in demand. Please consider bringing the following items to the food baskets in the back of the church: peanut butter, tuna fish, canned chicken breast, Cheerios or corn flakes, white flour spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and tomato sauce. CATHOLIC CHARITIES' FOOD PANTRY We are looking for parishioners to help sort and bag donated groceries at Catholic Charities' food pantry at the Yawkey Center/Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester. Volunteers needed over the age of 10 to spend three or four hours starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 19. This opportunity can accommodate up to 12 volunteers. As you know, for six years parishioners at Saint Cecilia, especially our Faith Formation children, have been providing much-needed donations to this food pantry. Every other Sunday morning, volunteers drive our donations, along with items we pick up from three Boston Whole Foods stores (the Symphony, South End, and Charles River Plaza stores) and Trader Joe's in Hanover, to the food pantry. This opportunity will give parishioners insight into the great works done by Catholic Charities. If you would like to volunteer, please Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. 5

6 Jesus, the Bread of Life - A Homily from the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time You may have noticed that we've been hearing a lot about bread during these past five weeks. Every three years, during Year B of the Sunday Lectionary, we take a five week detour from the Gospel of Mark to hear the "Bread of Life discourse" from chapter six of John's Gospel. This summer sequence provides an extended reflection on the importance of the Eucharist, the sacrament that is "the source and summit of the Christian life." The author of the fourth Gospel approaches the Eucharist from a unique vantage point. John's Gospel does not have an "institution narrative" at the Last Supper in which Jesus blesses bread and wine as in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Instead, there is foot washing. From John's perspective the real presence of Christ is also found in service, and the Eucharist leads to service. John's Gospel dedicates an entire chapter to the Eucharist Jesus is the "bread of life" and the Eucharist is his parting gift to us. What follows is a wonderful homily on the Bread of Life given on August 16 by Father Michael Ryan, Rector of Saint James Cathedral, Seattle. We hope you enjoy it. -Ed. By MICHAEL G. RYAN One of the novels of the distinguished 20th century American writer, Flannery O Connor, has a title she borrowed from the gospel according to Matthew: The Violent Bear It Away. The novel isn t exactly uplifting: it s full of darkness and spiritual conflict, but it has a message. In one memorable passage, a very eccentric old man tries to drive home some religion to his great-nephew who s not interested. The old man tells the boy: You were born into bondage and baptized into freedom, into the death of the Lord, the death of the Lord Jesus Christ! The boy isn t buying it. It makes no sense to him that his freedom might have anything at all to do with Jesus. But the old man persists: Jesus is the Bread of Life, he tells him. But the boy has no interest in the Bread of Life. He s not hungry for it and he doesn t want it. In fact, he senses and here I quote that the heart of his great uncle s madness is this very hunger, and he s afraid that it might be passed down, might be hidden in his blood and might strike some day in him and then he, too, would be torn by hunger like the old man and nothing would heal or fill him but the Bread of Life. The young boy s reaction may seem extreme but it raises a question we might well consider. How much do we hunger for Jesus, the Bread of Life? Are we ever torn by hunger to use the novelist s expression? Seldom, I think. Too seldom. That s because we have so many competing hungers in our lives - hunger for autonomy, hunger for acceptance, hunger for security, hunger for success, hunger for things that make us feel good, or look good: things we can buy, things that promise diversion and delight, things that are supposed to make us happy but end up dulling our senses and wearying our souls, things that insidiously trick us into believing that even though the last thing didn t satisfy, the next thing will. It never does, of course not the shiny new SUV or the sleek sports car; not the latest in high-tech wizardry or the giant high-resolution TV; not the designer clothes, or the remodeled kitchen or the bigger and better house. Not sex, or a promotion, or personal prominence. No one of these things or even all of them taken together can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human heart. But we keep hoping. And we keep searching. And we have this secret fear (a secret sometimes even for ourselves) that if we were really to take Jesus at his word really let him be the bread to satisfy our hunger he might not be enough. So we hedge our bets. We give a nod to Jesus but we continue to load up on things, just in case. We re not a lot different from the people of Jesus time who were far more taken by his multiplication of the loaves and fishes (there was food you could sink your teeth into, after all!) they were far more taken by his miraculous feeding of the five-thousand than by his claim to be the Bread of Life. Dostoevsky once wrote, We humans seek not so much the holy as the miraculous. Now, certainly, the miraculous can be holy, but the point stands. We can be much more taken with the startling and the astonishing than with the common and the everyday. Weeping statues and dubious visions, some of them pretty questionable or even rather bizarre, quickly gain a following as if they were somehow more important than the daily appearances of Jesus in sister or brother, in bread and wine, in healing oil, flowing water, and saving Word. More of God in more of our lives is what gives us joy and peace in the midst of challenges and troubles. It s what spurs us to be the change we want to see in the world, to do justice by acting justly. It s what motivates us to seek the peace and prosperity of our city. It s what empowers us to truly love our enemies. Too often we do prefer the miraculous to the holy. The holy can seem dull and not very exciting, whereas miracles are anything but dull and absolutely exciting. Miracles are, by definition, extraordinary; the holy is often just ordinary. Miracles tend to be flashy; the holy tends to be quiet. Miracles are marvels; the holy is mystery. Miracles are a bolt of lightning; the holy is a gentle, refreshing dew. The holy is God becoming one of us, fishermen becoming Apostles, sinners becoming saints, you and I being transformed by grace, bread and wine offering communion in the Body and Blood of Christ. My friends, Jesus calls us to be holy. He promises no miracles. (Article continues on page 7) 6

7 (Article continued from page 6) That is not to say he never does them, but it is to say that he seems to favor the ordinary. And in doing so he makes the ordinary holy in the same way God did when he took on our flesh and blood, in the same way Jesus does when he becomes our food in the Eucharist. Jesus is the bread of life, said Flannery O Connor s old man. And so he is. Without him there is no life. So seek him. Seek the Bread of Life. Seek the holy. Hunger for the holy. And a miracle will happen. It will. Because the one who eats this bread will live forever! The Very Reverend Michael G. Ryan has been Rector of Saint James Cathedral, Seattle since Father Ryan has served on many church governing boards, including the board of directors of The National Catholic Reporter, the board of the Institute of Theological Studies at Seattle University, Catholic Community Services of Seattle-King County, the Providence Foundation, and the Church Council of Greater Seattle. Father Ryan is also community pastor for the L'Arche Noah Sealth Community of Seattle. In 1999 he was awarded a doctoral degree in humanities, honoris causa, by Seattle University. In 2012, the Association of US Catholic Priests honored him with the Blessed Pope John XXIII award for keeping alive the vision and spirit of Vatican II. In Praise of the Dog Days: An Ode to Summer, Pets, and Friendship. We re in what they call the dog days of summer. For many of us, every day is a dog day. Or a cat day. Or fish day. Or bird day. Or Aren t pets great? Don t you love how the dogs comes running to the door when you get home and show unrestrained excitement? All they want to do is lick your face and show you how glad they are to see you. And it doesn t matter that you ve been gone only fifteen minutes to run an errand. It s wonderful to be loved with such reckless abandon. Wouldn t it be nice if people loved us that way, too? Well, except for the face-licking part. Or how about when the cat jumps on your lap, curls up, and purrs loudly and contentedly as you sip your morning coffee, reminding you that there s no other place on Earth that they d rather be. Right there with you, absorbing your warmth and love with a total, relaxed trust. The best place in the whole world. Wouldn t it be nice if somebody said that being with you is the best place in the whole world? Let s fess up: There are times when we get so aggravated with people, it s nice to get away from them and sit on the couch with the dog contentedly stretched out next to us. Or to sit there and let the cat s purrs transform our lap into a sacred space. Pets are so much easier to get along with than people. They re not as complicated and unpredictable, not as demanding and challenging, not as mysterious and messy. People are very messy. And that messiness makes relationships a portal to the divine. As much as we like to be with our pets, we have to keep going out the door and dealing with people. Amazing people. Frustrating people. Inspiring people. Loving people. Broken people. Confused people. Self-doubting people. Challenging people. Lost people. People who have all the same anxieties and fears that we do. Relationships make us grow into who we are meant to be. And the process is always, always, always messy. If there s no messiness, there s not much relationship. Relationships tap into our insecurities and make them bubble up and out despite our best efforts to ignore them or keep them hidden. They highlight our fears and insecurities in bright, bold colors. They grow and develop in their own time and have their own confusing and confounding rhythms. They challenge us and fulfill us and yes, they make us want to beat our heads against the wall, depending upon the time of the day. Relationships are miracles written with leaky pens, in smeared ink. Yeah, it s pretty cool to have a dog lick our face or a cat curl up on our lap, but it s quite another thing to look into the eyes of someone who really loves us and isn t afraid to show it. They don t completely understand us we don t even understand ourselves, so that part isn t surprising. But they want to try to understand as much as they can because it makes them feel closer to us. They re willing to pay the price for being in relationship with us. They re willing to wrestle with the fears and uncertainties and feelings of inadequacy that relationships unearth theirs and ours. They decide that we are worth all of this. They listen, even when they re not entirely sure what we re trying to say. They re patient, even though we ve just fallen back into the same bad habit we ve been trying to break forever. They forgive, even though we ve promised not to do again what we ve just done again. They try to meet our needs, even though they re not exactly sure what to say or what to do much of the time other than to just hug us and remind us that we re important to them. They re willing to dive into the messiness of relationship and let it seep into their hair and ooze into their ears and embed itself under their fingernails. And for reasons that make us forever thankful and grateful, they re willing to let the messiness of relationship into their hearts, where it gets redeemed. These crazy, amazing, grace-filled people want to see all of us the messy parts, the pretty parts, the crazy parts, the broken parts, the take-your-breath-away parts and love all of us. And in a truly courageous act, they let down their walls and let us see the messy, ugly, broken parts of them, too. It s important to embrace those people. Also, to try to be one of those people. To love with an unrestrained joy and a holy purr. Purring encouraged. Face-licking is optional. Joe Kay is the associate minister at Nexus United Church of Christ in Butler County, Ohio. He also writes a weekly blog at 7

The Archdiocese of Boston has in place a vigorous program to protect children from harm and to educate its ministers and faithful about the nature of abuse, with a goal of increasing knowledge, creating a safe environment for children, and recognizing and reporting potentially dangerous situations. The full text of the policy is also available in the narthex and parish office, as well as on our website. For Those with Celiac Disease If you have celiac disease, please let us know. We have a supply of low-gluten altar bread available for those who cannot tolerate gluten. Hearing Assistance in Church The church is equipped with an FM listening device. Small receivers are available for anyone who may have trouble hearing the sound system. Simply request a receiver from any one of our greeters before Mass. Access for the Disabled The church is accessible by elevator. Sunday Parking Reduced-rate parking is available on Sundays at the Prudential Center south side garage (Huntington entrance only, $14 up to 4 hrs, $20 up to 5 hrs) and at the Hilton Boston Back Bay ($5). Be sure to have a greeter validate your parking ticket before returning to your car. Saint Cecilia Rainbow Ministry Saint Cecilia Rainbow Ministry is a GLBTQ community at Saint Cecilia.
