LEOMINSTER, MA BLESSED AMONG US St. Kateri Tekakwitha "Lily of the Mohawks" ( ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Monday, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Kateri. In October of 2012, the year Kateri was canonized a saint, we dedicated our new park behind the Church in her honor. It is a quiet place for prayer and contemplation right here in our backyard. St. Kateri was born in 1656 near present-day Auriesville, New York. Her mother, a captured Algonquin, was a Christian, while her father, a Mohawk chief, viewed the new religion with deep suspicion. Both parents died from smallpox when Kateri was four. Her own scarred face showed the marks of the disease, which also darkened her vision, causing her to stumble in the light. As a result her people called her Tekakwitha, which means "the one who walks groping her way. When a Jesuit missionary arrived in her village in 1674 she requested baptism. She was given the name Kateri - a Mohawk version of Katherine. Kateri's conversion caused distress in her community, so much so that her confessor feared for her safety and urged her to flee. Under cover of darkness she set off from her village by foot and traveled two hundred miles to a Christian mission near Montreal, where on Christmas Day, 1677, she made her First Communion. Though free to practice her faith, she was still forced to grope her way in a world that supplied no clear models. She resisted the idea of marriage. She proposed founding a convent, an idea that was quickly dismissed. Nevertheless, in 1679 she made a public vow of chastity - as far as she got with her dream of religious life. Soon after she fell ill and died on April 17, 1680, at the age of twenty-three. She was beatified in 1980 and canonized in Saint Kateri, pray for us that we may see clearly the face of God in one another as we journey through life. Thank you for your generosity towards Fr. Marc Fallon s appeal to benefit the works of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Fr. Fallon was here last weekend for the Annual Propagation of the Faith Mission Appeal. A donation of $2,086 was raised in our parish and will be directly sent to support the missionary and apostolic works they are involved in. We will be celebrating Saint Mary Magdalene, the Apostle to the Apostles, with a paraliturgical prayer service to honor the contributions that women have made throughout the centuries to the church. Please join us Tuesday, July 22 nd, at 7PM.
3 RELIGIOUS ED PROGRAM Please check the EVENTS OF THE WEEK in this bulletin for Religious Ed class schedules. Thank you to all those who supported our Car Wash to benefit the teens going to the Steubenville Youth Conference on July at the University of Rhode Island. We raised $565 which goes towards offsetting the cost of the $235 per teen and adult registration fee. Religious Ed Registrations Are Closing! Because of our growing numbers, we are afraid that we can not guarantee class space for children who register late. Families who registered before June 4 may request changes to your choice of day up until the first week in August, should your schedule change, however those changes are also made on a first-come-first-served basis. If you have not yet registered, PLEASE REGISTER THIS WEEK, and we will do our best to find a place for your child. Payments can be sent in when you are able. We ask that you invite friends, whose children are just coming into first grade, to register now. All Registered families will receive a calendar in early September with dates for the entire school year, and labels which inform you of the date and time of each child s class. Classes for Kindergarten through Grade 8 start the first week in October. High School Students will receive a letter in August with dates for all classes, which are on Sundays, and start in September. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Have You Been Away From Church For A While? Welcome Back! We do have classes available on all grade levels for children who have had little or no formal religious education and who would like to get caught up. If you would like more information, we would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Now is the time to be welcomed! Please call Donations Are Welcome: As always we use the summer months to stock up on office supplies: dry erase markers & erasers, pencils, pens, Crayola markers, staplers, large scissors, scotch tape, glue sticks, and 2 pocket folders (in all of one color). We would also like to add to our supply of inexpensive rosaries and small (1-4 ) pocket crosses. If you discover a source for free or low-price supplies, please contact us so we can take advantage of anything that might prove to be of use. 15 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Our next and last fundraiser will be a bake sale after all Masses this weekend. If you are unable to be here and would still like to donate or would like to support us with your baked goods, please call Lisa at the Religious Education Office. Summer Co-ed Volleyball League: In an awesome display of teamwork, OLL won two out of three games on July 30 th giving us another match win. After the first round, OLL was in first place in the Summer Volleyball League. Please come out to St. Christopher s, 950 West Boylston Street, Worcester (Exit 4 off of Route 190) to see our next game. League Games are on Mondays Game Dates: July 14, 6PM; July 21, 6PM; and July 28, 6:45PM. Volleyball practice for OLL have changed to Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6PM. We are so inspired by the sixth graders who completed their Kingdom assignments that we want to share them with you. Several students used their talents to reach out to others. Isabelle Kingsley planned and hosted a special 95 th birthday celebration for a cherished family friend. She decided on the menu, shopped, and entertained her friend and other family members at her home. Liam Hale presented a piano concert at his home and raising over $300 for our Food Pantry. Emily O'Donnell and Olivia West thought of neighbors battling illnesses by preparing special meals for them. In addition, Olivia raised funds for a group that trains service dogs. All felt that they had done something really worthwhile and hoped to do it again. Some students purchased or collected items to donate to worthy causes. Sydney Pepin and a friend distributed flyers, collecting necessities like clothes and blankets for those whose homes were devastated in the typhoon in the Philippines. Jessica Plumb purchased baby clothes for the St. Vincent de Paul Foundation. Lauren Caponi provided clothes for Caps to Crayons which supplies needy families. "I feel very proud of myself and happy that I could help someone in need." All of this year s reports can be found in the red binder on the table in the Family Center Gathering area. They are an inspiration to us as we continue our practice of Christian stewardship! Bulletin Board Help is needed in the fall! Religious Ed is seeking someone who will be available to change the decorations on the large bulletin board in the church hall six times during the school year to reflect the pre-selected themes that our Religious Ed classes use as guidelines for our interactive bulletin board. If you think you are interested, please call the Religious Ed. office. First Communion Families: Pictures and DVD s are available for pick up on the table outside the Religious Ed. Office.
