2 Welcome! Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish, a Roman Catholic community that gathers day by day, week by week, to know and make known the grace of God. By means of this abundant grace, we enjoy a diverse and close-knit parish family young, old, rich, poor, of various ethnic origins and differing backgrounds. From our extraordinary music program to a growing children s faith formation program; from the various liturgical ministries to the many opportunities for social outreach that the parish provides, Saint Cecilia is a vibrant community of faith, centered on prayer and worship that tries to keep the Gospel close to heart and to live by Jesus teachings. Saint Cecilia Parish was established in At that time the Back Bay section of Boston along Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street was the residential section of the Yankee aristocracy. The maids ( Irish working out girls ) and coachmen who served these residents had long requested a church of their own. When Archbishop Williams granted their request and carved the parish from the territory of the Cathedral, they built a magnificent church out of their meager earnings. The church was dedicated on April 22, Its architecture is Romanesque, XII Century Norman. The main altar, notable for its massive simplicity, was carved from a single block of white Carrara marble. The painting in the center reredos is a reproduction of da Vinci s The Last Supper, and the dome above is an array of 24K gold rosettes. For the sixtieth anniversary celebration in 1954, a massive renovation project was undertaken. During this renovation, a statue of Pope Saint Pius X (canonized that same year) was imported from Italy and placed on the right side of the sanctuary. Above the statue are paintings from Pius life. On the left side is a statue of Saint Patrick, principal patron of the Archdiocese of Boston, and above it are three scenes from his life. Fourteen circular and sixteen square panels adorn the nave and arches of the church. The square panels are decorated with the symbols of Our Lady taken from the Litany of Loreto and the circular ones with symbols taken from the lives of the apostles. The great window of the Assumption framed by the two oak cases of the organ was installed in 1954 (the Marian Year) in spaces originally designed for windows but not until then used. The original organ of 24 stops was built in 1902 by the Hutchings-Votey Organ Company, Opus 1465, and was rebuilt in 1954 with 32 stops. In 1998, Timothy Smith and Theodore Gilbert began a massive reconstruction of the organ. The current Smith & Gilbert Organ of 4 manuals, 54 ranks, and 3,084 pipes was dedicated on the Feast of Saint Cecilia, November 22, Today we are experiencing something of an awakening within these old walls. Our numbers are increasing by 350 new households eah year, and we continue to grow in our commitment to issues of peace, justice, and service to our neighbors, both near and far. We ve been right here on Belvidere Street, in the same building for 125 years, but that does not mean that life here is stale, stagnant, or even predictable. We are proud to be entrusted with the legacy of Saint Cecilia Parish, where everything is the same, yet always changing; where we honor tradition while embracing the future; where God s love makes all things new.

His Rule directed that monastic life should balance work and prayer, and that monstaries should be places of hospitality. 6 Clothing Needed The men at Bridgewater State Hospital no longer have to wear prison issued clothing! However, many men don't have families of friends who can bring them alternative clothing. Men returning to the community from prisons and jails also need clothes desperately. Can you help? For the next 4 weeks, we will have a bin in the narthex to collect any gently used items. All donations will either be distributed by the state hospital, or the clothing rooms of the halfway houses in our neighborhood. WOMEN'S LUNCH PLACE Please keep in mind the Women's Lunch Place's need for donations of travel-size toiletries, particularly if your business travel includes hotel stays. Individual size shampoo, conditioner, and soap are always needed. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant (none of which can typically be found in a hotel room!) are also always in demand. Donated toiletries need to be unused, of course, and there is a plastic bin in the narthex for donations. ANOTHER WAY TO STAY IN TOUCH A good way to keep up to date with what is going on in the parish is to join our Facebook group. So far we have 2,127 members. There you will find photos from recent events, snippets of Fr. John's homilies, and more! Take a moment to join the group"saint Cecilia Parish." Wisdom and Mature Spirituality Group In life there is tragedy. What does that mean to you? How does faith help (or not help) you deal with the contradictions of life? These are a few of the questions that we will discuss at our next meeting on July 15 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. These questions stem from Chapter Four of the book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Richard Rohr, which we are currently reading. Please read Chapter Four and think about a comment or question for our July 15th meeting. At future meetings we will continue to discuss one chapter of this book each month. The book is available at libraries or you may purchase the book at store.cac.org, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble. Our Wisdom Group is a community of adults, journeying in the second half of life and looking to build a deeper relationship with our Christian faith through fellowship, trust, sharing and prayer. We meet once a month and are currently reading the teachings and reflections of Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM. We invite other like-minded individuals who would like to dig deeper into the practices of prayer and reflection. We welcome new members! For more information about the race, you can visit DRIVERS NEEDED Each month parishioners have the opportunity to pick up donated meat, dairy products, and produce from four local supermarkets and deliver it to either Catholic Charities' Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester or the Pine Street Inn in the South End. This vital ministry takes place at 7:30 a. m. every Saturday and Sunday morning and on Sundays can be completed in time to attend the 9:30 parish Mass. We need drivers for all the Saturdays and Sundays in July and August. Our Sick List Clean-Up You may notice that our sick list on page 5 is much shorter than usual. We are implementing a new system, that any name submitted for the list will be included in the bulletin for three weeks, and then taken off, unless otherwise instructed. SAINT VERONICA, JULY 12 Our stained glass windows add immeasurably to the beauty of Saint Cecilia Church and they serve an important purpose in reminding us of the communion of saints those men and women who were friends of God and who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. This week we celebrate the feast day of Saint Veronica whose stained glass window is on the west side of the church. Our window depicts Veronica with her eyes downcast, gazing on the cloth or veil she holds in her hands which has been imprinted with the image of Jesus' face. Veronica was a woman of Jerusalem who, upon seeing Jesus struggling with the weight of his cross as he walked to his crucifixion on Golgotha, offered him a cloth to wipe his face. When Jesus returned the cloth to Veronica she saw that it bore a portrait of his face. In 1297 Veronica's veil was brought to Saint Peter's in Rome by order of Pope Boniface VIII. Although little is known about Veronica and she is not referenced in the canonical Gospels, her simple, quiet act of charity towards the Jesus encourages us to treat those we encounter on their journeys with compassion. Veronica's encounter with Christ is also commemorated in the sixth Station of the Cross. Veronica is the patron saint of photographers and laundry workers. Saint Cecilia Summer Hashtag! 8 A Request from Catholic Charities For nearly 100 years, Sunset Point Camp has provided a dream vacation at the seashore to over 40,000 low-income, at-risk children aged 6-13 from Greater Boston without regard for their race, nationality, or religious affiliation. Nearly 450 city-based boys and girls travel to Hull, Massachusetts each summer for a one or two week overnight camp experience letting them enjoy the fresh air, learn new talents, receive academic summer support and simply have fun. Sunset Point Camp is operated by our friends at Catholic Charities. They have mentioned to us that they always need donations of sunscreen for the kids at the camp. So the next time you're at CVS or Walgreen's or your local supermarket, please consider picking up sunscreen and dropping it in the plastic bin identified for this purpose in the narthex. We have been told the higher the SPF number, the better and the staff prefers the spray-on version of sunscreen. The Camp also needs kids' flipflops for boys and girls age 6 to 12. WELCOMING THE STRANGER While visiting a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos last year, Pope Francis decided to bring twelve Syrian Muslims back to the Vatican with him on the papal plane. The Pope addressed the refugees and said, "As people of faith, we wish to join our voices to speak out on your behalf. We hope that the world will heed these scenes of tragic and indeed desperate need, and respond in a way worthy of our common humanity." Inspired by the Pope's words and actions, Saint Cecilia Parish is working with Catholic Charities to assist refugee families who have relocated to the Greater Boston area. With no friends or relatives in the United States, they have a great many needs. The parish has offered to provide them with supermarket gift cards so that they will have food while their applications for political asylum are processed. If you would like to purchase gift cards to Market Basket specifically and no more than $25 per card please feel free to drop them in the offertory basket. If you do not live near a Market Basket and cannot purchase a gift card, you can also help by making a check for $25 or $50 payable to Saint Cecilia Parish and putting it in the offertory. CATHOLIC DISCOURSE IN A DIVIDED NATION What we have here is a FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE. This famous line from Cool Hand Luke ( a famous Paul Newman movie for all you millennials) seems to sum up to polarization in our nation, and possibly in our church, today. It didn t end so well for Luke. How the Catholic Church can contribute to civil discourse about our mutual problems is the subject of the Commonweal Readers Discussion Group to be held on July 1 in Classroom 4 at 1:00 p.m. If you read Commonweal, the oldest lay managed Catholic periodical in the United States, please join us for this discussion. 10 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults "Go and make disciples" Matthew 28:19 This Easter we were blessed to initiate fifteen adults into the life of the Church. These men and women participated in the parish's RCIA process a process designed specifically for non-catholics and uncatechized Catholics who wish to explore a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ in the context of the Catholic Church. RCIA is offered each year for the following people: Individuals who have never been baptized and who wish to be baptized, confirmed, and receive Eucharist. Individuals who have been baptized in another Christian tradition and who wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church through the sacraments of confirmation and Eucharist. Individuals who were baptized in the Catholic Church but never received first Eucharist. The next season of RCIA will begin on Tuesday, October 2. The first eleven weeks are an "inquiry period" and anyone is welcome to attend without obligation or commitment. On the Third Sunday of Advent (December 16, 2018), those who feel called to be baptized next Easter will be received into the Order of Catechumens and then are counted among those who will receive the Easter sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil in Others will continue preparing for reception into full communion with the Catholic Church, and, in the case of uncatechized Catholics, to complete their initiation by being confirmed and receiving Eucharist. RCIA entails participation in 90-minute weekly sessions that take place on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00. These sessions will go from October 2, 2018 until May 21, There is also an expectation that participants attend the Sunday 11:15 liturgy together. It is at this liturgy that the RCIA community is dismissed following the homily to go downstairs to our Parish Pastoral Center to reflect together on the Sunday scripture readings. WISDOM FROM THE ANCIENT CHURCH St. Basil the Great (AD ) "Love of God does not spring from study. It is not from others, after all, that we learn to enjoy the light, to yearn for life, and to love our parents and those who nourish us. Much less, then, does love of God arise from external teaching. Rather, as soon as people exist they have the germ of reason, and this contains the power and impulse to love. In the school of divine instruction, therefore, we but cultivate this power and wisely nourish it; thus, with God's help, it is brought to full development. For our part, we shall endeavor here, as far as the Holy Spirit enables us, to fan into flame this spark of love for God that is hidden within you." This is a wonderful summary of what is at the heart of Christian formation. The RCIA is not a program or a class in Catholicism, but rather a process of discerning and ritualizing stages of gradual conversion that take place within the parish community. The process is about growing in relationship with Jesus and being accompanied and supported by both the RCIA and the wider parish communities. 12 CARE-LESS: THE SIN OF INDIFFERENCE By BRENDAN BUSSE, SJ A judge once asked Charlie Sheen why someone like him, handsome and famous, would have to pay for sex. Mr. Sheen explained that he didn t pay people to have sex he paid them to leave. Similar things could be said of many cheap intimacies in our lives. In the name of efficiency or convenience we avoid the costs of intimacy, and in doing so we pay a steep price. Mr. Sheen s insight is, in its way, a keen one: what we pay for is freedom from the pain of intimacy and not actually an experience of it. We exchange the reality of intimacy for isolation. This trade brings us to a place where our deepest desires are too painful to share and in that painful place we want only one thing of them: to go away. So we harden our hearts, we pay them to leave, and we find ourselves alone. I once heard someone say that they d rather commit a sin of passion than one of cold indifference, and though (thank God) these are not the only options I know what they meant. Let s just say that, when I stand before the judge, I ll have more explaining to do about the times I left too soon than the times I stayed the night. This is all to say that my greatest sins haven t been moments of too much intimacy; they ve been moments when I refused intimacy or confused it with something else, something convenient or easy, something passionless. To sin is to deny the duty of love, and cold indifference certainly fits into this category. Let s call it care-less-ness. There is a whole litany of saints and sinners who have loved me well many of whom still do even when I was unable to return the favor. It s not that I haven t offered my own share of tenderness, it s that being given the gift of presence, attention, or of care, is humbling. And this teaches me that, in the end, it s not my acts that I m concerned about as much as the times I failed to act, failed to respond to the gift of love, failed to accept it and failed to give myself to it in response. Often enough these failures were times when I disguised my being careless as being careful. Looking back on the life I ve lived thus far, I find that I don t regret many choices I ve made. But I sure as hell regret the times when I refused to choose, refused to make a decision. I regret the moments of passive or compulsive assent to the ebb and flow of entropy and decay a kind of assent that is essentially a denial of desire, acted upon or not. Of course we mustn t act on every whim, but when passivity replaces passion we find many abused or underappreciated relationships, and lots of wasted time. You can hurt a lot of people by never making a choice, and when out of fear of failure or mistake or unclarity we refuse to act we not only miss the mark, we miss an opportunity. We miss the chance of accepting consequence. There it is. Are we willing to live a life of consequence? Are we willing to accept that our actions (or inactions) are never inconsequential? Is there a greater sin than considering the gift of life and love your own, someone else s something of little worth? Isn t this the sin of indifference? Isn t this at the heart of most of our pain and hatred, carelessness, neglect, and refusal? Have we ever chosen convenience over consequence? Have we ever paid someone to leave instead of asking them to stay? It seems that apathy toward our self or someone else is among the gravest rejections of freedom and love. Indifference feigns tolerance by saying that you re acceptable in a way that suggests that it really doesn t matter who you are. Love suggests the opposite: that you re acceptable exactly because of who you are and not in spite of it. It s not that it doesn t matter what you do, it s that it matters absolutely. When you experience love and find true acceptance it s an experience of love not because they could care less about who you are, but because they couldn t possibly care more. In this life we can t afford to ask our desires to leave, because it is our desire, wounded and insecure as it may be, that will save us in the end. It is in the great passion of our lives that love is found; it is in our deepest desires that we discover the heart of God, a sacred heart. To hide in cold indifference is to smother a great and warming flame. Our hearts are burning within us. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the communal process through which non-baptized men and women become members of the Catholic Church. It is also suitable for those baptized in different faith traditions who are interested in becoming Catholic, or, for those who were baptized Catholic, but have yet to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and confirmation. Faith Formation for Children To register your child for our Faith Formation Program, please contact Scott MacDonald in the Parish Office. Marriage Couples who wish to prepare for marriage should contact Mark Donohoe in the Parish Office at least six months in advance. Care of the Sick To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion to be brought to those unable to attend the Sunday celebration, or for Viaticum for the Dying (Holy Communion for those in danger of death), please contact the Parish Office. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. Order of Christian Funerals The parish is prepared to celebrate the Vigil (wake) in the church. Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Team The CAP Team is responsible for training all parish staff and volunteers in mandated reporting laws and the Protecting God s Children program (VIRTUS). They also provide consultation and support to anyone in the parish who has concerns about reporting child abuse and neglect. Access for the Disabled Both the church and Parish Pastoral Center are accessible by elevator. Parking There is reduced rate parking for $11.00 at the Hynes Auditorium Garage located on Dalton Street on Sundays until 3:00 p.m. and every evening after 4:00 p.m. Please be sure to ask one of our greeters for a parking validation ticket before leaving the church.
