The Good Samaritan Ministry offers prayerful support to all women and men, families and communities impacted by violence. We gather together to offer hope and encouragement to one another as we seek God s peace, wisdom, and mercy. We go and do artsy things with the residents and they get so much joy from it. Summer Picnic at Kendall Roof Garden Sunday, July 17 I 1:45-3:30 p.m. Kendall Roof Garden, 90 Broadway, Cambridge SAINT VERONICA, JULY 12 Our stained glass windows add immeasurably to the beauty of the church and they serve an important purpose in reminding us of our communion with the saints whose lives can serve as models for us today. Our renovation of the church included repairs to most of the stained glass windows. This Tuesday we remember Saint Veronica whose stained glass window is on the west side of the church. Our window depicts Veronica with eyes downcast, gazing on the veil she holds that has been imprinted with the face of Jesus. As the legend goes, Veronica was a woman of Jerusalem who, upon seeing Jesus struggling under the weight of the cross, offered him her veil so that he could wipe his face. When Jesus returned the veil to Veronica she saw that it bore a portrait of his face. In 1297 Veronica's veil was brought to Saint Peter's in Rome by order of Pope Boniface VIII, where it remains. Although little is known about Veronica and she is not referenced in the canonical gospels, her simple, quiet act of charity towards Jesus encourages us to treat with compassion those whom we meet throughout life. Veronica's encounter with Christ is also commemorated in the Sixth Station of the Cross. Veronica is the patron saint of photographers and laundry workers. Join us with the young adults from St Anthony's Shrine in Boston for a summer picnic. Bring a dish to share and a smile. We will provide the plates, cups and utensils. dancing in the dark: Summer Boat Cruise Saturday, July 23 I 7:45-11:00 p.m. Boston Harbor Get your danceface on. DRIVERS NEEDED Each month parishioners have the opportunity to pick up donated meat, dairy products, and produce from three local supermarkets and deliver it to either Catholic Charities' Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester or the Pine Street Inn in the South End. This vital ministry takes place at 7:30 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday morning and on Sundays can be completed in time to attend the 9:30 parish Mass. We need drivers for all the Saturdays and Sundays in July. JOIN US AT COMMUNITY SERVINGS Join us from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 when we volunteer in the kitchens of Community Servings. We are looking for volunteers to assist in preparing and packaging nutritious meals for those who are home-bound with life-threatening illnesses throughout Eastern Massachusetts. No culinary skills are required, but volunteers need to be at least thirteen years of age. Please feel free to join us even if you can't be there until a bit later than 10 a.m. Community Servings is conveniently located next to the Stony Brook T Station in Jamaica Plain. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Mark Lippolt at: mlippolt@ hammondre.com. Shakespeare on the Common & Parish Picnic Shakespeare on the Common has become a Saint Cecilia tradition. If you have never joined us for this fun evening under the stars, you should consider doing so this year. The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is presenting Love's Labour's Lost, a high-spirited romantic comedy filled with dazzling wordplay, strong comic characters, and a few unexpected twists. Love's Labour's Lost will both charm and touch the heartstrings of young and old alike. We are going on Thursday, July 21. The play begins at eight o'clock on the Boston Common near the Parkman Bandstand. As we've done in the past, we will be reserving space (thank you, Jenny Jones!) and will have a potluck picnic beforehand at six-thirty. For more information please contact Jenny Jones at jennyinjp@gmail. com or The play is free, though donations to the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company are appreciated and can be made via A REQUEST FROM CATHOLIC CHARITIES Sunset Point Camp, located in Hull, serves as a dream "vacation" for 300 children each summer. The goal of the camp has always been to provide a free vacation for atrisk, low-income children from the Greater Boston area, without regard for their race, nationality, or religious affiliation. Sunset Point Camp is supervised by our friends at Catholic Charities. They have mentioned to us that they always need donations of sunscreen for the kids at the camp. So the next time you're at CVS or Walgreen's or your local supermarket, please consider picking up an extra tube of sunscreen and dropping it in the plastic bin identified for this purpose in the narthex. We have been told the higher the SPF number, the better. The Camp also needs kids' flipflops for boys and girls age 6 to 12. ANOTHER WAY TO STAY IN TOUCH A good way to keep up to date with what is going on in the parish is to join our Facebook group. So far we have 1,138 members. Take a moment to join the group "Saint Cecilia Parish." 6

7 By IN S SAN MARTÌN SAINT CECILIA PARISH New Feast Touts Mary Magdalene as Paradigm for Women At Pope Francis s request, the annual observance on the Catholic calendar of St. Mary Magdalene, referred by some as the repentant sinner or the prostitute, and also the one who first witnessed and proclaimed Jesus resurrection, has been made a major feast marking women as the first evangelizers. Liturgically speaking, the decision puts Mary Magdalene on par with the celebrations of the male apostles. On the modern Church calendar, saints are remembered with a memorial, a feast, or a solemnity. On July 22, already designated a feast of Mary Magdalene, there are another 11 saints similarly honored, but now with the decree released on Friday, hers takes precedence. Published in Latin, the decree was issued by the Vatican s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, headed by Cardinal Robert Sarah. It says that this woman, recognized as one who loved Christ and who was very dear to him, can be considered by the faithful as a paradigm of the ministry of women in the Church. In a letter released along with the announcement, the Secretary of the Congregation, Archbishop Arthur Roche, argued that the decision speaks to the current moment facing the Church, which calls for a deeper reflection on the dignity of women, the New Evangelization, and the greatness of the mystery of Divine Mercy. Roche drew attention to the fact Mary Magdalene was the first witness to Jesus resurrection, and also the one tasked with sharing the news with the apostles. Saint Mary Magdalene is an example of true and authentic evangelization; she is an evangelist who announces the joyful central message of Easter, he writes. The British archbishop also says that Francis took this decision in the context of the Holy Year of Mercy to signify the importance of this woman, who showed a great love for Christ and was much loved by Christ. Roche also notes that St. Thomas Aquinas, considered a Doctor of the Church, referred to St. Mary Magdalene as Apostle of the Apostles, because she was the one who announced Jesus resurrection to them and the world. Therefore it is right that the liturgical celebration of this woman has the same grade of feast given to the celebration of the apostles in the General Roman Calendar, and shines a light on the special mission of this woman, who is an example and model for every woman in the Church, Roche wrote. Although the popular imagination think Dan Brown s The Da Vinci Code is sometimes tempted to fantasize about Mary Magdalene as Jesus wife or lover, in Western Christianity she s traditionally been identified with three figures in the New Testament: Mary of Magdala (Lk. 8:2); the sinful woman who anointed Jesus feet and washed them with her tears (Lk. 7:36-50); and Mary the sister of Lazarus and Martha of Bethany (Lk. 10:38-42, Jn. 11). Roche spoke about this tradition, adding that there s certainty in the fact that Mary Magdalene was part (Article continues on page 8) 7

8 SAINT CECILIA PARISH (Article continued from page 7) of the group of disciples of Jesus, she followed him to the foot of the cross and to the garden where his tomb was. In the rank of Church celebrations, feasts are the second category, marking some saints, like the apostles, and other important events in Christian history such as the Baptism of the Lord, the Conversion of St. Paul, the Transfiguration. A solemnity holds the highest rank among Church celebrations, and there are 24 in the annual liturgical calendar, including Christmas, Easter, Pentecost or Corpus Christi. Memorials most often honor and focus us on the life of a saint. Many observers celebrated the announcement. Jesuit Father James Martin, for instance, called it a recognition, long overdue, for the woman who first announced the Resurrection to the apostles. It reminds us of the supreme importance of women in Jesus s ministry, and in the Church s ministry today, he told Crux. In fact, between the time she encountered Christ at the tomb and when she proclaimed his Resurrection to them, Mary Magdalene was the Church on earth because only she understood the full meaning of Jesus s ministry. Any discussion of women in the Church must proceed from that, he said. Monsignor James Moroney, a former chief of staff for the U.S. bishops on liturgical matters, said it s a wonderful gift that Francis raised the celebration of the first witness to the resurrection to the rank of feast. Now the rector of Boston s St. John s Seminary, Moroney told Crux that to his knowledge, Saint Mary Magdalene is the first woman other than the Blessed Virgin whose liturgical celebration has been raised to the rank of a feast. Moroney said the move reminds him of Pope Benedict XVI s reflection on Mary Magdalene in 2006: A disciple of Christ is one who, in the experience of human weakness, has had the humility to ask for his help, has been healed by him and has set out following closely after him, becoming a witness of the power of his merciful love that is stronger than sin and death, the emeritus pope wrote.
