2 2 From Father Walter s desk Choosing Choosing is a power that we will always have - all of us. Another way of phrasing this is to simply say that all of us have free will. Nobody forces me to sin, or to do something that creates a distance between me and God. I choose it. In past homily, I even suggested that nobody even forces me to stop at a red light in traffic. It may seem that way since I always do. However, the truth is that people run red lights all the time, even though they know it is a law that they must stop. So, in truth, I choose to stop at a red light. Since I choose sin, an experience that would make me feel bad, I can choose to do well, and experience that would enable me to feel better, both toward myself as well as the people around me. How does this work? It can be understood to work according to an image that I also shared in a past homily, which is that of a car. This image, just so you know, comes from Dr. William Glasser, the founder of a system of therapy entitled, reality Therapy/ Choice Theory. The image is unpacked in this manner. Imagine a car, just the body of a car, naturally with four wheels. The front wheels steer the car and the back wheels follow. The back wheels are entitled, feelings and physiology. The only nuance is that when reflecting on the front wheels, just remember that we are talking about Positive Doing and Positive Thinking. Continuing with this imagery now, Glasser teaches that if one feels bad, then changing what one thinks or what one does, in a positive way, would change how one feels for after all, back wheels follow front wheels. He feels that this message is important for in his experience with therapy, people who feel bad, due to negative thinking or by doing the wrong things, end up continuing to think the same thoughts and continue to do the wrong things. The ongoing bad thinking leaves them feeling both powerless and helpless. Someone has to help them consider different options. And perhaps that is where we come in as Christians. A Main reason why people find it difficult to change is because they do not really accept the fact that they can. They do not own the fact that they have such inner power. One can see this lack of ownership in how often people blame someone else for their negative feelings. The reason, in other words, why I may feel bad is because did it to me, and here you can just fill in the blanks. Along with this reaction is the concomitant one of trying to change others. I will change you! What do we end up with? Glasser lists out what he calls the seven deadly habits and they are: criticizing, blaming, complaining, nagging, threatening, punishing, and rewarding control. These habits are largely biblical, but then again, so are Glasser s seven caring habits...supporting, encouraging, listening, accepting, trusting, respecting, and negotiating differences. We move into the deadly habits when we do not own our internal power to change. When I become open to a conversion experience, which means literally a change of mind. I inevitably realize that I can change myself and not others. I realize that real change comes from within, and I can in fact change. Goodness! With this model, I have to also realize that I am even choosing the bad feeling that I may have now. Nobody is doing this to me. I m doing this to me. A realization like this opens me up to real loving behaviors, and once there, I find Christ. Blessings, Fr. Walter

But fear not, because you are not alone. I am always supporting you, so lean on Me as you struggle, fearing nothing. Take the vessel of trust and draw from the fountain of life- for yourself, but also for other souls, especially such as are distrustful of My goodness. (Diary, 1488) From the Catechism of the Catholic Church Hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Sprit who has been given to us. (Rom 5:5) Prayer, formed by the liturgical life, draws everything into the love by which we are loved in Christ and which enables us to respond to him by loving as he loved us. Love is the source of prayer; whoever draws from it reaches the summit of prayer. (CCC #2658)

7 7 The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation History Come and join this exciting, enriching Bible study program by Jeff Cavins, and leave knowing who God is, who you are and your place in Salvation history. This program fills in all the gaps of Old Testament catechesis you may have experienced in your life and ends with an emphasis on the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. The stories and characters will really come alive over the course of 23 weekly sessions. Only 15 minutes a day of scripture reading! It is a DVD-based instructional program with assigned reading and penetrating study guide questions. Small groups discuss the assigned homework and provide keen insights and fellowship. If you miss a week, simply make use of the digital-video access that comes with the online registration. Pope Emeritus Benedict said, You need to know what you believe. Yes, you need to be more deeply rooted in the faith than the generation of your parents so that you can engage the challenges and temptations of this time with strength and determination. Is the Holy Spirit calling you? 8 8 Crusader Chronicles August 20, 2017 START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR Our Lady of Peace School got off to a fantastic start to the school year this past week. The 1 st grade through 8 th graders started out on Tuesday, August 22 nd with a half day of school. Their first full day of school was on Wednesday. The Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes started on Wednesday, August 23 rd. PARENT MEETINGS/GET TOGETHERS This year our school has incorporated many different opportunities for our children and/ or parents to come to school to get to know our teachers, administration, and each other. Our Back to School Bash was moved this year to the week before school to make things easier on the children and their parents. The families were able to bring school supplies to the Back to School Bash for the first time ever. Both of these changes came about through the collaboration between the school and our parents. We have gotten a ton of positive feedback on both decisions. Our Pre-Kindergarten children and parents came together on Monday, August 21 st. The parents met with the teachers and the principal to talk about our school and their classrooms, while the children played in the gym with one of the pre-k aides and some of our 8 th graders. After the meeting, the parents and teachers came down and freeze pops were shared with everyone. Our Kindergarteners and their parents met with Mrs. Flynn for orientation on Tuesday, August 22 nd. Everyone met with Mrs. Flynn initially and then the children stayed in the classroom and the parents came to the gym to meet with Mr. Wilkinson and some of our parent volunteers. This year, our school is having its first ever Parent Information Night at Chuck s restaurant to talk about all of the wonderful things that take place at our school. There are so many activities and events that are available to our children and their families that we wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of these things. I know that the one area that I stress to all parents that I give tours to is that we have so many of our parents and grandparents that give so much of their time and themselves. This is what I believe sets our school above and beyond all other schools.

9 9 PRE-KINDERGARTEN Our Pre-Kindergarten program continues to grow each year. Two years ago, our Pre-K program had one classroom, last year we had two classrooms, and this year we have added a third classroom. Not only do we wish to be the biggest Pre-K program in the Diocese of Joliet, but we also strive to be the best. By adding classrooms and great teachers, we will make our program better each year. This year, we will have one Pre-Kindergarten three year old classroom with many half day and full day options and two Pre-Kindergarten four year old classrooms. One of the four year old classrooms will be for our half day students and the other will be for our full day students. REGISTRATION and SCHOOL TOURS If you are interested in registering for Pre-Kindergarten or any other grade level, please contact the school office ( ). Also, if you are interested in getting a tour of our school please call the school office to set up a tour. GOLF OUTING The golf outing date is fast approaching and we have a couple of foursomes still available. Each golfer is charged $125 or $500 per foursome. If you are unable to get four golfers, please feel free to sign up as an individual. We will put you with others. There are also sponsorship opportunities available as well. If you do not want to golf, but would like to have dinner and drinks after golf you could do that as well for $40 each. Forms are in the school office if you are interested in joining us for this special day. All money raised will go towards purchasing new uniforms for our sports teams.
