1 Week of January 6, 2008 Lessons for the Leader When King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the captives to eat foods from his table, what did Daniel decide? What do you think was wrong with the king s food? What kinds of foods would you expect from a king? Rich foods? Sweets? Fatty foods? Abundant portions? The king s food may have been unclean and prepared improperly not according to Jewish laws. The food also may have been offered first to idols, which would associate Daniel and his friends with idolatrous worship. Have you participated in activities that would associate you with disobedience to God? How can you make better decisions that glorify God? Daniel had to choose between obeying a king or God. If Daniel refused to eat the king s food, he might insult the king and appear to be rebellious. Despite the consequences, Daniel made the wise choice to obey God. Are you seeking God s will and following His rules? Although Daniel decided not to eat the king s food, he was not disrespectful or rebellious. Daniel offered a plan. He challenged the guard to test a different menu for 10 days. Just like Daniel, you represent God. How can you ensure your actions are pleasing to God? Notice how God was working Daniel chose to be obedient, and God worked in the heart of a potential enemy to help Daniel be obedient. How can you use Daniel s example of obedience to God when you face simple or critical decisions of obeying God? God wants us to obey Him because He loves us. He gave us the Bible to learn how to live in His protection and provision. Pray for God s guidance for your choices. Express to God how you want to be obedient to Him. What do these symbols mean? How to Choose

3 Daniel Chose Obedience Based on Daniel 1:1-20 King Nebuchadnezzar [NEB-yoo-kad-NEZ-uhr] attacked and captured Jerusalem and the kingdom of Judah. (Thumbs down!) The king took many captives, or prisoners, back to Babylon with him. (Thumbs down!) Four of the captives were Daniel and his three friends, Shadrach [SHAD-rak], Meshach [MEE-shak], and Abednego [uh-bed-nih-goh]. The king ordered his chief court official to select the handsomest and most intelligent of the captives for court service. The king ordered special foods to be served to the chosen young men. Daniel looked at the king s food and knew that eating it meant disobeying the laws God gave Daniel s people. (Thumbs down!) Daniel chose to obey God. (Thumbs up!) In order not to insult or anger the king, cleverly, Daniel asked the chief official for permission not to eat the king s food. (Thumbs up!) Because Daniel chose to obey God, God caused the chief official to show favor toward Daniel. (Thumbs up!) When Daniel suggested testing a different menu of only vegetables and water, the guard agreed to test the menu for ten days. (Thumbs up!) After ten days the guard compared the four young men against the rest of the group who ate the king s food. The guard saw Daniel and his friends looked better and healthier. (Thumbs up!) The young men who ate the king s food did not look as healthy. (Thumbs down!) The guard continued to give Daniel and his friends vegetables and water. (Thumbs up!) God was pleased with the four friends choice to obey, and they became wiser and stronger than all the other men. (Thumbs up!) At the end of the three years the king discovered that Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were ten times better than all the other advisors in his kingdom. (Thumbs up!) Apply the Bible Story (2 minutes) Ask the kids to recall the choices Daniel made. (Emphasize: He learned God s laws. He wanted to obey God. He asked for healthy food. He did not demand his way. He suggested a 10-day test. He was a good example to others.) Ask the kids how this Bible story can help them make better choices to obey God. Call on kids to respond. Use Worship Guides (3 minutes) Lead the kids to complete Today s Menu on their Worship Guides by marking foods on Daniel s list that they have tasted. Discuss the foods Daniel ate compared to the foods the kids like. Guide the kids to complete the menu with a list of healthy foods they like to eat. Encourage the kids to compare their answers with others. Show Video #6 DVD (8 minutes) Ask the kids to compare the choices Factoid Girl faced with the type of decisions Daniel and his friends faced. Worship Through Arts and Crafts Show Keep God s Commands as you say: This is a list of God s commands. The Bible helps us make good choices. Let s read the Bible. Lead the boys and girls to open their Bibles to Exodus 20:3-17. Quickly read the Ten Commandments, emphasizing these are starting points of knowing what God expects and knowing how to obey God. Show the kids your flag and ask if anyone knows what a flag on the play means. Allow kids to respond. Toss your flag on the ground and explain that a referee uses this signal to let players know that someone broke a rule or made an illegal move. Say: Sometimes we make poor choices and break God s rules. Today we ll design a flag to use as a reminder to make good choices based on what the Bible says. Give each child a piece of the yellow fabric and display the markers. Show the key Bible verse poster. Guide the kids to write on their flags the words of the key Bible verse, Joshua 24:24b, or the life application, I can use the Bible to help me make good choices. Lead the kids to take turns reading the You Make the Call cards. Say: If the person makes a good choice, throw both hands in the air, signaling a Score! If the person makes a bad choice, throw the flags on the ground, signaling a Foul! When the boys and girls throw their flags, ask the kids to name better choices the person could have made. Invite a volunteer to pray that we use the Bible to make good choices. Worship Through Dramatic Play Comment: In order to know how to make good choices, we have to read the Bible and do what it says. The Bible can help us make good choices. Show the key Bible verse poster. Explain that the key Bible verse, Joshua 24:24b, was the Israelites answer to Joshua s challenge to obey God. Lead the kids in cheering the verse a few times. Give each child one of the megaphone cups and a marker. Guide the kids to copy today s key Bible verse onto their cups. (Younger children may prefer to copy only the reference.) Guide the children to work together to create a cheer, using the words of the key Bible verse and adding motions the way cheerleaders do. On co-ed squads the boys do one motion while the girls do another. Sometimes the entire squad does the same thing. Help the kids develop the cheer so that the motions can help them remember the words. Encourage the kids to use their megaphones during all or part of the cheer. Practice together and prepare to lead the rest of the kids in the cheer during Wrap-Up. Week of January 6, 2008
