1 Week of November 18, 2012 Lessons for the Leader In what ways have you sensed God's protection in your life? What did you learn through the experiences? How has your life been different since the experiences? Read Daniel 6:1-5. Based on what you know about Daniel, how would you describe him? How do your descriptions match those listed in the verses? How would people describe you? In what areas of your life do people look to cause you harm? Are there any weak areas in your spiritual life? What can you do to reinforce these areas? Read Daniel 6:6-9. Why did the administrators and satraps (SAY traps) not include Daniel in their discussions? Reread verse 1. Daniel had the same role as these men, yet he was excluded. How do you see God protecting Daniel at this point? Read Daniel 6: What caused Darius to be concerned with Daniel? How do Darius's words in verse 16 differ from the ordinance? What did God teach Darius about Himself? Are you in need of a miracle right now? In what situations do you need God's protection? Read Daniel 6: Compare and contrast the protection of Daniel to Darius's men. How did God demonstrate His presence to Daniel? How does God demonstrate His presence to you? When was the last time you felt God's presence in your life? How did it make you feel? Read Daniel 16: How did God's work in Daniel's life affect people around him? How does God's work in your life affect people around you? Can people see God working in your life? Spend time this week thanking God for His protection and presence. Ask Him to help you honor Him in good times as well as difficult ones. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Mark 2 parallel lines about 15 feet apart on the floor (long enough for the teams to stand on). Form two teams. Say: "Stand on the tape facing the opposite team." Assign each child a number. Place the bandana in the center of the playing area. Say: "I'll call out a number. The children with the same number will race to pick up and return the bandana to their team. If you are the first one to pick up the bandana, you earn a point for your team. If you get the bandana back to your team without being tagged, you earn another point." Play several rounds. Replace the bandana with an envelope. Play the game, continuing to place envelopes in the center. Guide the children with envelopes to open and read aloud the words. Invite the children to place the words in order. Say: "Let's learn about a time a man trusted God's protection." Worship 3 Call to Worship (2 minutes) Enlist an adult to read aloud Psalm 121:5-8. Ask: "What do you think of when you hear the word protection?" Say: "Keep these facts in mind as you listen to our Bible story." 7aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Open your Bible to Daniel 6. Tell the Bible story in your own words. Daniel Stood Up with Protection Based on Daniel 6 King Darius (duh RIGH uhs) appointed three administrators over his kingdom. One of these administrators was a man named Daniel. Daniel was soon promoted to a leadership position over the whole area. The other administrators did not like this and looked for something Daniel was doing wrong. However, because Daniel was trustworthy and honest, they could not find anything. The men finally decided, "We will not find anything wrong with Daniel unless we discover something about the laws of his God." The men went to King Darius and said, "King Darius, may you live forever. All of the leaders in the kingdom agree that you should make a new law. The law should say that for 30 days anyone who asks for something from anyone other than the king will be thrown into the lions' den. Make the law so it cannot be changed." King Darius signed the paper, making the law. When Daniel heard about the law, he went into his house. Three times a day, just as he had always done, he bowed down and worshiped God. When the other men found Daniel worshiping, they went to King Darius and asked, "Didn't you make a law that no one could ask anyone for anything other than you?" King Darius said, "Yes, and the law is unchangeable." 4aSing "Move" (DVD, 3 minutes) 5 Sing "Your Name" (DVD, 3 minutes) 6aIntroduce the Bible Story (3 minutes) Scissors Print and cut apart "Know the Facts" (CD). Distribute "Know the Facts" strips. Invite volunteers to read aloud the information. Stand Up With Protection The men said, "Daniel has ignored you and your law. He prays three times a day." King Darius was upset. He tried everything he could to rescue Daniel, but nothing worked. King Darius could not undo the law. Finally, King Darius gave the order and Daniel was thrown into the lions' den. King Darius said to Daniel, "May your God who you serve protect you." A stone was placed in front of the entrance Page 2 of 13

3 to the den. King Darius returned to his palace, and spent the night fasting. Early the next morning, King Darius rushed to the lions' den. He called out, "Daniel, has your God rescued you from the lions?" Daniel replied, "My God sent an angel and shut the lion's mouths. The lions did not hurt me." King Darius was very happy. He had Daniel brought out of the lions' den. Then King Darius ordered the men who made the charges against Daniel be thrown into the lions' den. King Darius wrote to all of the people these words (read aloud Daniel 6:25-27). 8 Review the Bible Story/Introduce Life Application (5 minutes) Print "Daniel" Teaching Picture (CD). Display. Call attention to the teaching picture. Ask: "If you were Daniel, how do you think you would have felt when you heard the new law? What would you have done? Why do you think Daniel continued to worship God? What happened as a result of Daniel's obedience to God? How did God protect Daniel?" Continue: "Does God protect us? How?" Discuss ways God shows His protection. State: "Sometimes God's way of protecting is not the way we think it should be, but we have to remember God knows everything and does everything for His good." 9aMake Life Application (6 minutes) Worship Guides, pencils Distribute Worship Guides and pencils. Guide the children to complete and talk about the activities. Say: "Even in difficult times we can trust God's protection. God is everywhere at all times. We cannot see Him, but we can know He is with us." Ask: "What are some times you knew God was protecting you? How did it make you feel to know He was helping you?" Share a brief testimony of how God shows His protection in your life. 10a Sing "Amazing Grace" (DVD, 3 minutes)/ Receive Offering 11 Sing "Nothing Is Impossible" (DVD, 3 minutes) 12aLearn the Key Bible Verse (4 minutes) Poster board, marker, tape, scissors Print and cut apart "Protection" (CD). Say: "This verse does not mean we will never have a scraped knee or that nothing bad will happen to us." Distribute "Protection" slips. Say: "One at a time, stand and read aloud your story. We will all repeat the verse after you read." Guide children to read aloud the slips, repeating Psalm 121:8 after each story. 13aShow "Lads" Video #2 (DVD, 7 minutes) Ask: "If you went out on the street and asked people, 'How do you know God protects you?' what do you think they would say?" Continue: "Let's join the Lads on the 'Who Said What?' game show." Show the video. Summarize: "Do bad things ever happen to people? Does that mean God is not protecting them? No, we can know that God protects us all the time, in good and bad times." 14aPray (2 minutes) Invite volunteers to pray, thanking God for His protection. 15aTransition to Application Activities or Wrap-Up Week of November 18, 2012 Page 3 of 13

5 Application Activities Select from the following choices. Each choice is designed for 20 minutes of small group time. Medium-size, smooth rocks (1 per child); permanent markers; double-sided tape or craft glue; craft fur; scissors; pencils Print "Life Application" (CD). Copy 1 strip per child and cut apart. Teacher Tips Invite the children to make additional paperweights to share with friends. Share about a time God protected you. Worship Through Arts and Crafts Lion Paperweights Ask: "Do you think it is fair to punish someone for doing the right thing? Why? How was Daniel punished for obeying God?" Review the Bible story. Say: "Daniel knew the consequences for not obeying the king's order. However, Daniel did not let the fear of being killed stop him from obeying God. Would you be willing to do the same thing as Daniel? Why?" Say: "King Darius was excited to hear Daniel was alive. Because of Daniel's willingness to stand up and trust God's protection, Daniel had an opportunity to tell the king about God. Let's make lion paperweights to put on our desks. When people ask about the paperweights, we can tell them the story of Daniel." Distribute craft supplies. Guide the children to draw lion faces on their rocks. Attach the fur using double-sided tape or craft glue. Distribute "Life Application" strips. Invite each child to complete the statement and attach it to the rock. Select a child to read aloud Psalm 121:8. Pray, thanking God for His protection. Soft, rubber ball Teacher Tips Guide each child to kneel on 1 knee after receiving the ball. Keep the story moving by sounding a bell every 20 seconds. Encourage the children to toss the ball when the bell sounds. Share about a time God protected you. Worship Through Dramatic Play "The Next Part" Guide the children to form a circle. Say: "Let's tell a story using this ball. I'll begin the story and toss the ball to someone. The person to whom I throw the ball must continue the story. Pay attention and listen because you do not know when the ball will be thrown to you." State: "One day, I went to the park. At the park I " Toss the ball to a child to continue the story. Continue for a few minutes. Ask: "Was it easy to add to the story? Why? Can we do the same thing to review our Bible story?" Begin: "King Darius appointed three administrators over his kingdom." Toss the ball and continue the story. Ask: "Do you think it is fair to punish someone for doing the right thing? Why? How was Daniel punished for obeying God?" Say: "Daniel knew the consequences for not obeying the king's order. However, Daniel did not let the fear of being killed stop him from obeying God. Would you be willing to do the same thing as Daniel? Why?" Select a child to read aloud Psalm 121:8. Pray, thanking God for His protection. Week of November 18, 2012 Page 5 of 13

6 Bandanas (1 per child) Teacher Tip Tape the bandanas to the children's backs or shoes. Worship Through Games Lion's Tail Distribute bandanas. Guide the children to tuck the bandanas into their back pockets (enough for the bandanas to stay in place) extending like a lion's tail. Explain: "Pretend you are a lion. The object of the game is to protect your 'tail' (bandana) while capturing the 'tails' of other 'lions.' When your 'tail' is captured, you are out of the game." Play until one or two children remain in the game. Replay as time permits. Say: "This time, tuck the bandana into the side of your shoe. Using only your feet, capture the 'tails' of the other 'lions.' If you pull your own bandana out of your shoe, you are out of the game." Play several rounds. Review the Bible story. Say: "Daniel knew the consequences for not obeying the king's order. However, Daniel did not let the fear of being killed stop him from obeying God. Would you be willing to do the same thing as Daniel? Why?" Continue: "How does God protect us?" Share a brief testimony of how you experience God's protection. Select a volunteer to read aloud Psalm 121:8. Say: "We can know God is everywhere at all times. He loves us and wants to protect us." Pray, thanking God for His protection. Clay, sharp pencils, paper clips, heavyweight paper, paint, paint brushes Print "Signet Rings" (CD). Teacher Tip Provide a Bible concordance and invite the children to explore the use of signet rings. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Signet Rings Display "Signet Rings." Say: "In Bible times, kings wore signet rings. When a king passed a law, he pressed his ring into hot wax and stamped the paper to show the law was approved by him." Explain: "Let's make our own signet seals." Distribute supplies. Guide the children to form the clay into a flat 1½-inch wide patty. Say: "Use the pencil tip or paper clip end to draw a simple picture or write your initials in the clay. Make the seal something that represents you." Continue: "Place a thin layer of paint on your seal and press it on paper. Collect a seal from each person." Ask: "How did King Darius use his seal?" Review the Bible story. 10 My family and I were traveling across the country for vacation. We had been on the road for three days when the accident occurred. We had left the hotel early that moving. After breakfast my sister and mom went to sleep. My dad was driving and I was playing my MP3 player. The next thing I knew I was in a hospital room. A doctor was checking me out. He said that I was going to be OK. I asked about my family. The doctor said they were all OK, my family was fortunate. I knew God protected my family from being seriously hurt in the wreck. I never really thought much about the protection God provides for my family and me. One day, I made a list of the ways I saw God protecting me. Here are some of the things I listed: my parents, my house, my school, food to eat, friends who help me make right choices, doctors, medicines, and the Bible. Can you think of other things to add to the list? It was a great day for camping. My family and I were about to hike to the waterfalls. Mom told everyone to make sure we put on bug spray and sunscreen. At first, I did not want to put on bug spray. I don't like the way it smells. Halfway up the trail we saw a group of insects crawling on the ground. I was glad we saw them and avoided stepping on them. I was also glad I had put on bug spray. You may wonder, how did God protect me in this situation? The bug spray was made by people. God helped the people know how to make the spray as well as the sunscreen. Sometimes God works in other people to protect us. Mr. McAnnelly, a missionary, visited our church a few weeks ago. He serves with people in another country. He told our church how the church he works with is not allowed to have worship services like our church. He said the Christians have to hide to study the Bible and worship, and that if the government leaders found out about the location the people had to meet somewhere else. Some of the Christians were even arrested for what they believed. I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me to worship God.
