2 2 From Father Walter s desk Don t Limit Yourself Everyone knows, or should know, that people can efface challenges in their lives. Everything can go well for a long period of time. Goals sought after are being achieved. No problems at all! And then something happens. A death in the family occurs. A job might get lost. Perhaps some sort of marital infidelity not foreseen now surfaces. A recent visit to the doctor reveals a disease that could be threatening if not treated immediately. In your opinion, what else could happen in one s life? Fill in the blanks. In any and all of these life experiences, from the perspective of the Church is extremely helpful and healing if you realize that God is with you. Your realization completes the equation. On one hand, God is with you and always will be. The important matter now is the depth of your own awareness of this reality. In any of the above threatening experiences, you need to be strong. You need to make the best decisions to move forward. These next steps can more easily happen if you know that God is holding your hand and you are holding His hand back. And you hold His hand back by praying and in your prayer you ask for advice. Your prayer is best if you ask God humbly to help you evaluate your current state of mind, along with your thinking and the decisions you possibly might have made thus far. Are they in order? You will want God to help you here too! For centuries, the Church helped people by teaching them to pray. And by the Church teaching them to pray, simply trained their minds to turn to Him in times of trouble. Let s look at a few examples. Whether at Mass or in saying the Rosary or in reciting any written prayer, one notices that one gets distracted. And then something tugs our minds back to what we were doing. A priest might engage in consecration proper, raising now the Host and then the Chalice. I might pray the Rosary and although I get distracted, I snap out of it, and place my mind back on what I want to do, that is, to think about God. This process is true throughout whatever prayer form I am engaged in and it is this very process that is the training! This seesaw movement of going from God to distraction to back to God is it! Now if I engage in this process daily I will find that when the time comes and I am challenged by something in life, I can immediately turn my mind to God and invite God to walk with me in whatever danger I face. The key is not to lose oneself in fear, depression, and in worry about the situation. Rather than getting lost in such negativity, I can find myself better yet in God. This is a basic meaning of the Gospel story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The two men were walking along and Jesus appears to them and walks with them. But they do not recognize Him. Remember? But they invite Him home to eat with them, and in His act of breaking bread, they do recognize Him. The key here is that they invite Him home with them. Simply walking with Him for a brief time does not help them recognize Him. Only when they invite Him in to their home, and eat with Him, a very intimate, family act, that they succeed in recognizing Him. The moral? Don t limit yourselves to walking with Jesus for a brief time for one hour every Sunday. Invite Him to your homes too. Pray before meals and invite Him to eat with you. By being consistent in this way, you will recognize Him by the sheer act of training your minds in prayer by not surrendering to one s own thoughts, daydreams, and distractions but to learn instead to turn to Him. So trained, you will turn to Him immediately in all life s challenges and in this way recognize Him throughout one s life! Blessings! Peace, Fr. Walt

It is to assist: ~ Our Lady of Peace Parishioners ~ A person or family who faces a significant health issue or other crisis ~ The person or family does not have other assistance in the area Our Weekend Meals Program has been in place for almost 20 years and has supported parishioners who are not able to get to the store or prepare their own meals. Meals are provided on Saturday afternoon and are enough to have a meal on both Saturday and Sunday. The meals are made and delivered on Saturdays by parishioners who coordinate the meal and the timing of the delivery the week before. 5 5 Preparing Oneself For Divine Mercy Sunday Divine Mercy Sunday ~ Sunday, April 8, 2018 ~ Plenary Indulgence Part I ~ A plenary indulgence is the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sin. Pope St. John Paul, II established that Divine Mercy Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence. In order to obtain a plenary indulgence (which can only be received once a day), normal conditions must be followed. Normal conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence: ~It is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. ~Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin. ~Have sacramentally confessed their sins. celebrate/greatgrace/graces.php ~Receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required) ~Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. 8 8 Crusader Chronicles March 4, 2018 PRE-KINDERGARTEN/KINDERGARTEN OPEN HOUSE We had such a great turn out to our last open house for the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten that we have decided to hold a second one. The next Pre-K and Kindergarten Open House will take place on Thursday, March, 15 th (6-7 PM).The response for the pre-k 3 year and 4 year old programs as well as the kindergarten class have been very positive. There are a few spots open for each of the options for each pre-k group. Come hear about our wonderful programs and meet the teachers. LIVING STATIONS The sixth graders will present the Living Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 16 th beginning at 7 PM. Each year, Mrs. Pakel and the sixth grade students do a fantastic job of putting this performance together. We would like to invite the parish to join us for this special evening. SCHOOL REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN Registration for the school year is now open. For returning families, we ask that you have your registration paper work done through School Speak by March 2 nd. The registration fee for current families that register by March 2 nd will be $50. If current families register after March 2 nd, the registration fee will be $150. For all new families the registration fee will be $50. It is highly recommended that if you are interested in Pre-Kindergarten for three or four year olds that you register as early as possible because these positions tend to fill up quickly. SCHOOL TOURS If you would like to set up a school tour, please call the school office ( ). We will work around your schedule to come up with a convenient day and time. We can also schedule a shadow day for your child to see that OLP is a great school and a great fit for him/her. TOP TEN THINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PLANNING FOR COLLEGE Last year Partners for Achievement presented to our school families things that families will need to know as their children prepare for college. We are having them back this spring and we would like to invite the parish to attend. The presentation will take place on April 16 th beginning at 7:00 PM. You can register for the presentation at: BOX TOPS Our Lady of Peace School collects Box Tops and turns them in for cash. We earn ten cents per box top. We would love if you would help us by cutting out box tops and either bringing them to school or dropping them off into the red Campbell s box in the church vestibule. Without your donations, we could not provide food for the needy. We receive many thank you s from the needy for how we have helped them throughout the years. It truly gives us a warm sense of purpose and accomplishment, that we have helped someone in need. As you are aware, we have supplied the needy weekly with fresh fruits and vegetables. We also have purchased milk for the needy. They are so pleased to receive these items. Several local vendors generously supply our food pantry with baked goods, grocery items, bread, bagels, and fresh vegetables. Please visit and support these local businesses when possible and help us thank them for their continued support. PANERA BREAD- 75th & Lemont Rd. Cemetery Seasonal Workers Needed The Diocese of Joliet Cemetery Office is seeking to hire multiple Seasonal Cemetery workers. These positions consist of the performance of seasonal work in the cemetery for the maximum period as outlined in the union contract (mid- March to October 31 st ). A valid Illinois drivers license is required. Must be willing and able to perform tasks as outlined in the Cemetery Seasonal job description. Diocesan Cemetery reporting base at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kankakee; Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Joliet; or Assumption Cemetery, Wheaton. Normal 40 hour workweek. Union membership is required.
