1 Week of June 16, 2013 Lessons for the Leader On a scale from 1 to 10 (1=not difficult at all; 10=extremely difficult), how difficult is it to trust God's answers to your prayers? Throughout the Bible we find stories about people who trusted God to hear and answer their prayers in His way. In 1 Kings we find one example as Elijah faced off with the prophets of Baal. Read 1 Kings 18:1-19. After three years of drought, God extended grace to Israel and promised to send rain. While on his journey to find King Ahab, Elijah met Obadiah (oh buh DIGH uh), one of the king's officials. Obadiah agreed to tell the king he had located Elijah. When Elijah and Ahab met, Elijah confronted Ahab with his disobedience to God as well as issued a challenge. Why did God arrange for the challenge before the rain? Read verses When the Israelites and prophets of Baal assembled, Elijah confronted their indecision about whom they would worship. The people agreed to the terms of the test: they would acknowledge the god who miraculously sent fire to consume the prepared sacrifices as the one true God. How confident do you think the people of Israel were in the outcome of the test? Read verses After an all-day attempt to provoke Baal to send fire with no response, it was Elijah's turn to pray. He asked God to answer so that the people would know He is God. Do you think Elijah knew exactly how God would answer his prayer? Reflect on how God has answered your prayers. God always hears and answers our prayers, but He may or may not answer the way we think is best. How can you encourage children to trust that God always answers prayers? What do these symbols mean? Trusting God Focus Passage: 1 Kings 18:1-39 Key Bible Verse: Psalm 17:6 Life Application I can pray knowing God will answer in His way. Write a B if you believe the story, or an N if you do not. Speak loud enough for only your group to hear. Place your paper in the bag." Guide each group to complete the first story. Rotate the groups clockwise to the next folders. Continue for four rotations. Say: "Let's see if we all believe the same thing." Reveal the groups' responses. Say: "We should believe stories 1, 2, and 3 are true, but stories 4 and 5 are not." Ask: "Do you ever find it difficult to believe some of the stories in the Bible? Why?" Conclude: "Today we will learn about some unbelievable situations, but we can know the events are true." Did you think we were listening to you?" Explain: "When we pray, we talk and listen to God. We can trust God always hears our prayers. He wants to listen to us. We can also know God will answer our prayers." 7aShow "Backyard Explorers" Video #1 (DVD, 7 minutes) Say: "Imagine you have a problem that only a king can fix. You write a letter to the king, but instead of receiving an answer, you receive a strange item. What would you do? Let's see how the Backyard Explorers deal with this issue." Show the video. Compare how the king answered the letters to how God answers our prayers. 8aSing "Everlasting God" (DVD, 3 minutes)/ Receive Offering/Pray 9aIntroduce/Tell the Bible Story (8 minutes) Pull It Together 10 brown lunch bags, newspapers, scissors, tape, red tissue paper Print and cut apart "Stones" (CD). When you hear me say the word on your stone, bring it to me." Say: "Open your Bible to 1 Kings 18." Open your Bible. Tell the Bible story in your own words. Say: "Elijah was a prophet, a person who told the people what God wanted them to know. Many of the people of Israel worshiped idols. Elijah told the people they needed to worship God. King Ahab did not like what Elijah taught. In fact, Ahab wanted to kill Elijah because he spoke about God. Elijah trusted God to hear and answer his prayers. Let's begin our story at this point." 3 Trusting God Based on 1 Kings 18:1-39 For three years, there had been a famine (a shortage of food) in Israel because God had not allowed it to rain. Finally, God said to Elijah, "Go see King Ahab. I am going to make it rain." A man named Obadiah (oh buh DIGH uh) worked for King Ahab, but followed God. Obadiah protected 100 prophets from Ahab's wife Jezebel (JEZ uh bel). Ahab told Obadiah, "Go throughout the land looking for food." Ahab went one way and Obadiah went the other looking for food. While searching for food, Obadiah met Elijah. Elijah told him, "Go tell Ahab, I am here." Obadiah was scared. He thought while he was going to tell Ahab, Elijah would leave and then Ahab would think Obadiah was lying and kill him. Elijah promised he would not leave. Obadiah went to tell Ahab about Elijah. When Ahab saw Elijah, he blamed him for causing the famine and destroying Israel. Elijah said, "I did not destroy Israel. You and your family did because you worship false gods and do not follow God's commandments. Gather all the people of Israel together at Mount Carmel. Also bring your prophets of Baal and Asherah (uh SHEE ruh)." Ahab did as Elijah instructed. Elijah asked the people, "How long until you decide whom to worship? If God is the real God, worship Him. If you believe Baal is real, worship him." The people did not say anything. Elijah continued, "I am the only prophet of God. Baal has 450 prophets here. Let's select two bulls and offer them as sacrifices. Prepare the altars and place the animals on them. When they are ready, call on the name of your god, and I will call on my God. The God who answers is the one true God." The prophets prepared their altar. From morning to noon, they called on Baal to send down fire, but nothing happened. The prophets danced around the altar, but nothing happened. Elijah told the prophets to shout louder, but nothing happened. The prophets continued until evening, but nothing happened. Elijah gathered the people around him. He repaired the altar, dug a trench around it, and placed the wood and sacrifice on the altar. He instructed water to be poured on top of all of it three times. So much water was used that it filled the trench. Then Elijah prayed to God. Elijah said, "Show us who You are God, and that I am Your servant. Answer me so all the people will know You are the one true God." God sent fire and burned up the altar, the stones, and all the water. All the people fell facedown and said, "God is God! God is God!" 10aMake Life Application (5 minutes) Pull It Together Worship Guides, pencils, tape Print "Elijah" Teaching Picture (CD). Display. Call attention to the teaching picture. Say: "Prayer is talking to God. In what ways did Elijah talk with God? Did God answer Elijah's prayer? In what ways?" Continue: "Does God hear us when we pray? Does He answer our prayers?" Say: "The Bible says we can always trust God to answer our prayers, but God answers in His own way. That means we do not always get what we want. We have to trust God knows what is best." Distribute Worship Guides and pencils. Guide children to complete "Finish the Altars" and "Follow the Directions." Conclude: "Sometimes God answers yes. Sometimes He says no. Other times, He wants us to wait. Still, He always answers our prayers." 11 Learn the Key Bible Verse (5 minutes) Pull It Together Poster board, markers, tape Divide the words of Psalm 17:6 into 4 sections. Write each section on the poster board, using different colors of markers. Display. Form two groups. Assign each group two parts of the verse to read aloud. Guide the groups to read aloud the verse. Let's write our own musical prayers." Distribute paper and pencils. Direct: "Think of a simple tune, such as 'Mary Had a Little Lamb.' I could sing the words 'I praise God for who He is, who He is, who He is. I praise God for who He is, He answers my prayers.' Write words that praise God to fit your tune." Assist as needed. Invite the children to share their musical prayers. Pray, thanking God that we can pray and know He answers prayers. Week of June 16, 2013 Page 5 of 21

6 Pull It Together Copy paper, 2 chairs, marker, rope or heavy string, plastic tablecloth Create a volleyball-type playing area using the chairs and rope. Drape the tablecloth over the string so children cannot see over it. Write the letters of the alphabet on individual sheets of paper (1 per page). Wad up the papers and distribute on the floor. Teacher Tip Direct the children to remain seated. Worship Through Games Prayer Ball Toss Review the Bible story. Ask: "Why did Elijah trust God? Would you do the same thing? Why?" Ask: "When was the last time God answered your prayers?" Share about a time God answered your prayers. Form two teams, guiding the teams to opposite sides of the net. Explain: "The goal of this game is to get all of the paper wads off of your team's side. To do so, work together to toss the papers over the net. When I call 'time,' everyone hold your hands up in the air. We will count the paper wads. The team with the fewest paper wads earns a point. The team with the most paper wads will select and open one. Tell us something you can trust God to do using the letter. For example, if you select the letter 's' you can say, 'We can trust God to help us at school.' " Direct the kids to begin tossing the paper wads back and forth. Call "time." Count the paper wads, award points, and direct the team with the most paper wads to open one. Reveal the letter and allow the team to state how they can trust God to do something. Continue as time permits. Pray, thanking God that we can pray and know He answers prayers. Pull It Together Masking tape; clay; mirror; paper; pencils; 4 file folders; red, blue, green, and black markers; scissors, stopwatch Print "Labyrinth" (CD). Teacher Tips Simplify the rotations by rotating clockwise. Limit the number of children to no more than 3 at each station. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Prayer Labyrinth Review the Bible story. Ask: "Why did Elijah trust God? Would you do the same thing? Why?" Say: "We can know God will answer our prayers in His way. God knows what is best for us and will meet our needs." Guide the children to locate and read aloud Psalm 17:6. Ask: "When was the last time God answered your prayers?" Share about a time God answered your prayers. Ask: "Have you ever heard the word labyrinth? A labyrinth is a type of maze. The labyrinth includes a combination of paths making it difficult to find your way out. Let's see how well you can follow a labyrinth." Assign each child to a color line. (See "Labyrinth.") Say: "Read and complete the instructions in the folder. When you finish, wait until I tell you to move, then follow your assigned color to the next location. Each time you move, follow the arrows and color of your group." Allow three minutes at the location, then guide the children to change stations. Continue until the children complete all four stations. Gather the children in the center of the room. Discuss the experiences. Pray, thanking God that we can pray and know He answers prayers.
