Founded in 1995 by two Jesuit priests, the Ignatian Volunteer Corps offers men and women, age 50 and older, the opportunity to engage in direct, hands-on service with the materially poor while growing in their Christian faith through personal and shared reflection. IVC members commit to 600 hours of service per year (2 days/week, Sept.-June) and participate in a comprehensive spiritual formation program in the Jesuit tradition including monthly community meetings, individual spiritual reflection, and retreat experiences. Currently, 60 IVC Chicago members are serving throughout Cook, Lake and DuPage counties in a wide variety of volunteer settings. 8 8 Crusader Chronicles May 21, 2017 MAY CROWNING On May 4 th, our school had a special Mass where we honored our Blessed Mother Mary. During the Mass, our 8 th graders gathered around Mary at the front of church and watched as fellow 8 th grader Hanna P. placed a crown of flowers on her head. The 8 th graders also received their school ribbons. Many of them have been wearing these every day to school since receiving them. All of them will wear them at graduation on Thursday, May 25 th. SLOPPY JOE DAY The 8 th graders and their parents put on the annual Sloppy Joe Day festivities this week. There were lots of treats and raffle tickets to buy during the week and many carnival-like games to be played on Friday. Plus, of course, there were SLOPPY JOES to be enjoyed for lunch on Friday. Thank you to the 8 th graders and their parents for all that you did this week to make the week enjoyable and memorable for all of us. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION On April 29 th, our second graders took part in their very first Holy Communion. This special sacrament was shared with classmates, siblings, parents, grandparents, and family friends. On Monday, May 1 st, our school honored the second graders with a special Mass to celebrate the blessed occasion. PRE-KINDERGARTEN OPENINGS Our pre-kindergarten program was overhauled this past summer to align it more to our regular school day and year. Our Pre-K 3 and 4-year old programs have diocesan approved curriculum that sets us apart from other pre-kindergarten programs in the area. Both classes have small teacher and teacher aide to student ratios. At this time, we still have a few openings in our three-year old program. There are a couple of different options to choose from: ½ days on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, 1/2 day for Monday through Friday, or full day for Monday through Friday. School starts at 8:15 for our pre-k students and ends at 11:10 for our ½ day students and 3:05 for our full day students. 9 9 TECHNOLOGY PLANNING This coming school year, Our Lady of Peace is planning to incorporate more technology into our lessons to enhance the learning that takes place in and out of the classroom. We will be more than doubling the number of ipads that we have for our Kindergarten through third graders to share. We will also be purchasing a laptop for all our students in the fourth through eighth grades. These laptops will travel with the students as they are to be used in the classrooms and at home. SCHOOL TOURS We give school tours on a regular basis and we would love for you to see our school. We have a lot to offer all of the children, plus we have a lot to offer the parents as well. All school tours are given by our school principal, Mr. Wilkinson. Call the school office to set up a time to tour our beautiful school. TUITION TRANSFER GRANT Our Lady of Peace School offers the Tuition Transfer Grant to any child entering 1 st 7 th grades and transferring from any non-area Catholic school. The grant is for $1,000 off of tuition the first school year and $500 off of the second year. Please call the school office (630) ) for more information. GARAGE SALE The annual garage sale is scheduled to take place on June 24 th. Thank you to Tony and Tammy Perna who have agreed to run the garage sale this year. They have just begun to put a team together. If you are interested in helping out please contact Tony or Tammy. The garage sale is a great way to do one of two things, either get rid of things in your closets, basements, and/or garages to help our school or search out great deals at the sale and help the school. This is our first fundraiser of the new school year and typically, it is our third largest fundraiser each year. Our Lady of Peace Parish is blessed to have catechists who are in relationship with Jesus and have a calling to share their faith and knowledge with you and your children. They prepare lessons and activities, engage the children in prayer and discussion, reflect with them on Scripture and model the Catholic faith to them. This program could not take place without them. Due to higher than normal attrition, OLP is in need of Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist at all of its Masses, with the exception of the 7:00AM Mass. However, of special need are Eucharistic Ministers for the 8:30AM, 10:15AM and 6:30PM Masses on Sunday, the Masses for which the Eucharist is offered under both species.
