3 Peace and Global Witness Offering S.H.O.E. The Peace and Global Witness Offering (formerly the Peacemaking Offering) is coming up on October 2nd and 9th. This offering is intended to address systems of injustice throughout the world, while bringing peace to people through Christ. One in four United States students reports being bullied at school. Up to 70 percent of women experience violence in their lifetimes, whether it is domestic abuse or otherwise. One in three women has been the victim of domestic abuse. One in four children has been physically abused. In 48 countries, conflict and political violence are the rise. Human trafficking and forced labor affect 3 out of every 1,000 people in the world today. This offering helps to address issues like bullying, domestic abuse/violence, political violence and human trafficking by supporting a range of ministries devoted to peacemaking and reconciliation. It supports the peacemaking efforts of the Presbyterian Church at every level, and provides an opportunity for us to witness to God s gift of peace in the world. Where does it go? Hiland will retain 25% of our offering to support our own peacemaking ministry. This year, our portion will go to support Mark and Anna Ruby working the Middle East through the Frontiers organization. For more information about Frontiers, go to 25% is used to support the Pittsburgh Presbytery and Synod Peacemaking efforts. 50% goes to the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA. Three ways to donate: Write a check to Hiland and mark it PGW offering in the memo line. Text PEACE to to give $10. Though He was the Mighty God, He had become a helpless baby. The King hadn t come to be the boss. He had come to be a servant. - The Jesus Storybook Bible. In the Christmas story there is the humble and there is the grand and glorious. We will look at both during Advent ure. The humble shepherds were considered the lowliest of the low as they were out in the fields tending shaggy smelly sheep. But the good news and the Good News was that Jesus was coming to earth to live with us, leaving His heavenly home. This news was delivered by the grand and glorious angels, heavenly messengers to those lowly shepherds. We will have recreation, a bible story, make some crafts and gifts for others and practice for the Children s Christmas Present-tation on December 11th. They will also have an opportunity to sing one of the songs during our family-friendly Christmas Eve worship service. 4...to serve Christ and share His love.
5 Adult Education The Battle Plan for Prayer FFF Is Back! The Battle Plan for Prayer is inspired by the feature film War Room. This is a nine-week course with DVD and live lessons challenge believers of any age to become powerful prayer warriors. Participants can join at any time, though being there from the start is helpful as this course does build on itself. It meets in the Sanctuary at 11 AM after worship. Meet Hiland s Interim Pastor Rev. Carol Divens Roth is a graduate of Wright State University with a BA in English and a graduate of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, receiving her M.Div in She is an experienced interim pastor, serving in this capacity in many churches in the Pittsburgh Presbytery since 1989, including Waverly Presbyterian Church, Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, Glenshaw Presbyterian Church and most recently at Sixth Presbyterian Church in Squirrel Hill. She also served as the Interim Associate Pastor to small congregations (80) in the Pittsburgh Presbytery from When asked to describe the characteristics of the church she would like to serve, Rev. Roth replied, The congregation I seek to serve is in transition, moving into the future God has prepared. The congregation is eager to discern their call to mission and ministry as they seek new pastoral leadership. The staff and Session of Hiland are looking forward to working with Rev. Roth as we move forward into the future into the place God has envisioned for Hiland. We are blessed to have the Rev. Carol Divens Roth here to serve Hiland as we search for our new pastor, and with the continued prayers and support of the congregation, we will be able to accomplish our mission as set forth by God. Food, Fellowship, and Fun has returned!! An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but we hope that it has a different effect on you! Join us on October 2nd in Fellowship Hall following worship to share some delicious apple-inspired snacks and plant some personal seeds that will grow into lifelong friendships! Everyone needs a break every once in a while and we ve built that right into our Adult Education hour. The first Sunday of the month we typically take a break from education to simply enjoy each other s company and a good snack. Looking forward the November 2nd F3 theme food is the Pumpkin! 5 to serve Christ and share His love.
