The refurbished chimes are wonderful and such a fitting tribute. Daddy loved music and so appreciated being able hear Saint Andrews singers and ringers via the computer. Your contribution to the Presbyterian Water and Sanitation for All Fund is overwhelming and would have meant so much to him. A civil engineer and pastor, he was passionate about water issues. Now, thanks to your generosity, countless individuals will have access to safe, clean drinking water. Daddy would be thrilled! 3 Building Fund Update (As of September 30th) Project Donations to Date Target Amount % Raised A/C Fund $37,835 $72, % Good news! We ve paid off over half the cost of the new air conditioning/ heating system for the sanctuary. In 2013, we borrowed money from our endowments to fund some much needed renovations. These included upgrades to the electrical system in the Bethany Room and church kitchen, the new ramp, and the new air conditioning/heating system in the sanctuary. To date, we have raised over $84,000 (about two-thirds of the total cost of all three projects). We have approximately $34,000 to go. But we need your help to get there! To make a donation, just use the Offering for Saint Andrews Building Improvements envelope in your giving envelope booklet or write Building Fund on the memo line of your check. Thank you in advance for your generous giving! Sanctuary Re-dedication Service Sunday, October 15, 2017 You re invited! Our friends and neighbors at Congregation B nai Abraham are celebrating the renovation of their sanctuary with a Re-dedication Service on Sunday, October 15, at 7:00 pm. They ve asked us to come share in their joy. The service will include an unrolling of the Torah around the perimeter of the new sanctuary space, singing, dancing, and music by the Rodef Shalom Choir from Pittsburgh. A festive dessert and fellowship will follow. The synagogue is located on 519 N. Main Street. Please let Pastor Merry know if you d like to attend. Thanks! After worshiping with Saint Andrews several times this past summer, Covenant invited us to join them one Sunday this fall. The service begins at 11:00 a.m. Feel free to use the parking lot on Jefferson Street across from the church. If you have mobility issues, please park in the alley behind the church and use the ramp entrance. There s an elevator to take you to the sanctuary on the second floor. See you there!

4 Uptown Girls to Visit Sunday, October 22nd On Sunday, October 22, we ll be treated to the sounds of the local vocal group, Uptown Girls, during worship. The group includes 24 young women under the direc- on of Kathy Sawyer. They ll be providing a variety of music throughout the service. Please plan on coming early that morning. The girls will start to sing around 10:15 am. Scottish/Reformation Sunday October 29, 2017 Join us as we celebrate our Presbyterian heritage during our annual Scottish Sunday on October 29, This year, in honor of the 500 year anniversary of the start of the Reformation, we ll be adding some German elements to our Scottish celebration. Don t worry. We aren t trading in our kilts for lederhosen. The service will still include special music by Bagpiper, Lars Morrison, and Scottish fiddler, Melinda Crawford. After worship, we ll gather for a luncheon in the Memorial Room. The meal will include a variety of traditional Scottish and German foods. Musical entertainment will be provided by Melinda and her husband and accompanist Dan Perttu. Melinda is a U.S. National Scottish Fiddler Champion and Director of the Strathgheny School of Fiddling at Westminster College, where she is a professor. In addition to performing and teaching, she is also an award winning composer. It s a privilege to have her with us. Invite your friends and come! Stewardship Sunday Stewardship Sunday is November 12th. Please bring your pledge cards that morning so we can dedicate them together during worship. Thank you. Mid-Week Youth Program Wednesdays 5:15 pm 7:15 pm Join us for an evening of fun, fellowship, music and Bible Study. Our Mid-Week Youth Program (yes, we need a new name!) meets on Wednesday evenings. Our schedule is: 5:15 5:45 Instrumental Music 5:45 6:45 Dinner and Bible Study/Discussion 6:45 7:15 Bells Bring a friend and come! A Request from Our Youth As many of you know, during the school year, we meet on Wednesday evenings here at the church. After a long day of school, some of us have only a few minutes to stop at home before we head back out the door. Some of us don t have time to go home at all. So we love being able to have dinner together in the Memorial Room. Sharing a meal and fellowship is one of our favorite parts of the evening and that s why we need your help. Could you feed us one Wednesday evening during the school year? We aren t hard to please... chicken nuggets, hot dogs, corn dogs, and mac and cheese are always a hit. We LOVE breakfast for dinner. Pizza (frozen or delivery) works too. Throw in a beverage (and sometimes even a treat) and dinner is served. We re not picky. But we re growing fast so we are hungry!! A sign-up sheet is available in the Narthex. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stephanie Slezak or talk to any of our moms. On a typical Wednesday evening, there are youth. Dinner is served at 5:45 pm. Thanks so much for your love, support, and most of all your prayers for us as we grow as Christians. We feel blessed to call you all our church family! The Youth

The Christmas Cookie Walk and Alternative Gift Fair will be on Saturday, December 9, 2017 We ll have a fabulous assortment of homemade cookies for sale and all kinds of unique Christmas gift options. So mark your calendars. Start thinking about what you d like to bake. Invite your friends, neighbors, and co-workers and come! Hanging of the Greens November 26, 2017 Please plan on staying after worship on Sunday, November 26, for the annual Hanging of the Greens. We ll decorate the church and then share a light lunch of pizza and pop. This is a great opportunity for fun and fellowship for the whole family as we deck the halls together! Toys for Tots Box Every year, U.S. Marines collect and distribute Christmas gifts to needy children through the Toys for Tots Program. To date, the marines have given over 500 million toys to 237 million children. If you d like to help families in our community, just bring a new toy (unwrapped) to church during the month of November. A Toys for Tots Collection Box will be in the Narthex starting on Sunday, November 5th. Together, we can make Christmas a li le brighter for children in Butler. 6 October First Sunday Mission Offering Saint Andrews First Sunday Mission Offering in October goes to the McKee Memorial Fund. Money from this fund is used to support Presbyterian mission co-workers Jim and Jodi McGill. A geological engineer, Jim works with the Evangelical Church in the Republic of Niger (EERN) and the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan to provide clean water and sanitation to communities in rural Niger and South Sudan. Jim s wife Jodi is a nurse and public health educator. She is helping the EERN develop church-run health clinics and train students in its new nursing school. Earlier this year, the Mission Team and Session committed to raising $1,000 in support of the McGills work. Thanks to your generous giving, we have now met that goal! So from now to the end of the year, any additional money given to the McKee Memorial Fund will go to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to support hurricane relief efforts. As you all know, the southern United States and portions of the Caribbean have been battered by a series of storms. At the end of August, Hurricane Harvey stalled over Texas. The storm dumped more than 50 inches of rain on some areas, causing historic flooding and millions of dollars of damage. Then Irma churned through Florida. A few weeks later, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico took a direct hit from Marie. Winds over 150 mph downed trees and tore apart buildings while torrential rains washed out roads and bridges. Weeks later, much of the island remains without power, clean water, and reliable communication. We can help. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is the emergency response program of our denomination and assists communities with long-term recovery following a catastrophic event or natural disaster. PDA is already on the ground in Texas and Florida, working with local congregations and Presbyteries as well as other relief agencies. Disaster response teams will also be heading to Puerto Rico as soon as the infrastructure has been repaired enough to sustain long-term relief efforts. To help support their work, simply use the envelope marked McKee Missions Offering in the October section of the Saint Andrews giving envelope booklet, use a First Sunday Mission Offering envelope from the pew racks, or write McKee Memorial Fund on the memo line of your check. Thank you! November First Sunday Mission Offering Our First Sunday Mission Offering in November goes to the Samaritan Counseling Center of Western Pennsylvania. The Center is a faith-based, non-profit organization that helps individuals and families find spiritual, emotional and physical healing through professional counseling and educational programs. Samaritan Counselors seek to provide more than a relief from symptoms; they strive to help clients discover and address those factors that are keeping them from becoming the people God intends them to be. The Center offers a variety of services, including one-on-one counseling for adults, children, adolescents, couples and families, spiritual direction, grief support services, and group seminars. Fees are adjusted according to a client s ability to pay. The Center is funded, in part, by contributions from churches, organizations, individuals, and foundations. Samaritan Counseling has locations in Allegheny, Beaver and Butler Counties. To help fund this quiet but vital ministry, simply use a First Sunday Mission Offering envelope found in the pew racks or mark First Sunday Mission in the memo portion of your check. Thank you! Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves And Other Things the Bible Doesn t Say We ve heard them all our lives. Comments like, Everything happens for a reason, or God won t give you more than you can handle. They sound like wisdom from the Bible. They may even contain a kernel of truth. But do they reflect the teachings of the Gospel? Are these things Jesus might say? Join us this November as we take a closer look at some of these popular proverbs. Using Adam Hamilton s book as our guide, we ll explore what they teach and how they fit with what Jesus actually said. Our series begins Sunday, November 5, at 9:15 am in the church library.
