1 Week of October 9, 2011 Lessons for the Leader A treasure that had been hidden for years was found. The treasure was the Scriptures. Is the treasure (Bible) hiding in your classroom? Is the treasure (Bible) being used in your classroom? Do you read the Bible personally as well as in front of the preschoolers? Read 2 Kings 22:1-2. Josiah (joh SIGH uh) began his reign as king of Israel at only 8 years of age and ruled for 31 years. What does verse 2 say about Josiah's relationship with God? Read 2 Kings 22:3-7. The young king chose to renovate the temple, which was in disrepair. Read verses An unexpected discovery suddenly halted the project. As Hilkiah (hil KIGH uh) the priest and his workers sorted through items in the temple, the men found the book of the Law. State what Shaphan (SHAY fan), Josiah's secretary, did with the discovery (v. 9). When Josiah heard the words of the scroll, how did he respond? What conclusion did Josiah reach about Israel's relationship with God? The Scriptures had spoken to the young king, stirred his spirit, and moved him to repent. Can you identify a time recently when your reading of the Bible stirred a similar response in you? Read 2 Kings 23:1-3. Josiah assembled religious leaders from Israel and Judah and summoned the people of Jerusalem to the temple. The words of the book of the Law were read to everyone. Standing before the people, Josiah pledged to follow the Lord, obey His commands, and serve God with all his heart. The people responded by making a recommitment to obey God's covenant. We must do more than say we believe the Bible. We must also obey the Bible and do what it requires. Lead the preschoolers to learn the Bible helps them know what God wants them to do. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Large Group Only Format: Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Roll as many scrolls as you want. We'll push the string through the middle of the scrolls and string beads between the scrolls to make our necklaces." State while children work: "Scrolls in Bible times were like our paper today. People wrote on the scrolls so others could read what was written." Help children tie their necklaces on once they finish stringing the scrolls and beads. Conclude: "We'll learn what happened when a lost Bible scroll was found." Worship 3aWelcome Children and Pray (2 minutes) 4 Sing "Whoa!" (scrolls) What were scrolls used for in Bible times?" Encourage responses. Comment: "In Bible times, people wrote God's words on scrolls. People read the scrolls so everyone could hear God's words. We'll learn about a scroll that had been lost or forgotten about for a long time and was found." 7 Find It (4 minutes) Print 2 Kings from "Bible Books" (CD). Display title. State: "Our Bible story comes from the Book of 2 Kings. Is 2 Kings in the Old or New Testament? (Old) Second Kings is close to the front of the Bible. Open your Bibles to 2 Kings." Enlist adults to assist the children. 8aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Bible, bookmark, items to litter story area (books, papers, toys, etc.) Place bookmark in Bible at 2 Kings 22. Litter the area where the story will be told. Place the Bible somewhere in the litter. Comment: "Goodness! Look at this mess. I know I put my Bible here this morning. I need everyone to help me look for my Bible." Stop looking when your Bible is found. Gather the children for the story. Open your Bible to the bookmark and tell the story. Clean the story area after the story. Josiah Read the Lost Scroll Based on 2 Kings 22:1 23:3 Josiah (joh SIGH uh) was eight years old when he became king of Jerusalem. He ruled for 31 years. Josiah followed God's rules. When Josiah had been king for 18 years, he had the temple repaired. Josiah sent his helper Shaphan (SHAY fan) to the temple to give directions to Hilkiah (hil KIGH uh), the high priest. Josiah told Hilkiah to gather all the money collected in the temple. Hilkiah gave the money to the carpenters, builders, and bricklayers working in the temple. These workmen used the money to repair the temple. Josiah Read the Lost Scroll Page 2 of 11

3 During the work on the temple, Hilkiah told Shaphan about a scroll the workers found. Shaphan read the scroll and reported back to King Josiah. Shaphan read the scroll to King Josiah. After Josiah heard the words of the scroll, he became upset. The king told Hilkiah, Shaphan, and some other servants to go learn more about the instructions in the scroll. Josiah knew God was angry with the people because their ancestors their families from years ago had not obeyed the words in the scroll. The men went to Huldah (HUL duh), a prophetess, a woman who spoke for God. Huldah repeated to the men what God told her to say. Huldah told them to tell Josiah that God would punish the people just as the scroll said. The people had disobeyed God and worshiped other gods. God would not punish the people until after Josiah died. God waited because Josiah worshiped God and tried to obey Him. The men returned to King Josiah and told him all that God said through Huldah. 9aReview the Bible Story (5 minutes) Scissors, basket Print "Scrolls" (CD), cut apart, roll, and place in basket. Print "Teaching Picture 6 Josiah" (CD). Invite a child to choose a scroll from the basket. Instruct: "Open your scroll. Let's read what is printed inside." Assist as needed. Lead the child or the group to tell how the word was used in the story. Ask: "Why is this word important?" Continue this pattern with all of the scrolls. Display the teaching picture. Say: "We are doing just like Josiah and reading the scrolls. What do we read today that has the words from the scroll that was found?" (Bible) 10aSing "Lord, Teach Me" (DVD, 2 minutes) 11aPresent Offering and Pray (2 minutes) 12aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes) Worship Guides, pencils Distribute Worship Guides and pencils.
