1 Week of March 18, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Have you ever felt people were continually plotting against you? Consider the plots against Daniel. Read Daniel 1 2. Notice how God orchestrated Daniel and his three friends to be hand-picked and placed in the king's court. Before Daniel and his friends could serve, they had to train for three years. Can you imagine preparing for a job for three years? All four men were chosen for the king's court. After hearing of the king's dream, notice Daniel called in his friends and asked for prayer. God allowed Daniel to interpret the king's dream. Through Daniel and his witness, King Nebuchadnezzar (NEB yoo kad NEZ uhr) recognized God. Read Daniel 5 6. After Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar (bel SHAZ uhr, idol worshiper) became the new ruler. While defiling both God and Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar saw handwriting on the wall. Daniel was called on to interpret. Later, under the rule of King Darius, Daniel was promoted to the third highest officer in the king's court. However, with high position came high responsibilities. After being caught disobeying the king's command, Daniel was thrown in the lions' den. Through it all, Daniel never once compromised his faith. He came out of the lions' den physically untouched. Reflect on Daniel's life journey. Remember, all God needs is a willing vessel. How willing are you to do or to be whatever He calls you to? Pray that you and the children you teach are open to God and glorify Him in all circumstances. How do you think Daniel was changed spiritually? What do these symbols mean? 1 Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. Daniel Based on Daniel 1 2; 5 6 Three years into the reign of King Jehoiakim (jih HOY uh kim), King Nebuchadnezzar (NEB yoo kad NEZ uhr) defeated and took over Judah. Nebuchadnezzar ordered the men in good health, good looking, smart, and able to serve in the king's palace to be brought to Babylon. The men were trained and taught in the ways and language of Babylon. The training lasted for three years, then the men served in the king's court. Among the men were Daniel, Hananiah (HAN uh NIGH uh), Mishael (MISH eh uhl), and Azariah (as uh RIGH uh); however, the chief official gave them new names. Their new names were Belteshazzar (bel tih SHAZ uhr), Shadrach (SHAD rak), Meshach (MEE shak), and Abednego (uh BED-nih goh). In accordance with his beliefs, Daniel asked permission to not eat the king's foods. However, if Daniel were not healthy, the chief official was worried he would be punished. [Begin tracing over the vegetable poster. Continue as you tell the story.] Daniel asked the guard to test him and his three friends. Daniel said, "For 10 days give us only vegetables and water. Then examine us." The guard agreed. At the end of 10 days, the men looked healthier than the others. So, the guard gave Daniel and his friends the foods they requested. God not only gave Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego great favor, but also great knowledge in literature and dreams. Every time a decision was to be made, the king asked the men for their opinions. [Begin tracing over the sleeping king poster. Continue as you tell the story.] King Nebuchadnezzar had a troubling dream. He called for his wise men to tell him what he dreamed, and what the dream meant. When the wise men could not do this, the king became Page 2 of 19

3 angry and sentenced the men to death. The king called for Daniel to interpret the dream. Daniel asked the king to give him some time to figure out the dream and its meaning. The king agreed. Daniel prayed to God. That night God revealed to Daniel the dream and its meaning. Daniel told the king all God revealed to him, in return the king honored God and rewarded Daniel by putting him in charge of all of Babylon. Sometime later, a new king came to power. [Begin tracing over the king poster. Continue as you tell the story.] King Belshazzar (bel SHAZ uhr) held a great feast. He used sacred items from the temple to serve his guests. The people praised their false gods. Suddenly a hand appeared and wrote on the palace wall. The king and his guests were terrified. The king called all his wise men to read the message, but none of them could. Daniel was called before the king to interpret the writing. As a reward, the king promised him gifts and a position in the government, but Daniel refused them. He told the king, "You exalted yourself higher than God. You are using items from God's temple in your partying and worshiping false gods. The writing on the wall states, 'God has numbered the days of your kingdom. You are guilty of disobeying God. Your kingdom will be divided.' " That night, King Belshazzar was killed. Daniel now served under King Darius (duh RIGH uhs). The king liked Daniel, but the other wise men became jealous and planned to get rid of him. They convinced King Darius to sign a law stating people could not pray to anyone except the king for 30 days. Daniel remained faithful and prayed three times a day to God. The wise men reported Daniel's actions to the king. Although Darius was upset because he liked Daniel, he had no choice but to follow the law. Daniel was thrown into the lions' den. [Begin tracing over the lion poster. Continue as you tell the story.] The next morning, the king rushed to check on Daniel. Daniel said God closed the lions' mouths and kept him safe. As a result, Darius praised God. 7aMake Life Application (7 minutes) Pull It Together Worship Guides, pencils Distribute Worship Guides and pencils.
