5 A Letter to Hiland from Pastor Carol Dear Friends, I love you. Let's start with that...and end with it, too. There may be some of you Hilanders who don't know that some health concerns have arisen which mean that I will not be able to stay as your interim pastor. That is a hard sentence to write for many reasons: you have been warm and welcoming, you are eager to move forward into the future God has prepared and to tackle the necessary work, and you want this corner of God's kingdom known as Hiland Presbyterian Church to fulfill its calling to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. It seemed we were meant to carry out this work together. Then when the new, installed pastor is chosen by the Holy Spirit through the prayerful partnership of this congregation, Pittsburgh Presbytery and the discernment of a call by the candidate him/herself, we could say our heartfelt good-byes and continue to pray for each other's new ministry. Interim ministry comes with a built-in ending. This one is premature and it hurts. However, the ultimate end was pre-determined and it will still happen. You are not adrift in a leaky lifeboat. Your Session is at work to secure a new interim pastor who will be here soon. You will take a look at resources, ministry and mission. When the time is right you will elect a committee to search for the new pastor who will be God's choice for the Hiland God is calling you to be. I leave with some grief that this journey is ending now for me. You are easy to love. While I don't fully understand this particular timing, I trust God will be with you every step of the way and with me also. Let's remember together the message of the season: Be Not Afraid! Thank you for your prayers. You are in mine forever. I love you. Shalom, Carol 2017 Chancel Flowers The sign-up sheet for Chancel flowers will be in the narthex through the end of December or contact the church office (hilandchurchofffice@gmail.com or ) with the following information: 1) The date you wish to provide flowers 2) How you want the worship guide announcement to read 3) If you will be picking up or donating your flowers to the homebound after worship 4) If you will be providing your own flowers please let us know that. Poinsettia Order Form Orders and payments must be returned by Sunday, December 4th. No orders will be taken after the deadline. Please fill in the blanks as it should appear in the worship guide announcement. They have asked us to work with them on a small but meaningful project on Tuesday December 6th at 6:30 PM. Please support our Jewish neighbors by participating. The project is related to the safety pin symbol. Why a safety pin? Wearing a safety pin is a sign of unity and safety. It is part of a movement that originated in the UK as a response to the Brexit vote. In the US, it is a visual way to express support and solidarity with people who fear the alarming and growing trend of racism, sexism and xenophobia. On December 6th, we will be working jointly with people at Temple Ohav Shalom to put together card stock notes with safety pins attached. We expect the project to take about an hour. The completed cards, with safety pins attached, will be available to both our congregations for those who would like to have one. If you would like to read more about the safety pin symbol, please read this blog post from Lindsay McCarty White, daughter-inlaw of Tom and Vera White, and former member of Hiland: unityyouthpastor.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-juxtaposition-of-safety-andpins.html What the safety pin means is not the main point of this project. The point for us, the people of Hiland, is to show solidarity and love by working together with our Jewish neighbors who live near us and are part of our local community. If you are interested in attending, or have questions, please contact Carolyn Gibbs at gibbses5@verizon.net or (leave a message). Temple Ohav Shalom is located at 8400 Thompson Run Rd, Allison Park, PA Join us on December 6th at 6:30 PM! A Visit to Bethlehem Explore the true meaning of Christmas this holiday season. Walk through the streets of Bethlehem as they may have been on the first Christmas Eve. Chat with the villagers who are busy at their work, and a-buzz with the news of a special birth. Then make your way to the stable and visit the newborn Christ Child. A Visit to Bethlehem will be held at St. John s Lutheran Church of Highland, on Cumberland Road in McCandless, December 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th from 1-4 PM. Admission is free. Please call for information. Returning this year is the Olive Branch Gift Shop, featuring handcrafted items from around the world. Proceeds benefit third world countries via SERRV International....to serve Christ and share His love.
7 Christmas Joy Offering Hiland has the opportunity to share in the joy of God s promise, through our giving to the Christmas Joy Offering. During Advent we remember God s promises to us. We gather together and wait in hope for the coming of the promised Emmanuel, God with us. And God, who has promised, is faithful, so on Christmas Day we celebrate that the promise is kept in the birth of Jesus Christ! The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) provides the opportunity for congregations to join this celebration of God s faithfulness by supporting those in need of help and hope. Thanks to your gifts, the Christmas Joy Offering is able to help provide financial assistance to individuals and families that have dedicated their lives to the church and also support racial ethnic education and leadership development for students attending Presbyterian-related schools and colleges. The promise made is one of hope in situations where hope can be hard to find. When we give, we declare that our hope is well founded, because it is God who has promised, and God who is faithful. Please prayerfully consider your generous support of the Christmas Joy offering, which we will collect during Advent through Sunday, December 25th. If you wish to donate, simply write a check to Hiland, marked Christmas Joy Offering or if you are donating cash, use a pew envelope and mark it for Christmas Joy Offering. Today the Christmas Joy Offering continues to provide hope for students at the PC(USA) racial ethnic schools: Menaul School in New Mexico, the Presbyterian Pan American School in Texas, and Stillman College in Alabama. Half of the Christmas Joy Offering goes toward scholarships and school operating costs. Your gifts will allow these schools and colleges to continue to support racial ethnic education and leadership development, to open doors to quality education, to provide supportive environments designed to help diverse students succeed, and to further PC(USA) s longstanding commitment to education that forges deeper connections to our faith. The Christmas Joy Offering also supports pastors, missionaries, and church workers in special need. Church workers spend a career sharing the Good News in word and deed. While congregations and pension plans provide financial stability for most church workers, some, especially those in small churches or retirement, face difficult circumstances when the rising costs of daily living turn even small challenges into financial crises. Your donation to the offering assists individuals and families who have dedicated their lives to the church by providing housing and income supplements, and also by helping with urgent financial challenges. For more information and some inspiring true stories, please see christmasjoy.html. Thank you for participating in this important Offering. By heeding Christ s call to love, we can change the world for all time. May your Christmas be blessed with the presence of God s Son. JOY to the World! 7 to serve Christ and share His love.
