2 Message Notes Genesis 43:1 14 The Risk of Faith FAITH, RISK, AND FEAR Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1) FAITH IS OFTEN PROMPTED BY DESPERATION Now the famine was s ll severe in the land. So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, Go back and buy us a li le more food May God Almighty grant you mercy (Genesis 43:1 2, 14) FAITH FLOWS FROM CHARACTER TRANSFORMATION Then Judah said to Israel his father, Send the boy along with me I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. The Bible tells us: And this is what God has tes fied: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11 12) Jesus Christ preached the Gospel (good news) of his coming and called everyone to: Repent from our sin that is, reject and turn away from our old desires and ac ons of self righteousness and self indulgence that separate us from God and the life He has for us. To repent is to admit we need a Savior and to look to Him in trust. Believe that Jesus sacrificial death on the cross offers full forgiveness for our sins, and convincingly demonstrates God s deep, ongoing love for us. Follow Jesus, who rose from the dead and lives forever. Through the Holy Spirit, the life of Christ in us brings new life, a transforma on of our desires, and the power to live obediently to God s Word for all who put their faith and trust in him. 3 OCTOBER 16, 23, and 30 Youth Fundraiser: The youth will be fundraising by selling evergreen wreaths, sprays, garlands, candlelit centerpieces and table top trees. They are all nicely decorated with pine cones and bows. A small light set can also be purchased for an extra $3.75 to decorate their purchase. An EZ Hangar can be purchased for $1.75 that hangs over the top of the door to hang the wreath. These will be sold in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 16, October 23, and October 30. The shipment should arrive by November 19 and purchases will be available to pick up at the church, or we can deliver in the Beloit area. For and extra $ a person can have an item sent directly to friends and family in other ci es or states. They will be delivered directly to homes by Fed Ex. The money will be used to help defray the costs of the CIY Move youth conference that is in Durango, CO on June 26 30, Thanks so much for your support! OCTOBER 16 New Adult Sunday School class begins: The freedom of religious expression was chief among America's founding principles. However, today there is an unprecedented effort to deny this most basic of human rights in almost every area of American life. A Time to Speak is a DVD from the American Family Associa on highligh ng the urgent need for Chris ans to pray, speak out and vote. It's a clarion call for the Church to break the silence and preserve this freedom for the coming genera ons. Some of the folks interviewed for this special study include Mike Huckabee, Russell Moore, Tony Perkins, Alveda King, Eric Metaxas and many more Chris an leaders. This study is led by Pastor Dave ( ) and Linda Mealiff ( ). OCTOBER 19 Reminder to FUSION students and parents: The Todd Becker Founda on event at Beloit Jr./Sr. High School will take the place of our regularly scheduled FUSION gathering on Wednesday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. Students are encouraged to a end this event, and many of our FUSION adult volunteer leaders will be present at the school as well. 5 OCTOBER 19 and 20 Beloit Community Blood Drive at NCK Wellness Center: Wednesday, October 19 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Thursday October 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., come and give the gi of life through this Red Cross blood drive. OCTOBER 20 Hearts in Healing a monthly grief support group for those who have lost a child: Heart Choices offers this monthly grief support group for all who have lost a child through death or miscarriage. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at the HeBrews Cafe (upstairs), 120 S. Market St. in Glen Elder at 7 p.m. For more informa on, please contact Heart Choices at or Rachel at We encourage those who are in the grief process to a end, even if it may mean a bit of travel. A endees can expect confiden ality and compassion from others who are also experiencing the pain of loss. OCTOBER 25 New women s small group on Tuesdays at 12 noon: Watch Your Mouth Understanding the Power of the Tongue. All women are invited to join a new small group that will begin Tuesday, October 25 at 12 noon, led by Sherry Angell. Please call the church office if you are interested so we may get the correct number of study books. This group will meet in the South Classroom of the Family Life Center. NOVEMBER 7 Ques ons and Conversa on This informal me of open discussion is led by Pastor Cliff and takes place in Fellowship Hall on the first Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m. This is not a pre programmed study, but rather a place where your ques ons become the topic of conversa on in a safe, accep ng atmosphere. This group is open to everyone. Bring your ques oning coworker or friend! 6

4 NOVEMBER Bring your filled Opera on Christmas Child boxes to the church: You may pick up one or more boxes at the table in Fellowship Hall, along with a pamphlet that gives instruc ons on appropriate items to include. Bring your box back to the church during collec on week, November Boxes are delivered to underprivileged children in over 150 countries to share the hope of Jesus Christ. Each and every shoebox gi, given in Jesus' Name, opens doors for boys and girls and their families to hear the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a great service opportunity for families or individuals. DECEMBER 4 Potluck meal for everyone, followed by a Congrega onal Vo ng Mee ng: We hope you will plan to come and share a potluck meal at 12 noon on December 4. Just bring a dish to share, as drinks and dinnerware will be provided. A er the meal we will have the Congrega onal Vo ng mee ng for members to vote on the 2017 nominees for ministry posi ons, and the proposed 2017 church budget. DECEMBER 11 Sunday School Christmas Program: Calling all children! We are missing kids in Sunday School and hoping all will return faithfully as we have begun to work on our December 11 Sunday School Christmas Program. With this just weeks away, we need the kids to arrive Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. sharp to start prac cing for our celebra on of baby King Jesus. You won t want your kids to miss this opportunity! Sunday School runs every Sunday morning between the two worship services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. There are classes for every age. Thank you for your kind words and con nued prayers at the me of Ma hew s accident and death. Support of family and friends are deeply appreciated. 5 Missionaries of the Month: Russ & E a Bauck Russ and E a Bauck work with OC Interna onal in the Philippines. Here is the latest correspondence from Russ and E a: It s hard for me to accept that this is true. But here s what is happening in places nearby us, and also all over the Philippines. The point person on our team for training church planters has reported some amazing results over the last eight months. In one province, 243 new Outreach Bible Studies were started by just a few people invi ng contacts for Bible study. 243 new outreach Bible studies are mee ng weekly a er only eight months! In the strategy u lized, 25 of these new believers are now also star ng to lead their own Outreach Bible Studies. Altogether 1,239 new believers are mee ng weekly in Outreach Bible Studies and that is in just one part of Batangas province, a er only 8 months of prayer, teaching, and training people to be Christ s disciples! The ini al training goes on for another 2 or 3 months, during which me leadership is developed to grow networks of new Outreach Bible Study (OBS) leaders, who will right away start new OBS s. The cycle con nues to grow and expand. This strategy is being used by OC here in the Philippines, but also in Thailand and several other South East Asian countries. The strategy is not our own, but rather what we and many others have learned from a Chinese American who has seen thousands upon thousands of new churches started. This strategy has come to be known as T4T (see h p://goo.gl/jiyzoh) and is u lized worldwide. A er what I have wri en above, I guess I am now a believer in the T4T approach for disciple making! In all seriousness, I don t really want to make this out as another adver sement for success in ministry. Instead, what has struck me personally is the way T4T focuses on discipleship in a simple yet powerful way that is similar to the way that Jesus made disciples. Please pray for mul plied Outreach Bible Studies through our teams in the Philippines and around South East Asia.
