Saint Cecilia Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning Initiative BACK AGAIN BY POPULAR DEMAND (AND NEED) We begin our second year with delivery of Palliative Care and Advanced Care presentations for those who missed the first offerings or want to repeat a session for deeper understanding and discussion. Our Mission: to help prepare our community for the possibility of serious illness and end-of-life. Serious illness will almost certainly affect ourselves, our family members and/or our friends. Preparation can make decision-making in crisis so much easier. This is a multigenerational and intergenerational subject illness can strike anyone at any age. As such, we will continue to hold informational events to assist with advice and offer reflective conversational opportunities. We also plan to launch a Get a Health Care Proxy! campaign later this year. Anyone 18 years or older should have one. Calendar of Events: February 5: Overview of Palliative Care What is it, who should receive it, and when is right time to consider it. Tuesday night in the Parish Hall at 6:30. Medical doctors from our Palliative Care team Kathleen Doyle, MD and Andy Lawton, MD will be our presenters. Sign up at the next Mass or contact Amy Russo at aerusso2015@gmail.com. All are welcome! April 23: How to Think About and Share Your End of Life Preferences On this evening, you will share your ideas about what matters most to you, who you would like to be involved in your end of life care and how you might talk with your loved ones about it. May 17: Legal and Financial Considerations A former nurse and elder care attorney provides a perfect foundation for planning how to get your own affairs in order it s never too soon. Fall: Caring for the Family/Loved One Caregiver We hope to again bring Susan Rowlett from MGH to an evening in which we discuss the very real challenges facing caregivers and some practical suggestions on how to alleviate the pressures. Fall/Winter 2020: Spiritual Care in Palliative Care Matt Jacobson will guide the group through a discussion of our spirituality in light of our own or loved ones serious illnesses and how central it is to patient and family centered palliative care. The Palliative Care Assess and Advise Team remains available to anyone who needs help in light of a recent serious illness diagnosis or decline in health. If you need advice or help, please contact Jeanne Bruno at jbruno@stceciliaboston.org or Future Dreams: Our Palliative Care chaplain Matt Jacobson is planning a series of reflective conversational meetings for people to grow spiritually in the overall context of this serious illness/end-of-life subject matter.

Prayers & Occasions Our Deceased Bill Doran's sister died on January 29. Pray for the eternal repose of Anne Doran as well as for the consolation of Bill, his partner Phil Veysey and their family. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Our Sick Please pray for all our sick and for those who are in need of our prayer, especially Mary Pickering, Caeden Boyce, Stephanie Brown, Michael Connolly, John Thompson, Maureen Corcoran, Jill Bostder, Margo Bromfield, Mary Sue Capozza, Robert Moll, Little Fallon Papoy, and Patricia Finn. Black History Month February in the United States is celebrated as Black History Month. May we celebrate the promotion of positive values of our black leadership, through advocacy, through professional life, and through the arts. These values echo the main principles of Catholic Social Teaching and we pray that such values become respected by all. Let this also be a time to learn more about several notable black saints and clergy such as Saint Martin de Porres, Saint Josephine Bakhita, Mother Mary Lange, and Father John Augustine Tolton. Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish We are pleased to welcome the following new members of our parish who have recently registered: Ariana Lema- Driscoll of Brookline, Sabrina Bencik of Arlington, NJ, and Liam Quidore of Charlotte, NC. If you have not previously registered with the parish, there are forms in the narthex for this purpose or you can register online at Baptisms Today we celebrate baptism at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy for Charlotte Irene, daughter of Pete and Nicole Abernethy. At the 11:15 a.m. liturgy we celebrate baptism for Lila Louise, daughter of Ned debary and Katrina Chapman and Summer Jane, daughter of Michael and Missy Falvey. The Christian community welcomes you with great joy, Charlotte, Lila, and Summer! Thank You Last week s second collection was designated to support the Catholic Church in Latin America. Due to your generosity, we were able to collect $2,347 to help with various pastoral projects throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Thank you very much! Evening Prayer This Tuesday We will pray Evening Prayer this Tuesday, February 5 at 6:30 for the Memorial of Saint Agatha. All are welcome. Scout Sunday Observance We will commemorate Scout Sunday at Saint Cecilia on Sunday, February 10 and invite all scouts in the parish (both young men and women) to come to Mass in their uniforms. The Sacrament of the Sick "Is there anyone sick among you?" This question, found in the New Testament Letter of James, gives the response that the sick should call for the priests of the Church who are to pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Never hesitate to call the parish office to ask for prayer and the Sacrament of the Sick prior to surgery or when diagnosed with serious illness. This sacrament is not to be looked upon as the "Last Rites" but rather as a powerful instrument of God's healing presence. On February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Church observes World Day of the Sick. This celebration is a reminder to pray for all those who are sick and to recognize and honor those who work in healthcare and those who serve as caregivers. At Saint Cecilia we will observe this day next Sunday, February 10 at the nine-thirty and eleven-fifteen liturgies with a communal Anointing of the Sick and a blessing of healthcare workers and caregivers. If you would like to take part in this special celebration, be sure to attend one of these liturgies. First Reconciliation Yesterday, eighteen of our youngsters who are preparing for First Holy Communion celebrated their first reconciliation. Please keep these children in your prayer as they continue to prepare and look forward to being welcomed to the table of the Lord's Body and Blood this May. 5

Red Cloud Indian School On Frebruary 24, Father George Winzenburg, SJ will be coming to Mass to speak about the Red Cloud Indian School at the 9:30 and 11:15 Masses. For more information about Red Cloud see pages 15 & 16. World Day for Consecrated Life In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration occurs on the Sunday following the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2). Today we pray for all those who have consecrated their lives to Christ in the religious life by professing the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. We pray in a special way PRAY FOR VOCATIONS for Sr. Ann Marie Cook, SND of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur; Billy Biegler, SJ of the Society of Jesus; Bro. Jerry Dowsky, FMS of the Marist Brothers; Sr. Mary Ann Hinsdale, IHM of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and Bro. John Doyle, CFX of the Xaverian Brothers all members of our parish. We pray also for the Oblates of the Virgin Mary and the Society of Jesus, whose members assist us by being celebrants at our weekend liturgies. May all men and women in consecrated life continue to live their lives in accord with the gospel of Jesus Christ and respond with generosity of heart to the gift of their vocation. Dear Ann Faldetta and our Friends at Saint Cecilia Parish, This holiday season Project Hope was filled with the spirit of giving, thanks to your generous participation to our Winter Wonderland and holiday gift drive. You helped us provide books, toys, warm items and gift cards for over 500 children across all our programs. Beyond these much-appreciated gifts you brought us the gift of presence. You showed our families that there is force behind them to support them on their way out of poverty with dignity. We thank you for showering us with gifts, volunteer house, and cheers, and we wish you a healthy and happy new year! Christine Dixon, Executive Director Commonweal Readers Meeting Sunday, February 3 1:00 Classroom 4 The Commonweal Readers Group will be holding its monthly discussion in Classroom 4 on Sunday, February 3, at 1:00. This month we will be discussing the series of essays from the December 1 issue of Commonweal, entitled: Why We Came, Why We Left, Why We Stayed which assess the reasons prominent individuals give for their decisions to leave or remain in the Catholic Church. If you would like to listen in on the discussion, please join us in Classroom 4. If you would like to read the articles prior to the meeting, you can click on Faith and Film: "I am Not your Negro" Saturday, Febuary 9 6:00 p.m. Parish Hall "Powerful, personal, and soul-searing" are some of the words that accurately describe I Am Not Your Negro, a 2016 documentary about James Baldwin, based on his memories of Medgar Evans, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, his three close friends who were all assassinated. James Baldwin is as provocative today as he was decades ago. He calls us to confront the original sin of slavery and its persistent aftermath in the United States. I Am Not Your Negro is not to be missed especially since it will be followed by a short discussion. The unique benefit of the Faith and Film series is a chance to share your thoughts and ideas about the films that you have just seen. Please RSVP to judycastaldi@hotmail.com. 6

Parish Operating Statement We are pleased to present the Parish Operating Statement for the second quarter of the fiscal year, the six months ending December 31, Our Net Income for the quarter was -$83,754. This is primarily due to water damage incurred in our building this year as well as our special donations coming in less than budget. In reviewing our Operating Statement, you will note that the Miscellaneous Income account is significantly over budget that is driven by the flood damage mentioned above. Last August and November, the parish suffered water damage on the ground floor of the church. Our insurance covered the cost of a good deal, but not all, of the expenses. The Miscellaneous Income account includes the insurance reimbursement which was not budgeted. The costs that we have incurred for the repairs are included under Building Expenses which, as you can see, are also over budget by an even greater amount. There are two other items the Council would like to bring to your attention. First, Special Donations income is significantly under budget for the first half of the year. It is very difficult to predict when donations will be received. Due to a certain level of unpredictability of gifts and bequests, we do conservatively budget this item. Accordingly, we do anticipate that this situation will be corrected during the remainder of the year. Our personnel expenses have been lower than anticipated which has mitigated the impact of these lower donations. As you can see from our bottom line, during the first half of the year many positive and negative items have canceled each other out resulting in our actual results varying from budget by $25,000. We continue to believe that there is a good chance that we will end the year close to a break even. As always, we thank you for your support as we strive to further the mission of our parish. It is only through sustained and predictable giving that we can plan for the future of Saint Cecilia, so we continue to request that all parishioners first make sure they are formally registered in the parish and then consider joining our Offertory Commitment Program (OCP), which will assist us in this planning. Please contact Colleen Melaugh in the parish office for more information. PLEASE JOIN US! Confront Your Shadow on Groundhog's Day Have you retreated from opportunity because of fear or uncertainty? by Terry Helwig Fear not; I will help thee. Isaiah 41:13 Sunlight glistens on his whiskers as Mr. Groundhog cautiously pokes his head above his earthy burrow. He eases to his haunches, twitches his fuzzy ears and listens for signs of danger. Then horrors! He sees this big, black, spooky thing looming in front of him. Whoosh! He s gone. His shadow has sent him fleeing back to the safety of his den. This means, according to legend from Great Britain and Germany, that winter will last another six weeks. I, for one, like a sunny day especially in February. How silly to let a shadow spoil it. But, I wonder, how many times have I retreated from opportunity because I was frightened by a shadow called uncertainty or inadequacy? Perhaps my fear is as unfounded as the groundhog s. I have an idea! This Groundhog Day, despite the scary shadows in front of me, I m going to take one small step toward something I want to accomplish. I m going to accept that invitation to speak, even though I m nervous. How about you? Are you thinking about accepting a new job, going back to school or trying to break an old habit? Then why don t you make that phone call or write the letter that could change your life. After all, even the timid groundhog eventually raises his head, takes a whiff of clover and scurries from his hole. Dear Lord, this Groundhog Day, give me the courage to confront my shadows. 12

THE IMPORTANCE OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH TO CHRISTIANS When I was in the fifth grade, I became one of several children assigned to the class of Mrs. Janet Williams. Mrs. Williams was a remarkable teacher with a passion for history. She taught us about the founding of the United States, recited speeches given by men such as Patrick Henry, and made sure we could name at least ten American presidents (For the record: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Quincy Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren *Whew*). Unlike many teachers though, Mrs. Williams didn t gloss over America s divisive past. In particular, she wanted her students to know the history of the Civil Rights movement. Over time, we learned about extraordinary heroes like Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and The Little Rock Nine. To a child, these battles over racial equality felt like something out of the distant past, hundreds of year old. It never occurred to me that, as an elderly African American woman, Mrs. Williams must have witnessed these events firsthand. It also wasn t until much later that I discovered Civil Rights was not a settled matter, but an ongoing process. This February marks the beginning of Black History Month, and perhaps now more than ever it is important for Christians to step forward and observe it. [2018] was a turbulent year to say the least, and Black History Month offers us an opportunity to reflect and search out our better angels. Over at the DesiringGod blog, David Mathis remarks how important it is for believers to look back on the past, especially given the tumultuous changes facing our country today. He writes, As a white Christian in America, I have wrestled with what it means to orient on Black History Month. I remember well my unsympathetic heart as a teenager growing up in the South not only uninformed, but unrighteous leading me to roll my eyes and say, So, when s White History Month? Such is not the spirit of Christ, nor is it walking by 13 his Spirit to suspect the worst of non-blacks who rush to join the annual celebration. Nor is it Christian not in this nation or any other place on the planet to keep silent with our children about the realities of ethnicity in view of Christ. If we don t cast a positive vision for our children about the glories of God-designed ethnic diversity, we leave their inherent ethnocentrism to swell and take root. History is important. By looking at the past we chart the way for our future. The United States may have been founded on the principles of freedom and democracy, but we cannot ignore the darker chapters in our story. Black History Month is more than a celebration of the many accomplishments made by African-Americans, it s a reminder of where we as a country have been and where we hope to go. Mathis ends his post by stating, Black History Month isn t simply about ethnic diversity in general, but remembering the horrors of our shared history and celebrating the progress that has been made, in God s common kindness, and specifically the many successes of black Americans despite such a history. Christians honor this month, at least in part, because it helps us understand the awful plight of a people made in God s image, many of them fellow believers, and acknowledges God s goodness at work in remarkable achievements in and through a people who often have been treated with utter wickedness. Right now, there is a lot of anger in America. People are divided down political, religious, and even racial lines. Yet God has commanded us to put aside our prejudices and look on one another with His eyes. We are all the sons and daughters of God, and in Christ, we are a family (Galatians 3:28). So let us celebrate Black History Month by remembering what so many of our brothers and sisters have fought for, and work together to build a better future.

GROUNDHOG DAY A CATHOLIC TRADITION By KRISTIN BIRD Did you know that Groundhog Day is a direct descendant of one of the most ancient feasts of the Church? Known originally as the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, is an ancient celebration - most likely the oldest Marian feast in our church calendar. Falling exactly 40 days after Christmas, this feast commemorates Mary's obedience to the Mosaic law by submitting herself to the Temple for the ritual purification and the presentation of Jesus in the temple as commanded in Leviticus And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord: As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord: And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. Luke 2:22-24 The Church at Jerusalem observed the feast as early as the first half of the fourth century, and likely earlier. The feast celebrates the presentation of Christ in the temple at Jerusalem on the 40th day after His birth. CANDLEMAS: FEAST OF LIGHT Why the emphasis on candles and light? Because of St. Simeon's prophecy in Luke: Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel. Luke 2:29-32 On this day, Catholics traditionally brought their candles to the church to be blessed. The candles were then lit, and a procession took place through the darkened church while the Canticle of Simeon was sung. Because of this, the feast also became known as Candlemas. While the procession and blessing of the candles is not often performed in the United States today, Candlemas is still an important feast in many European countries. WHAT ABOUT THE GROUNDHOGS? The theme of light is an important one to this feast that falls at the end of the darkest days of winter. In the minds of our ancestors, the feast also marked the coming of Spring. Their understanding of the world was intricately connected to their understanding of faith. The celebration fo Christ as the "Light of Revelation to the Gentiles" was also the celebration of the darkness of winter giving way to the light and new life of Spring. As cultural traditions contintued to develop, they evolved into superstiions that claimed the weather (particularly the amount of light) on Candlemas could predict the coming of Spring. An overcast Candlemas meant that winter was coming to a close, whereas a sunlit Candlemas indicated six more weeks of winter. One of the German sayings for the season translates as "If Candlemas (Lichtmess) is mild and pure, winter will be long for sure (winter sein). In Ireland, Feb. 1 is the feast of St. Brigid. Irish and Scottish traditions say that, if badgers or snakes see their shadows on St. Brigid's Day, there will be more winter: The serpent will come from the hole, On the brown Day of Bríde [Brigid], Though there should be three feet of snow, On the flat surface of the ground. The lyrics of one folk song are: If Candlemas be fair and bright, Come, winter, have another flight. If Candlemas brings cold and rain, Go, winter, and come not again. As Candlemas traditions and supersitions evolved, many people embraced the legend that if the sun shone on the second day of February, an animal would see its shadow and there would be at least six more weeks of winter. Bears or badgers are watched in some European countries, but the German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania found an abundance of groundhogs and late in the 19th century a few residents in Punxsutawney began celebrating the groundhog as weather prophet. 14

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY So often the narrative of the Pine Ridge Reservation is that of deep and immense poverty, of incredible violence or sadness. But Red Cloud is a pocket of hope. I think that s exactly what we provide here, is hope for the future. And the tools in order for our students to open those doors. Maka Akan Najin Clifford 05, M.A., Columbia University, Red Cloud s Director of Curriculum and Assessment Red Cloud Indian School serves 600 Lakota children and families on the Pine Ridge Reservation in western South Dakota home to the Oglala Lakota Tribe. Extreme poverty is a reality on Pine Ridge, resulting from both historical oppression and systematic injustice. But today, Red Cloud s students and graduates are writing a new chapter in the reservation s history, one that is filled with hope and possibility. By providing a holistic education rooted in Lakota culture and Jesuit pedagogy, Red Cloud is fighting to change the narrative here on Pine Ridge. THE REALITIES WE FACE On the Pine Ridge Reservation: Between 80% and 95% of community members are unemployed or underemployed. The annual per capita income hovers around $9,000. More than 60% of children live in poverty. Life expectancy is approximately 67 years, by far the lowest in the United States. Diabetes, alcoholism and substance abuse, and suicide rates soar above national averages. Lack of quality housing often forces families to live in substandard conditions. THE FUTURE WE ARE CREATING Here at Red Cloud: Our graduation rate is close to 94%, compared to an average of just 70% for Native students nationwide. Almost 100% of our graduates pursue higher education after high school, and most are first generation college students. Our students have earned millions in college scholarships, including more Gates Millennium Scholarships than at any school of Red Cloud s size. Red Cloud graduates are pursuing degrees at colleges and universities across the country, from Yale to Creighton to the University of California. In the last 25 years, Red Cloud s college matriculation rate climbed by 70%. Our mission is to provide the kind of education that emboldens our students and families and allows communities on Pine Ridge to thrive. We invite you to be a part of that story. Learn more at

I RED CLOUD INDIAN SCHOOL I n the late 1800 s, Chief Red Cloud ( ), one of the most famous leaders of the Oglala Lakota people, became a fierce advocate for Jesuit education. More than 130 years ago, he recognized the Lakota were facing irrevocable economic and cultural loss. His wish was for the Jesuits to educate Lakota children to walk in two worlds so as to survive in a rapidly changing environment, while still sustaining their Lakota identity. He lobbied the U.S. government for over a decade to allow the Jesuits to build a school on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and in 1888, he succeeded. Here on South Dakota s Pine Ridge Reservation, we continue to honor that wish. Red Cloud Indian School focuses on three pillars that are essential to the character, faith, and long-term success of our students: academic excellence, spiritual formation, and Lakota cultural and spiritual studies. Administered in partnership by the Jesuits and the Lakota people, Red Cloud is creating transformative change on the reservation and fostering a new generation of Lakota leaders. EDUCATING MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT By offering a holistic approach to education, we address the complex needs of students who have experienced challenges no child should face and empower them to become leaders in the community, the nation, and the world. HONORING LAKOTA CULTURE By actively revitalizing the endangered Lakota language, teaching Lakota history and spirituality, and preserving a nationally-recognized collection of over 10,000 pieces of Lakota and other Native art, we work to deepen understanding of Lakota heritage and strengthen Native identity. MEETING COMMUNITY NEEDS Through a network of Catholic churches and community centers across the reservation, we serve more than 800 families to support healing and faith in celebration and in times of crisis. 1
