2 Message Notes Completely Devoted to God through Prayer and Fas ng Isaiah 58:1 14 COMPLETELY DEVOTED TO GOD THROUGH PRAYER AND FASTING They devoted themselves to prayer (Acts 2:42) While they were worshiping the Lord and fas ng, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. So a er they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (Acts 13:2 3) Chris an fas ng: Voluntarily going without some good gi from God in order to test the desires of our hearts, and to grow our desire and hunger for God above all else. DOWN: FASTING AND PRAYER HUMBLES US BY REVEALING OUR HEARTS Why have we fasted, they say, and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not no ced? Yet on the day of your fas ng, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fas ng ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. (Isaiah 58:3 4) OUT: FASTING AND PRAYER HUMBLES US TO SERVE OTHERS IN LOVE Is not this the kind of fas ng I have chosen: to loose the chains of injus ce and un e the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? (Isaiah 58:6 7) UP: FASTING AND PRAYER GROWS OUR HUNGER FOR GOD The LORD will sa sfy your needs in a sun scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob. (Isaiah 58:11, 14) Welcome to Beloit First Chris an Church (BFCC) We are glad you re here and pray you will experience God s presence and love. We believe accep ng and living in a right, loving rela onship with God through Jesus Christ is the most important decision you will ever make. The Bible tells us: And this is what God has tes fied: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11 12) Jesus Christ preached the Gospel (good news) of his coming and called everyone to: Repent from our sin that is, reject and turn away from our old desires and ac ons of self righteousness and self indulgence that separate us from God and the life He has for us. To repent is to admit we need a Savior and to look to Him in trust. Believe that Jesus sacrificial death on the cross offers full forgiveness for our sins, and convincingly demonstrates God s deep, ongoing love for us. Follow Jesus, who rose from the dead and lives forever. Through the Holy Spirit, the life of Christ in us brings new life, a transforma on of our desires, and the power to live obediently to God s Word for all who put their faith and trust in him. Gree ngs from Tanzania! Very difficult things are going on right now. There are tribal clashes going on in many of the areas were we have church planters living. I was going to visit Karoyo, just north of Tanga, but it was too dangerous to reach. Some armed men, possibly Al Shabab, or other gangsters, were engaging police and Tanzanian army in a firefight. I was in contact with our church planters, who said they were hearing gunshots all night! They con nue to be a witness to their Muslim neighbors of the love of Christ. There are tribal clashes in Kipamba, Loliondo and Maware. These areas are not safe for us to go into for now. Thankfully we have church planters who live there and are commi ed to bring the light into the darkness! Right now I'm in Morogoro. Maware is where our church plant is located, along with the two church planter couples, Solomon and Sarah, and Philemon and Deborah, and their children. The tribal figh ng is between farmers and herders. In Morogoro 50 Maasai were killed. In another area, 60 people were killed. In Maware it is dangerous, but so far there is no figh ng. About 100 people have migrated there a er their houses were burned down. They have nothing but the clothes on their back (and being Maasai, that is not much!). They are sleeping on the ground in the bush. They are being eaten up by mosquitoes. The local Maasai are sharing food that they had stored, but their own supplies are running low. Solomon and Philemon and their families had considered moving out for a while, but the community asked them to stay. They were told that if the church planters leave there would be a slaughter. By their very presence our church planters are keeping peace, while pu ng their lives on the line. We are contac ng some aid organiza ons to get funds to help these displaced people. Please be in prayer for these church planters who stand in a dangerous place to represent you and share the Gospel in a very dark me. I am so proud of these church planters and their strength, faith and courage! Judy is in New Zealand to be with Kendra as she and Jeremy await the arrival of their second child. The baby is now overdue, so it could be any me! I will go to New Zealand mid March for 2 weeks to meet our new grandson! We so much appreciate your support over the many years we have ministered in East Africa. Blessings in the name of Jesus! Gary and Judy Woods 6
