1 Week of August 26, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Everyone has a story. Some stories are more dramatic, humorous, or entertaining, while others are seemingly mundane but not to God. Though all Christians have a common bond with Jesus, life's journeys take us all on different paths. Recall your own story as you reflect on Paul's life. Read Acts 25: Imagine being Paul. You are in jail for sharing your faith, and being passed from one person to another until it is decided who will try you. How would you respond? Would your testimony tell people what you believed about God? Would you continue to trust God to get you through the days ahead? What challenges do you face each day? How do you trust God to bring you through these difficult situations? Read Acts 26:1-23. Sharing his story, Paul spoke with boldness, poise, and confidence to listeners he knew were not for him. How bold are you with your testimony? Do you "edit" your testimony depending on your audience, or do you share everything God has done for you? Read Acts 26: How would you have responded to Agrippa's question recorded in verse 28? How do you respond when people around you ask the same type of question? Do you try to lead people to Christ? Notice how Paul summarizes his ministry (verse 29). Do you have the same ministry mind-set? How does your calling impact your ministry? Are you willing to tell people what God has done for you in any situation? Know the most effective testimonies are ones that are true, honest, and transparent. Pray the children you teach will see how God works in people's lives and allow Him to work in their lives as well. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. 2 Introduction to Worship 1aGreet the Children 2aPlay "King Says Stop, King Says Go" Masking tape Tape 2 lines on the floor about feet apart. Teacher Tips Play multiple games for larger groups. Change the way the children must move baby steps, walk backward, crawl, and so forth. Select a "king." Guide the "king" to stand behind one line. Direct the children to face the "king" on the opposite tape line. Say: "The king will turn his back and say, 'The king says go.' Everyone will begin moving toward the king. The king will then say, 'stop,' and very quickly turn around. If the king sees someone moving when he turns around, the person must go back and start again. The object is to be the first person to cross the king's tapeline and become 'king.' " Play as time permits. Ask: "Was it difficult to play this game? Why? What are some things that are difficult to do?" Say: "Even in difficult situations, we can honor God by the way we act. We can also tell people how God helped us through the situations." Worship 3 Call to Worship (1 minute) Read aloud Psalm 66:16. 4 Sing "Whoa!" (DVD, 3 minutes) 5a Sing "By Faith" (DVD, 3 minutes)/receive Offering 6a Show "Mystery News" Video (DVD, 7 minutes) Ask: "What would you do if you heard a noise coming from a graveyard in your community?" Show the video. Discuss how the children responded to the noise. 7 Introduce the Life Application (5 minutes) Scissors Print and cut apart "Skit" (CD). Enlist a teacher and child to rehearse the skit before the session. Teacher Tip Look for animated actors who will memorize the script or read with great expression. Say: "Even in difficult situations, we can tell what God has done for us. We all face difficult situations, but do we look at them as opportunities to bring glory to God?" Continue: "Let's listen to a conversation between a teacher and a child." Present "Skit." Say: "The teacher is correct. Being a Christian does not protect us from difficult situations. Let's discover how Paul responded to situations." 8aTell the Bible Story (9 minutes) Prepare a child to read Paul's speech before Agrippa. Copy the speech and encourage the actor to memorize the lines. Teacher Tips Dress the actor in a biblical costume. Say: "Open your Bible to Acts 25." Continue: "We learned how Paul told people about Jesus. Let's discover what happened when he spoke to King Agrippa." Open your Bible to Acts 25. Tell the Bible story in your own words. Say: "For over two years, Paul had been in prison in Caesarea. People made charges against Paul, but he said he had done nothing wrong." Paul Spoke to the King Based on Acts 25:13 26:32 Narrator: Finally King Agrippa (uh GRIP uh) and Bernice (buhr NEES) arrived in Caesarea to visit Festus (FESS tuhs), the ruler. Festus told them about Paul and how people had disagreements over what he taught. Festus said Paul taught about a dead man named Jesus, a man Paul claimed to be alive. King Agrippa said he would like to hear what Paul had to say. Paul Spoke to the King Page 2 of 17

3 The next day Paul was brought before Festus, [actor enters] King Agrippa, Bernice, and many other men in the Governor's royal hall. Festus said, "This is the man everyone has told me about. The people shouted he should be put to death, but he has done nothing that deserves death. I have decided to send him to you." King Agrippa said to Paul, "It is okay for you to speak." [Actor speaks.] Paul: I am glad to tell you what I am accused of by the Jews. I know you are an expert in the Jewish customs and problems. The Jewish people know me and how I lived as a Pharisee, following all of the religious rules. Now I am on trial for teaching about God and His promises. Why is it so difficult for people to believe that God raises the dead? Yes, I did have people arrested for teaching about Jesus, voted to put believers to death, made fun of and punished believers, and chased them to other cities. I was on one of these trips to Damascus, when I saw a light from heaven and I heard a voice asking, "Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" I asked, "Who are you, Lord?" Then Jesus replied, "I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting." Then Jesus told me He was sending me to tell people about Him so they can receive forgiveness of sin." King Agrippa, I was obedient to Jesus. I have preached to people all around the area. It is for this reason they arrested me and are trying to kill me. I am not saying anything that Moses and the prophets did not say that the Messiah must suffer. Through His resurrection, He will help everyone know the way to God. Narrator: Festus shouted, "Paul, you are out of your mind!" Paul: I am not crazy. I am speaking words of truth to you. King Agrippa believes the prophets, right? Narrator: King Agrippa asked Paul, "Are you trying to make me a Christian?" Paul: I wish not only you, but everyone listening would become a Christian. Narrator: After talking things over, King Agrippa announced, "This man has done nothing that deserves death. Send him to Caesar." 9aReview the Bible Story (3 minutes) Worship Guides Print "Paul Spoke" Teaching Picture (CD). Display. Call attention to the teaching picture. Invite the children to recall Bible story facts. Distribute Worship Guides Call attention to "What's the Word?" 10aMake Life Application (6 minutes) Pencils Print "ABCs" (CD). Direct the children to complete "Tough Times" and "What Can I Do?" on the Worship Guides. Say: "Everyone faces difficult situations. Though we cannot control situations, we can control how we respond to them. Even in difficult situations we can tell people what God has done for us." Discuss the ABCs of becoming a Christian. Say: "Paul wanted everyone to become Christians. The Holy Spirit will tell you when it is time to become a Christian." Offer to talk with any child interested in becoming a Christian. 11aPray (2 minutes) Pray for God's help to face difficult situations. Call attention to "Pray for a Missionary" on the Worship Guides. 12aLearn the Key Bible Verse (4 minutes) Poster board, marker, tape Create and display a poster of Psalm 66:16. Say: "Paul did not let difficult situations keep him from telling people about Jesus. Paul knew God was with him." Place the supplies on the table. Say: "Use the craft supplies to decorate a foam container to look like an animal. You can cut out and glue feet, legs, ears, eyes, or other body parts to the container. Make sure the container opens when completed." Assist as needed. Guide the children to cut apart "God's Promises." Say: "These verses tell how God will help us. Let's read a few of the verses." Guide the children to randomly tape the cards around the room. Form two teams. Assign one team "Now" and the other team "Then." Give each team a roll of crepe paper streamers. Say: "The people on the 'Then' team will read each card. If the situation is something people faced during Paul's time, tape your streamer to it. Unroll the streamer and move to another card, allowing the streamer to stretch to the next card. Continue for each card. The people on the 'Now' team will do the same thing, only taping their streamer to situations people face today. Some cards may be both 'Then' and 'Now.' " Assist as needed. Read aloud the cards. Comment on ways people can tell about Jesus even when faced with the situations. Contrast the "Then" and "Now" situations. Say: "Move from one end of the room to the other without touching a streamer. If you touch one, sit down. Let's see who can move the farthest." Read aloud Psalm 66:16. Pray. 6 Inflated balloons (2 for each word of Psalm 66:16 plus extra), permanent marker, basket, masking tape Write the words of Psalm 66:16 on the balloons (1 word per balloon, creating 2 sets). Place the balloons in the basket at the opposite end of the room. Create a starting line. Prepare and post an allergy chart listing balloons. Provide tape loops to secure balloons to the floor. Teacher Tip Share how you are able to tell people about Jesus through difficult times. Balloons (10 plus 1 per child), permanent marker, scissors, paper, pencils Print and cut apart "Pop and Tell" (CD). Read the situation, then place the strip in the balloon. Inflate and tie the balloon. Write the situation on the side of the balloon. Continue for each strip. Cut the paper into small strips (1 per child). Teacher Tip Stretch the balloons before distributing. Worship Through Games Balloon Relays Form two teams and line up behind the starting line. Say: "When I say, 'Go,' the first person on your team will run to a balloon and bring it back to the next person. She will hold the balloon and run to get another one. Bring both balloons back and hand them to the next person in line. Continue adding balloons until someone drops one. Let's see which team can hold the most balloons." Play the game. Guide the children to place the balloons back in the basket. Ask: "Was this game difficult? Why? What are some difficult situations you face? How do you deal with these situations?" Review the Bible story. Guide the children to read aloud Psalm 66:16. Explain: "Each word of Psalm 66:16 is printed on a balloon. The first person on your team will locate the balloon with the first word, bring it back, and tape it to the floor. The next person will locate the second word. Continue until the whole verse is in order." Play the game. Ask: "Which game was easier? What made one more difficult?" Say: "God knows life is not always easy, but He promised to always be with us. Even in difficult situations, He wants us to tell people about Jesus." Pray for courage to tell people about Jesus, even in difficult situations. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Pop and Tell! Ask: "Do Christians today face difficult situations? What are some hard times kids face today? How can you tell others about Jesus in hard times?" Select a volunteer to read aloud Psalm 66:16. Instruct each child to select and hold a balloon. Explain: "Written on the balloons are difficult things we may have to deal with. Let's read aloud these situations." Guide each child to state aloud the situation on his balloon. Say: "Let's pop our balloons and discover ways God will help us." Direct the children to pop their balloons and retrieve the papers. Assist the children in locating the verses in their Bibles. Guide each child to read aloud and discuss the verse related to the difficult situation. Say: "God did not promise life would be easy, but He did promise to always be with us and to help us." Distribute non-inflated balloons, paper, and pencils. Direct the children to think of difficult situations they may face this week. Say: "Write the situation on your paper. Roll the paper up and place it in your balloon. Inflate and tie your balloon." Continue: "On the outside, write God will help me." Say: "If you face this situation, or any other difficult situation this week, look at your balloon and remember God will help you." Pray for each child by name. Child: My principal chose me to give a speech on why we should be allowed to have a Christian club at our school. Teacher: Well, the law is clear. As long as the club is before or after school hours and led by students, you have the legal right to meet. Child: Then why are some people trying to stop us? Teachers: Being a Christian does not protect you from difficult situations. Many people in the Bible faced hard situations. [Child enters and gets teachers attention.] Child: I need help! 9 ABCs of Becoming a Christian ADMIT Admit to God you are a sinner. Repent, turning away from your sin. (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Acts 3:19; 1 John 1:9) BELIEVE Believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and accept God's gift of forgiveness from sin. (John 3:16; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 5:8; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:11-13) CONFESS Confess your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (Romans 10:9-10,13) Asking Jesus to be your Savior and Lord is the most important decision you can make. What does the Bible say about becoming a Christian? God loves you. (1 John 4:10) Sin separates you from God. Sin is choosing your way instead of God's way. (Romans 3:23) Everyone sins even people who have already become Christians. God will forgive you and help you obey Him if you ask. (1 John 1:9) God sent Jesus so you could have eternal life. God sent Jesus so you would not have to die for your sin. Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and rose from the dead. (John 3:16) ABCs (August 26) Page 9 of 17
