Following Lent and Eastertide, Ordinary Time will resume on Monday, June 10, the day following Pentecost. Next Week's Special Collection Next weekend, the second collection will beneft the Church in Latin America. Prayers & Occasions 4 NOTES ON THE CALENDAR Memorial of Saint Agnes, Virgin & Martyr 21 January A parishioner recently commented that when she joined the Saint Cecilia community she was excited to see how many of our stained glass windows were devoted to female saints. This week we celebrate the feast day of one of those women, Saint Agnes of Rome, whose stained glass window is on the East side of the church nearest the Hilton. We have no way of knowing why our forebears chose to honor Agnes with a window, but hers is a strikingly detailed and colorful work of art. It is believed that Agnes family were Christian Roman nobility and that she was born approximately A.D She suffered martyrdom at the age of twelve or thirteen on January 21, 304, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Our window shows Agnes holding a lamb, symbolic of her chastity and innocence and because her name means "lamb"in Latin [agnus]. She is also shown with a martyr's palm. On her feast day each year, the pope observes the centuries-old rite of the blessing of two young lambs, traditionally less than a year old, whose wool will be used to make stoles called palliums. During the blessing of the lambs, one lamb wears a crown of white flowers symbolizing Agnes' purity, while the the other lamb wears a red floral wreath, recalling her martyrdom. The wearing of the pallium, symbolic of the bond between an archbishop and the Pope, dates back to the fourth century, predating the miter and the crosier as episcopal symbols. Saint Agnes is the patron saint of chastity, gardeners, engaged couples, and girls. If you have never stopped to admire our Saint Agnes window, today is a great day to do so. Or join us for Evening Prayer in celebration of Saint Agnes on Monday at 6:30.

5 Wisdom and Mature Spirituality Group Today 10:00 a.m. Meet in the Parish Hall The Wisdom and Mature Spirituality Group is currently reading the book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr. At our meeting in January, we will discuss Chapter 9, which is about the spiritual gifts of aging. Rohr tells us, In the second half of life, we can give our energy to making even the painful parts and the formally excluded parts belong to the now unified field - especially people who are different and those who have never had a chance. If you have forgiven yourself for being imperfect and falling, you can now do it for just about everybody else. If you are in the second half of life and are interested in spiritual growth, please join us as we start the new year. We meet in the Parish Hall at 10:00 a.m. and always welcome new members. SAVE THE DATE Cabaret Night On Saturday evening, March 2, the Saint Cecilia Rainbow Ministry will be hosting the 4th Annual Cabaret Night, featuring the renowned Bobby Wetherbee. OUR HOMELESS NEIGHBORS Faith and Film: "I am Not your Negro" Saturday, Febuary 9 6:00 p.m. Parish Hall Powerful, personal, soul-searing are some of the words that accurately describe I Am Not Your Negro, a 2016 documentary about James Baldwin, based on his memories of Medgar Evans, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, his three close friends who were all assassinated. James Baldwin is as provocative today as he was decades ago. He callings us to confront the original sin of slavery and its persistent aftermath in the United States. The unique benefit of the Faith and Film series is a chance to share your thoughts and ideas about the films that you have just seen. Please RSVP to judycastaldi@hotmail.com. 7 By HOPE KELLY By any measure, Belmont is a long way from Iraq, yet it is starting to feel like home for one refugee family who resettled here just this month. They re already going up to the park, says Joan Horgan, a member of the Social Justice Committee at New Roads Catholic Community in Belmont. They can walk everywhere, they re close to public transport, and, most importantly, they feel safe. Safety is a brand-new feeling for this family -- a mother, a father, and two sons. All of them are refugees as defined by the United Nations: individuals who have fled their countries of origin and meet the U.N. criteria of having a wellfounded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. One family out of thousands Catholic Charities Grace Gaskill is overseeing the family s resettlement through the agency s Boston office. She hasn t heard them tell their story first-hand yet, as they speak only Farsi. My guess is their ethnicity is what made them have to leave because a lot of Kurdish people are not able to stay in that area because they re sort of a nation-less people, said Gaskill. They often face a lot of persecution in the countries where Kurdistan used to be: Iraq and Iran. Catholic Charities has more than 100 regional offices throughout the US and re-settles roughly one-third of the 50,000 to 75,000 refugees who enter the United States every year. The exact number is authorized by the president in consultation with Congress and various federal agencies and fluctuates each year. The application process is lengthy, with extensive interviewing, screening, and security clearance for each refugee seeking resettlement. A warm welcome at Logan The Belmont family waited two years in an Indonesian resettlement camp. Once cleared for resettlement, they flew for 30 hours, first to Dubai and then a second, 13-hour flight to Boston. When the father came through security at Logan Airport, he expected to see just two people: the case manager and From Iraq to Belmont: A refugee family resettles with help from local groups In advance of the meeting with Grace Gaskill and Catholic Charities on Tuesday, we wanted to provide an example of what the POWR program could look like here. 7 the interpreter, said Horgan,. Instead, he saw a group of 12 people with welcome signs and he started to cry. He did not expect that. Those 12 people were members of several Belmont churches including New Roads Catholic Community and Payson Park Church. Their warm airport welcome was one of countless steps in the long and complex process of resettling Belmont s first refugee family. In a sense, the process began in 2012 when the Social Justice Committee formed at New Roads Catholic Community, the combined parishes of St. Joseph s and St. Luke s. The group was already working on affordable housing and human trafficking when Horgan joined the committee in As an immigrant myself and hearing all that s happening throughout the world with refugees, I came forward and said, What are we doing for refugees and immigrants, Horgan said, who was born in Ireland. Call to action resonates A sub-committee formed and organized a day-long forum on refugee issues that was held at St. Joseph s last fall. 150 people attended and heard from experts, advocates, legislators, and immigrants themselves, including Catholic Charities Director of Refugee and Immigration Services Marjean Perhot, Horgan said. Education, inspiration, and a call to action--those were our goals, Horgan said. After the forum, I called Marjean back and said, We ve had the education, we ve had the inspiration. Now, how can we at New Roads help you? Perhot, Horgan said, suggested Horgan s group get involved with a program run by Catholic Charities elsewhere in the country called POWR. POWR stands for Parishes/People Organized to Welcome Refugees. It is an nationwide program developed by the United Conference of Catholic Bishops to mobilize, train, and support volunteers to meet the myriad needs of the thousands of refugees resettling in the United States each year. A big undertaking Other churches, synagogues, and community groups have (Continued on page 8)

The POWR program was started in 2010 with the goal of recruiting parishes and volunteers to help refugees adjust to transitioning to the US. Feel free to contact Anthony Ishak (anthonymishak@gmail. com) with any questions. (Continued from page 7) helped with one-time tasks like greeting at the airport or helping furnish an apartment, but this is the first time that any group in Boston has done all of that work through the POWR program, Gaskill said, who coordinates the POWR program for Boston Catholic Charities. We had less than two weeks to resettle this family from Iraq, said Horgan. We didn t have time to do a big fundraiser or anything. That s why we sent out requests for donations and put a registry online and collected all the items. We were frantically looking for an apartment and we wanted one in Belmont. Refugees typically resettle in urban areas where rents are lower, but the Belmont group was determined to settle the family nearby. A lucky break came when a landlord with an available apartment heard of their efforts and wanted to help. She dropped the rent, volunteers prepared the apartment and a group of military service members and veterans transported all of the donated furniture just in time. The family went to bed in Belmont in their new home on July 1. Now is when they start figuring out what life is like here: they start figuring out public transportation, they start figuring out where the grocery store is, she said. This week, both boys started English classes at Wellington Elementary School while their mother and father began their search for employment. Anyone looking for a skilled construction worker or welder is urged to contact Catholic Charities. Any and all employment connections are appreciated, said Gaskill. 8

9 P WR Parishes/People Organized to Welcome Refugees WHAT? In 2010, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops launched the Parishes/People Organized to Welcome Refugees (POWR) program to intensify volunteer involvement in resettlement at the parish level to create a welcoming environment for incoming refugee families. WHO? Any faith-based or community group interested in helping us resettle refugee families. WHY? Catholic Charities has a historic commitment to resettling refugees. Through our years of experience, we ve learned that refugees are more likely to thrive when supported by communities. HOW? Call or Grace Gaskill - grace_gaskill@ccab.org or to learn more about opportunities to support refugee families.lping to create a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people. THE GOAL OF THE POWR PROGRAM is to strengthen the ability of local churches to recruit and utilize volunteers to mentor and provide other needed supports to newly arrived refugees. The program relies on volunteer-led efforts to meet a range of resettlement needs such as housing, transportation, English language learning, acculturation, etc. The POWR Program looks different for every parish it engages, but some common opportunities include: Creating a core POWR team of 2-3 church members interested in helping refugees. Collecting household, toiletry, and monetary donations to provide the newly-arrived refugee family. Securing housing and setting up the apartment. Welcoming the family at the airport. Helping with resettlement tasks such as taking clients to sign up for benefits, go to doctor s appointments, and register children for school. Organizing special refugee events and outreach activities to help to promote integration into new community. Helping the family practice their English. RESILIENT FUTURE CITIZENS SURVIVORS Building a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people.

10 MARTIN LUTHER KING: 'GREATNESS IS DETERMINED FOR SERVICE.' By JOSEPH MCAULEY In his lifetime, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to countless numbers of people, first as a minister of the Gospel, then as a leader for civil rights and often as both. He spoke with the simple people and he treated with the great people, the famous who came across his path, whether they were popes or presidents, kings or prime ministers. To whomever he met, his message was the same: service, faith, fairness, dignity, brotherhood. One way or another he gave a variation of the same thought. He said: Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame but greatness, because greatness is determined for service. It was not, it was never easy to do: to extol justice in a world that denigrated it. Yet he spent the years of his brief adulthood doing just that. He was only 39 years old when he was killed by a sniper as he stood on a hotel s second floor balcony in Memphis, Tenn. The day before, he had unknowingly preached his last sermon to an eager congregation straining to hear his every word. At that time of his life, he had seen and heard enough to make a strong man weak and cry out in despair. And when he got up to speak in the church, he was pondering his plan for another march on the dederal capital in Washington, this time on behalf of poor people, which was to commence shortly. While in Memphis he also planned to offer his support to striking African-American sanitation workers who were not being treated fairly or justly. There was much he had done and there was much he had to do and there was no time to pause or be fearful. There was much to give Martin Luther King pause and reasons to be fearful. As often happens when one becomes a prophet, whether through chance or circumstance or duty the demands that such a vocation requires are daunting and may (and often does) cause one to reconsider or possibly turn back. Perhaps, at times, like the Old Testament prophets, Dr. King may have felt this way. Like all of us, he was not a perfect human being, but he was perfect in one respect: he knew that he could not shirk this chance, this circumstance, this duty. He knew that if he had to fight for anything, it had to be justice. He started out fighting out for justice not only for himself, but for everyone who shared the color of his skin and in time, through experience, prayer and reflection, he would come to realize that the justice he had fought hard for had to be fought on behalf of everyone, whether they shared his skin color or not. His life had taught him that. It is hard to believe that 48 years have passed since his time, more years than he ever got to live. When he was born on Jan. 15, 1929, he was born into a segregated world. In 1986 some 18 years after his death on April 4, 1968 his birthday would be designated as a national holiday. That accomplishment was 30 years ago and it was done despite the still considerable opposition from people who continued to oppose the very idea of civil rights. And 40 years after his death (in 2008), an African-American was elected to the nation s highest office. Well before that time, segregation had ended, but the ideals of service, faith, fairness, dignity and brotherhood he had talked about and had worked toward are still far from fruition and seemingly unreachable as ever, despite the gains and advances that had been achieved. Dr. King knew that the work of God as well as the work of man is never-ending; the arc of justice ever needs to be bent but at the same time, we cannot be broken in the process. He is often remembered for the March on Washington and the I Have a Dream speech and for his last sermon where he declared that he might not get to the mountaintop. But there are other words of his that are pertinent now and need to be reflected upon, especially in these tense times, when racial concord is nearly fractured and the threats of terror harms our peace: When evil men plot, good men must plan. When evil men burn and bomb, Good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, Good men must commit themselves to the glories of love. Where evil men would seek to perpetuate an unjust status quo, Good men must seek to bring into being a real order of justice. 10

11 We thank you for your church, founded upon your Word, that challenges us to do more than sing and pray, but go out and work as though the very answer to our prayers depended on us and not upon you. Help us to realize that humanity was created to shine like the stars and live on through all eternity. Keep us, we pray, in perfect peace. Help us to walk together, pray together, sing together, and live together until that day when all God's children Black, White, Red, Brown, and Yellow will rejoice in one common band of humanity in the reign of our Lord and of our God, we pray. Amen. Martin Luther King, Jr. January 15, April 4, 1968
