We are so glad we can offer you higher quality products, support Haley House, and are happy to announce that the cost to the parish has not increased at all! We'd like to say a big thank you to Karen and Larry McMenamy for their leadership in this effort, and to all those who volunteer to make the coffee hospitality ministry a success. Thank you, also to all of you who support the ministry by leaving donations in the box on the table. Here's to another year of great fellowship and community after Mass! 2

4 LGBTQ Catholics Unite Monthly Meeting The Saint Cecilia Rainbow Ministry will host LGBTQ Catholics Unite monthly meetings starting in September. LGBTQ Catholics Unite will provide an opportunity for us to gather and discuss openly relevant topics, scripture, and current events. LGBTQ Catholics need a forum in which to share faith experiences, thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. Our hope is that people will feel supported, heard, and spiritually nourished. The first meeting will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. in Classroom 3. At this meeting, we will discuss further the purpose of LGBTQ Catholics Unite and solicit topics for future meetings, and share information about upcoming Rainbow Ministry events. On Sunday, October 28, 2018, at 1 p.m. we will have a facilitated discussion of "Being LGBTQ and Catholic." The meeting will be held in Classroom 3. All are welcome! "Tailgate" after the 6:00 Mass Prison and After Needs Help Every Monday night for the past six years, a dedicated group of parishioners has been providing a support group and dinner for men who are returning to the community after serving time in prison. If you are interested, either fill out the paper form located in the narthex or follow this link, also found in the bulletin blast: forms/rekawxnpdlo6fs6c3. 4 Keep our Doors Open! The Open Doors ministry began several years ago in the hopes that we could offer a peaceful sanctuary to the passer-by to enjoy quiet time with the Lord. We have found that while many enter with prayer in mind, others come to take in the beauty of Saint Cecilia, find out more about our history, or to learn about our vibrant community. As Open Door ministers, we have a unique opportunity to meet and interact with neighbors, visitors, and fellow parishioners. We are responsive to the needs of those that walk through our doors, whether it be answering questions or providing a silent, welcoming nod as they enter in to pray. In order to keep our front doors open, we need parishioner help. At this time, we are looking for anyone who is able to commit to a couple hours a month to this ministry. If this opportunity is of interest to you, please contact Amy Paulin at amy.paulin1@gmail.com. Thank you for helping to keep the beauty and peace of Saint Cecilia open.

5 RCIA - The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Saturday, October 6 6:00 p.m. Parish Hall Romero is the first offering of the Faith and Film series sponsored by the Adult Faith Commission. This is a riveting film, with a stirring performance by Raul Julia as Oscar Romero, and a moving portrayal by Richard Jordan of Rutillio Grande, a Jesuit friend of Romero who was assassinated by El Salvador death squads. Bishop Oscar Romero was a martyr murdered by members of his own government because of his insistence on the preferential option for the poor. Come and see this powerful movie that dramatizes Oscar Romero personal journey from conservative academic to passionate advocate for the poor and the oppressed. A short discussion will follow the movie. To help us know how much pizza to order, please RSVP to judycastaldi@hotmail.com. The cost of pizza is $5.00 per person. Even though there is no admission charge for the film, a free will donation is gratefully accepted to help pay for the cost of the license to show the film. This film series will be continued on the first Saturday of every month from October through June. Be sure to mark your calendars and join us as we try to bring our faith experience into a discussion of current culture as presented in cinema. BHCHP Fall Soiree On Thursday, October 18, Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program will host its third annual Emerging Leaders Gala, the 2018 Fall Soiree. The Soiree will feature an award ceremony, live band, passed hors-d'oeuvres, complimentary beer and wine, and even a cocktail hour with the penguins at the New England Aquarium! 6 Volunteer at Nativity Prep Saint Cecilia has a longstanding relationship with Nativity Prep, a full-scholarship, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income Boston families. Nativity has an amazing record of preparing boys for success in high school and college, and in the Jesuit tradition, inspiring them to become men for others. Fr. John serves on the Board of Trustees. To learn more about Nativity, visit Following are some opportunities for involvement: TUTORS FOR STUDENTS DURING EVENING STUDY Tutors work alongside Nativity staff to supervise the students and serve as one-on-one tutors with the boys as they complete their daily homework assignments. No prior experience is necessary and your skills, insight, and expertise will be put to good use by helping students to learn and grow through education. Tutoring sessions are held during our Evening Study period, Monday through Wednesday from 6 8 p.m. To volunteer contact Joanne Coluccio at jcoluccio@nativityboston.org or at DINNER COOKS FOR EVENING STUDY Before Evening Study, we provide students and volunteer tutors with a well-balanced, nutritious meal, and enable students and tutors to interact, socialize, and get to know each other. September is Hunger Action Month The economy may be improving since the Great Recession, but the recovery is still leaving many of Americans who were hit the hardest behind. Millions of people are still struggling to get by because of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living. It s a simple fact: A child s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough healthy food to eat today. But in America, 1 in 6 children may not know where they will get their next meal. For the more than 12 million children in the U.S. facing hunger, getting the energy they need to learn and grow can be a day-in, day-out challenge. Saint Cecilia's response to this crisis includes our support of Catholic Charities' food pantry in Dorchester. Please consider a donation of one of the following items, which you can leave in baskets in the narthex: corn flakes or Cheerios, tomato sauce, canned tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, white flour pasta, peanut but ter, cooking oil, or canned chicken breast. See St. C RUn! Our team for the Boston 10K for Women is gearing up and ready to go, just look at our new logo! With the race on October 8, there's still time to join us and sign up! The cost for registration is $50 per person. If you'd like to run, please lbennett@stceciliaboston.org for instructions on how to officially join the team. For more information about the race you can visit Saint Cecilia P A R I S H Pie Sellers Needed! As part of our on-going relationship with Community Servings, we are looking for parishioners willing to assist with their annual Pie in the Sky fundraiser. Every Thanksgiving pie sold for $30 feeds a Community Servings client in Eastern Massachusetts suffering with a life-threatening illness for one week. The delicious pies apple, pecan, pumpkin, and sweet potato are baked by some of the most generous local restaurant chefs and caterers and are the perfect dessert for your Thanksgiving table. If you are willing to help sell pies at Saint Cecilia liturgies as well as to your friends and colleagues, please Mark Lippolt at mark. lippolt@gmail.com. Mass Simulcast Just a reminder that you can also participate in the 9:30 liturgy by watching the Mass being simulcast on large screens in the Parish Hall. Families with young children may find that the proximity to restrooms and the ease of managing strollers in this larger space make the Parish Hall more convenient. 7

12 WHAT WE LOVE, WE WILL PROTECT: HOW FAITH LEADERS ARE SHOWING UP FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE By ROBYN PURCHIA Churches are typically peaceful. But the silence inside San Francisco s iconic Grace Cathedral was particularly welcoming last Wednesday. Hundreds gathered within the gothic building for a Multi- Faith Service of Wondering and Commitment hosted by the Episcopal Diocese of California and nonprofits GreenFaith and Interfaith Power & Light. Participants were invited to reflect on and be inspired by the wonders of creation. But they were also encouraged to make bold new commitments to protect the planet and its inhabitants from the ravages of climate change. What we love, we will protect, the Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, Episcopal Bishop of California, told the estimated 500 attendees. That s the spirit that we re undertaking with this service. The Multi-Faith Service was one of the opening events of the three-day Global Climate Action Summit, which also began in San Francisco on Wednesday. Leaders and people from around the world gathered in the city to celebrate achievements and make new commitments. As wildfires and hurricanes fueled by climate change devastated Americans, the conference offered a ray of hope. But environmental activists protested the Summit too, including a group that stood outside Grace Cathedral as the Service began with a sign reading, Governor Brown, Shame On YOU. California s leader convened the Summit and set the state on an ambitious path toward renewable energy, including committing California to 100 percent renewable energy by Yet, his administration also permits oil and gas drilling near homes, hospitals, and schools. Amidst the shouting and jockeying for media attention, the Multi-Faith Service was a reminder of how far the climate movement has come in the United States and the necessity of stronger resolutions to protect creation. Christians have long seen a connection between their faith and caring for creation. In the Hebrew Scriptures, God created the Earth and its inhabitants, including humans. God gave humans a special task dressing and keeping the Garden of Eden. The idea of stewardship and creation care comes from this basic, but critical, direction. A desire to care for the environment also stems from the Christian traditions of compassion and love. Congregations have long worked to alleviate hunger, lift the poor and the vulnerable, and comfort the sick. Creating community gardens, making energy more affordable, and working to avoid the worst effects of climate change, which are disproportionately felt by low-income communities, stem from these traditions. As the wildfires, storms, floods, droughts, and heat waves associated with climate change become more severe, so has awareness and action among people of faith. Two years ago, at St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City, religious leaders and members of the spiritual community gathered beneath two giant, LED-lit, flying phoenixes to voice their vows to reverse climate change. Less than a year later, Pope Francis published a landmark encyclical calling on all people to care for our common home. This year, the Episcopal General Convention passed 18 creation care resolutions, including committing the denomination to the Paris Accord, a global agreement to reduce climate-change causing emissions. The Convention also put in place a newly developed carbon tracker, which functions like a Fitbit tracks steps. The web-based application is currently being piloted by four congregations before being released in It s very accessible and usable, Rev. Andrus said. You can see how your congregation is doing and the Diocese of California. As a testament to the growth of the creation care movement, hundreds of people of faith turned out to participate in the Rise for Climate, Jobs & Justice march in San Francisco the weekend before the Summit. The march started with an interfaith service along the city s waterfront. Rev. Susan Hendershot, president of Interfaith Power & Light, expressed her surprise at the number of people in attendance. 12

13 The wild parrots in the trees were noisy, but the couple hundred people in attendance were so quiet, Rev. Hendershot said. It felt full and rich. There was a lot of presence and holding space intentionally around prayer, meditation, and loving kindness. The same ethos was present at the Multi-Faith Service in Grace Cathedral. The main hall was so silent, you could hear a pen click. And individuals and congregations were eager to make public resolutions to minimize their impact on the planet. Leaders at the service unfurled a scroll containing the names of over 12,000 congregations that had committed to clean energy. The faith community s strong engagement for a livable future offers a lot of hope. But, as the protestors standing outside the Cathedral highlight, to ensure a livable future, engagement should be complete. All congregations should commit to 100 percent renewable energy, reduce the carbon footprint of members, and press policymakers to make major commitments. What happens once the Multi-Faith Service attendees leave the gothic walls and stained-glass windows of Grace Cathedral really matters, according to GreenFaith founder Rev. Fletcher Harper. Widespread action needs to happen quickly and at scale. We ve got people in North and South Carolina who are evacuating their homes because of a hurricane, Rev. Harper said. Religious leaders need to move from rhetoric into action. GreenFaith is coordinating a global, interfaith campaign called Living the Change. Next month, from Oct they are inviting groups to host local sustainability events around the globe to inspire more commitments and raise awareness through an Earth-friendly, vegan community celebration. GreenFaith anticipates more than 100 faith events during the campaign. The faith community is an important voice as leaders respond to the emergency of climate change. The spiritual qualities of a Christian life compassion, reconciliation, forgiveness, and courage can serve as a touchstone for all scared, grieving, and lost people. The work can also reconnect Christian individuals and congregations to each other and creation. The best human life cares about the vulnerable and struggles with injustice, Rev. Andrus said. That s the spiritual reality that we re working with. Our spiritual lives need nurture. ~ Robyn Purchia is the environmental columnist with the San Francisco Examiner, founder of EdenKeeper. org, which explores the relationship between religion and environmentalism, and the current development organizer with the nonprofit Mothers Out Front. 13
