Shakespeare on the Common & Parish Picnic This evening we go to the Boston Common for our annual parish picnic and viewing of Shakespeare on the Common. This is always a fun evening. For more details see page 4 of the bulletin. Memorial of Saint Benedict Evening Prayer This Thursday, July 11, is the Memorial of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Benedict (c ) is the sixth century father of Western monasticism. We remember in prayer the Benedictine monks, nuns, and sisters who follow the Rule of Saint Benedict. In commemoration of this feast, we will celebrate sung vespers on Thursday evening at six-thirty. All are invited to attend. Dear Friends, If you heard my homily last Sunday at either the 9:30 or 11:15 liturgy, you'll recall my speaking about Battered Family Services, one of the agencies that some of the Young Neighbors in Action volunteered at during our recent week in Gallup, New Mexico. This remarkable agency provides a domestic violence shelter for women and children with counseling, referrals, employment assistance, and safe housing. Seeing over 3,500 purple ribbons covering the fence at Battered Family Services one ribbon for every report of domestic violence in McKinley County, NM over a twelve month period was shocking. One of our parishioners, who wishes to remain anonymous, has pledged to make a very generous gift of $10,000 to support the work of Battered Family Services and I would like to match that gift as a parish. Please consider making a gift sometime over the next few weekends to help women and children who have been the victims of abuse. Checks should be made out to Saint Cecilia Parish, but please write "Battered Families Gallup" on the memo line. We will receive donations via the mail or by the collection basket on July 7, 14, 21, & 28. If you prefer to make a cash donation, please see me or one of the members of the parish staff. 4 shakespeare on the common & parish picnic tonight! Shakespeare on the Common has become a Saint Cecilia tradition. If you have never joined us for this fun evening under the stars, you should consider it this year. The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is presenting the comedy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and we ll be going TONIGHT, Sunday, July 7. The play begins at seven o'clock on the Boston Common at the Parkman Bandstand. As we ve done in the past, we will be reserving space (thank you, Jenny Jones!) and will have a pot luck picnic beforehand at six o'clock. In the event of rain, we will go on the next clear day. For more information, visit drivers needed Each month parishioners have the opportunity to pick up donated meat, dairy products, and produce from a South Shore supermarket and baked goods from Whole Foods and deliver it to Catholic Charities' Haitian Multi- Service Center in Dorchester along with the packaged food items collected at Saint Cecilia. This vital ministry takes place at seven-thirty on Sunday mornings and can be completed in time to attend the nine-thirty parish liturgy. We need five cars each time we deliver to Catholic Charities. Here are our upcoming dates: July 14 and 28 August 4 and 18 online giving announcement Recently we have updated our Online Giving link from our website, to a new address. If you have questions, call Mark Donohoe at (617) ext a request from catholic Charities Sunset Point Camp, located in Hull, serves as a dream "vacation" for 300 children each summer. The camp was a donation to Catholic Charities in 1918 by the Knights of Columbus. The goal of the camp has always been to provide a free vacation for at-risk, low-income children from the Greater Boston area, without regard for their race, nationality, or religious affiliation. The programs at Sunset Point Camp are designed around building life skills, including teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, self-esteem, sportsmanship, and good health. Many of the children live with the harsh realities of poverty, violence, and homelessness, and a host of other challenges, but for one week in the summer, these children have the opportunity just to be children, enjoy the fresh sea air, and simply have fun. Sunset Point Camp is supervised by our friends at Catholic Charities' Yawkey Center in Dorchester. They have mentioned to us that they always need donations of sunscreen for the kids at the camp. So the next time you're at CVS or Walgreen's or your local supermarket, please consider picking up an extra tube of sunscreen and dropping it in the plastic bin identified for this purpose in the narthex. We have been told the higher the SPF number, the better. 4

5 Five Signs that You're in Good Spiritual Health By VINITA HAMPTON WRIGHT Of course there are WAY more than five signs that you re doing well spiritually. But I wanted to at least start the conversation. 1. You are not plagued by fear. A New Testament phrase says it plainly: perfect love casts out fear. When you have an ongoing sense of God s love for you, sooner or later you will let go of fear and hold on to trust. Of course this is a lifelong engagement. But fearfulness, especially chronic and obsessive fearfulness, points to an unhealthy perception of God and God s relationship with you. Even ordinary and reasonable fears the ones that motivate you to think clearly and use caution are tempered by the belief that God s love undergirds all of life. 2. You do not judge yourself or others harshly. A person who is healthy spiritually shows empathy and compassion. She does not see life in terms of us and them ; she understands that the black/white, good/bad distinctions we make can be arbitrary and flawed; she looks for ways to reconcile and increase understanding and cooperation. A spiritually healthy person is more interested in restoration than in punishment; she recognizes the difference because she is convinced of God s mercy and desire to help and heal us. This applies not only to how she views others but how she deals with her own life. 3. You experience and express a hopeful outlook. You see God s fingerprint on the lives of people everywhere. You see God in all things, as St. Ignatius of Loyola would put it. You practice gratitude and expect the best from people. You are not interested in predicting awful things to come. You look for redemption in hard situations because you believe that Divine love has filled life with purpose and possibility. 4. You can dwell comfortably with shadow and mystery. A spiritually healthy person does not have to have all the answers, does not have to be right all the time, can live with ambiguity, and appreciates the mysteries of faith and life. He is able to face his own weaknesses and sins, taking responsibility for his choices and seeking forgiveness when appropriate. He understands that the shadow side of life hurts and trials, mistakes and wounds can not only teach us wisdom but also lead us to the grace of God. 5. You approach life creatively and openly. You don t have to be in control because you trust that life can go many different ways and offer many new experiences and views. You are happy to learn and are willing to leave your comfort zone for the sake of your own growth and others good. You re not afraid of problems because you have confidence that solutions can be found. You understand God to be far beyond your or anyone else s descriptions, and that gives you a sense of freedom. This same freedom allows you to participate intentionally in spiritual practices and traditions because you recognize that God meets us where we are and works through faith communities, ordinary situations, and daily work. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the communal process through which non-baptized men and women become members of the Catholic Church. It is also suitable for those baptized in different faith traditions who are interested in becoming Catholic, or, for those who were baptized Catholic, but have yet to receive the sacraments of eucharist and confirmation. Faith Formation for Children To register your child for our Faith Formation Program, please contact Scott MacDonald in the parish office. Marriage Couples who wish to prepare for marriage should contact Mark Donohoe in the parish office at least six months in advance. Care of the Sick To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion to be brought to those unable to attend the Sunday celebration, or for Viaticum for the Dying (Holy Communion for those in danger of death), please contact the parish office. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. Order of Christian Funerals The parish is prepared to celebrate the Vigil (wake) in the church. Please contact the parish office for more information. Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Team The CAP Team is responsible for training all parish staff and volunteers in mandated reporting laws and the Protecting God s Children program (VIRTUS). They also provide consultation and support to anyone in the parish who has concerns about reporting child abuse and neglect. The Archdiocese of Boston has in place a vigorous program to protect children from harm and to educate its ministers and faithful about the nature of abuse, with a goal of increasing knowledge, creating a safe environment for children, and recognizing and reporting potentially dangerous situations. Access for the Disabled The church is accessible by elevator. Sunday Parking Reduced-rate parking is available on Sundays at the Prudential Center parking garage and at the Hilton Boston Back Bay; Sunday parking is also available at LAZ Parking (53 Belvidere Street maximum of three hours).
