1 Week of March 4, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Worship is "giving honor, reverence, and praise to God." Even after some of the most difficult trials, we see God's people choose to worship whether in prayer, in song, or in action. Read 1 Kings 18:1-15. Obadiah (OH buh DIGH uh), "Yahweh's servant of the Lord," was a man of God in charge of King Ahab's palace. After meeting and hearing Elijah's request to meet King Ahab, Obadiah knew if Elijah did not show up, Ahab would kill Obadiah. Consider the faith Obadiah demonstrated by calling on Ahab to meet Elijah. What kind of character did Obadiah show in trusting God to bring Ahab to Elijah? Read 1 Kings 18: God has not given us a spirit of fear. We are His and we should have confidence not in ourselves, but in Him. Notice, not once did Elijah fear or question whether God would do what Elijah asked. In confidence, Elijah taunted the followers of Baal. Elijah knew this act of God's power would change the people's hearts and minds toward God and help stop the spread of idol worship. What would happen if we had the confidence of Elijah? Read 1 Kings 18: Elijah demonstrated God's power and defeated the worshipers of Baal. Yet, Elijah knew God was not finished. Elijah's response? To kneel down and pray. Is God finished with us? What about with the children we teach? Reflect on the way Elijah handled himself. Though we may think Elijah's situation is incomparable to our day-to-day situations, if we ask God to reveal Himself, He will. Pray that God will reveal Himself in a new way to both you and the children you teach. What do these symbols mean? 1aApplication Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. 2 Introduction to Worship 1aGreet the Children 2aPlay "Last One Standing" Teacher Tip Keep the game moving by calling the statements as quickly as possible. Say: "I will call out a statement. If the statement applies to you, sit down. Let's see who is the last one standing." Call out statements such as, "If you have brown hair," "If you are wearing a red shirt," "If you have a pet," "If you are eight years old," and so forth. Continue until only one person is standing. Replay as time permits. Ask: "How many people were standing at the end? Today we will discover what we need to remember about the number one and how it relates to God." Worship 3 Sing "Live It Out" (DVD, 3 minutes) 4aPray (1 minute) 5aSing "Happy Day" (DVD, 3 minutes) 6a Introduce the Life Application and Key Bible Verse (4 minutes) Ask: "What is worship? Who do we worship? Why do we worship?" Say: "Worship is 'giving honor, reverence, and praise to God.' Worship is our response to who God is and what He does." Continue: "The Bible tells us there is only one true God. This is the God we are to worship. Listen to what the prophet Jeremiah wrote." Read aloud Jeremiah 10:10a. Say: "Repeat this statement after me, 'We can worship the one true God.' " Guide the children to repeat the statement several times, stating it louder each time. Say: "There are two main men in our Bible story. One is King Ahab, an Israelite king who disobeyed God more than any other king of Israel. Each time you hear me say, 'Ahab,' say, 'Oh no! Not Ahab!' " Continue: "The other man is the prophet Elijah. A prophet is 'a person who spoke God's words to the people.' When you hear me say, 'Elijah,' say, 'Listen Up!' " Practice the statements. 8aTell the Bible Story (8 minutes) Print "Elijah" Teaching Picture (CD). Display. Call attention to the teaching picture. Open your Bible to 1 Kings 18. Say: "This story begins after Elijah sends word to Ahab there would be no dew or rain in the land because of all the wicked things Ahab did." Elijah Based on 1 Kings 18 For three years it had not rained. As a result, a famine took place. A famine is 'a shortage of food brought about when there is no rain.' God said to Elijah, "Go see Ahab. I am going to send rain." Meanwhile, the famine was so bad Ahab sent Obadiah, the man of God in charge of the palace, to look for food and water. Ahab went one way to look for food, while Obadiah went in the opposite direction. As Obadiah walked along the road, Elijah appeared to him. Elijah said to Obadiah, "Tell Ahab you saw me." Obadiah was scared because if Elijah left before Ahab came, it would appear Obadiah was lying. Elijah promised Obadiah he would not leave. Obadiah told Ahab about meeting Elijah. When Ahab met Elijah, Ahab asked, "Is that really you Elijah? You destroyed Israel." Elijah responded, "I have not destroyed Israel. You and your father did because you refused to follow God's commandments. You followed Baal, a false god." Elijah challenged Ahab to a test. 7aIntroduce the Bible Story (3 minutes) Guide the children to open their Bibles to 1 Kings 18. Elijah Ahab, the Israelites, and all the false prophets gathered at Mount Carmel. Elijah said to the people, "How long will you not decide what to Page 2 of 13

3 believe? If you believe God is God, then follow Him. If you believe Baal is god, then follow Baal." The people did not respond. Then Elijah said, "Let's have a test. I will prepare an altar and your prophets of Baal prepare one as well, but neither of us will light the fire. You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of my God. The God who lights the fire is the one true God." The prophets of Baal built their altar. From early morning until noon, the people called out, "Baal answer us!" They even danced around the altar, but nothing happened. Elijah said, "Shout louder. Maybe your god is thinking it over, gone for a walk, or sleeping." All afternoon the people shouted, but nothing happened. Then Elijah repaired a torn-down altar and dug a trench around it. He placed wood and meat (his offering) on the altar. Then he instructed water to be poured on the altar. So much water was poured that it ran off and filled the trench around the altar. Elijah walked near the altar and said, "God, let it be known that You are God and I am your servant. God, answer me so all of these people will know You are the one true God." Fire came and burned up the altar, wood, meat, stones, dust, and all of the water in the trench. When the people saw what happened, they fell facedown and said, "God is God!" Elijah said to Ahab, "I hear the sound of a rainstorm." Then Elijah went to the top of Mount Carmel to pray. Six times Elijah sent his servant to look at the sea, but saw nothing. On the seventh time, the servant saw a rain cloud. Before long, it began to rain. 9 Review the Key Bible Verse/Make Life Application (5 minutes) Blue construction paper, scissors, marker Cut the paper into large raindrop shapes. Write the words of Jeremiah 10:10a on the shapes (1 word per shape). Distribute the raindrops. Guide the children with raindrops to arrange themselves in order. Point to and state aloud each word. Remove one raindrop and repeat the verse. Continue for additional raindrops. Say: "Elijah proved there is one true God. We can worship and praise the same God." If I do not call your word, toss your balloon in the air. When the balloons land, I will tell you to select another one. I will select another card. We will continue until only one person remains standing." Guide each child to pick up a balloon. Select and read aloud a word card. Direct the child to hold the balloon and be seated. Continue until only one child is standing. Replay as time permits. Say: "Let's arrange the balloon words to make a sentence." Arrange balloons. Read aloud: "I can worship the one true God." Let's discover what some people with different religious beliefs believe." Form four groups. Distribute "Beliefs." Guide the children to read aloud and talk about the information. Say: "Even in Elijah's time people worshiped false gods. God does not want us to worship anyone or anything other than Him. We need to pray for people who worship false gods." Select a child to read aloud Jeremiah 10:10a. Say: "There is only one true God. This is the God we are to worship." Ask: "How do we worship God?"
