FEBRUARY 2016 View From the Pulpit Beginnings. I think I have shared it with some of the Trinity folks that I sing in 3 groups: my Peace Lutheran Church choir, the NMSU Gospel choir, and a community chorus called SingingOut Las Cruces. Last weekend, SingingOut gave our winter concerts, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at First Christian Church, across the street from Las Cruces High School. These concerts were different from what we have done in the four and a half year history of the chorus in at least two respects: first the concert was not held in December, when there is a veritable plethora of artistic offerings in our town: concerts, plays, art openings. And the other difference was that our emcee, Dr. Tom Smith, Regent Professor of the NMSU Theater Department, wrote a story which united all the musical selections. Now all of the selections were basically love songs, from Emily Dickinson, Christopher Marlowe, the Persian poet Rumi and others but they centered on a house, which an elderly woman was selling after the death of her long-time partner, and was bought by a young couple. What these songs conveyed, and what we hope the audience realized is that each ending, is a chance for a new beginning. Martin Luther, writing in the Small Catechism, reminds us that each day the old [person] is drowned (in Holy Baptism) and a new person arises through repentance and faith. For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. (Psalm 30:5, KJV) Whatever trials or challenges we are facing individually or collectively, each ending is the opportunity for a new beginning. May the year 2016, and each day of it, be a new beginning for us all. Rev. 3 CROSSBEAMS Page 3 Thank you Lorelei! We would like to thank Lorelei Alvarez for being our Sunday School Superintendent the past couple of years. We are tremendously grateful for all the time you gave for our children and youth by preparing for and teaching Sunday School and by organizing and directing special activities. We realize how hard it was to get young children out the door Sunday mornings; how much more so when the mommy has to be at church early. Thanks for taking all the extra time and effort to be wholly present with us each week. It mattered. We appreciated having you teach and do so with all your heart and soul to provide the students with what is important and necessary; you are a faithful minister of Christ. While it seems like we tend to ask for volunteers quite a bit, rest assured, we are always thrilled when someone steps up to answer the call and get involved in a way perhaps they never have before! Thank you Lorelei for volunteering your time and being that person! God s blessings to you, Joe, Roland and Evangeline. HUNGER & POVERTY IN NEW MEXICO Every week right here in New Mexico, Roadrunner Food Bank provides hunger relief to 70,000 children, adults and seniors who do not have enough food. We distribute more than 30 million pounds of food statewide every year. Our Roadrunner Food Bank would not be able to meet the growing need for access to food sources in our state without your help. Hunger and Poverty in New Mexico Hunger and poverty go hand-in-hand in New Mexico. Eighty-three percent of families experiencing hunger earn $20,000 or less a year, leaving many families to make difficult choices. In fact, hungry households report they are making tradeoffs instead of being able to afford food. For example: 61% of households choose between food and utilities; 66% of households choose between food and transportation; 59% of households choose between food and medical care, and; 48% of households choose between food and housing As a partner, Trinity Lutheran is helping Roadrunner Food Bank to reach their mission to: FEED every hungry person today, SEED partnerships that build self-sufficiency for tomorrow and LEAD to achieve our vision of permanently ending hunger in New Mexico "A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor" (Proverbs 22:9, NIV) Souper Bowl Sunday is February 7 th On your way out of the sanctuary on Sunday, Feb. 7 th, ushers will be holding empty soup pots to receive your monetary donations to support our local soup kitchen, El Caldito who distribute approximately 90,000 free meals a year. For 30 years, El Caldito Soup Kitchen has been providing meals for the homeless and poverty-afflicted population of Las Cruces and its surrounding colonias. The soup kitchen was founded in 1984 and offered a mid-day meal twice a week. In 1998 it was relocated from the church kitchen at St. Andrew s Episcopal Church to its present facility on the campus of the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope. In 2004, El Caldito expanded its services to 5 days a week and at the end of that year, the program began providing a carryout sack lunch on Saturday. In 2010, Sunday lunch was added. So, as you plan your Super Bowl festivities and its abundant snacks, remember Las Cruces homeless population with a donation on Souper Bowl Sunday to support the El Caldito Soup Kitchen!

Page 4 Our Sunday school program needs your help. With the departure of Pastor Jerry, the Alvarez family has decided to not continue on at Trinity at this time. Lorelei Alvarez has resigned as our Sunday school superintendent. Her resignation along with the departure of Ann Reynolds, who served as a Sunday school teacher for our grade school children, puts Trinity s Sunday school program in jeopardy. In her resignation letter Mrs. Alvarez summarized a comment that Ellen Fox made at Pastor Jerry s exit meeting with Bishop Gonia and your church council. she appreciates seeing the children in church and appreciated Pastor Jerry s involvement with the kids (as did I), and she mentioned how important she believes it is for the next generation of young people to be a part of service and involved in church so that they grow up with a strong faith. Mrs. Alvarez goes on to say, This sentiment has been echoed to me over and over these past two years, and yet, when I ask people to step forward and actually teach classes, I do not get volunteers. Often, what I get is, I did that when I was younger, but I am retired now and really don t want to do it anymore. Do those words sound familiar to you? Because of her perceived lack of support on the part of the congregation for our Sunday school program, Mrs. Alvarez suggests that Trinity take a break from the education program through the transition process, and put it as one of the main topics to be discussed. I don t know about you, but the idea of putting our Sunday school program on hold during our transition is unacceptable to me. It could be months to even a year or more before Trinity moves from an interim pastor to a called Pastor, and our children as well as our adults cannot afford to be without the opportunity to learn about God s love for them that Sunday school offers. There are many things that congregations do to raise children as followers of Jesus. Faith formation can and must occur in a variety of places and in a variety of ways in worship, in Sunday school, in choir, in service work, at home, in the car, on mission trips, in Bible study, in prayer, in the hospital room, on the sports field, and yes, even in the popsicle-stick-glitter-covered-cross that hangs from ANNOUNCEMENTS CROSSBEAMS the family s refrigerator until it winds up carefully stashed in a shoebox and carried off to college by the child who made it all those years ago in a Sunday school classroom. So when you are asked to step up and help our Sunday school program to continue by volunteering to teach at least one Sunday in a month, I know I can count on you to say, Yes! I can help Ann Steinhoff, Sunday School Teacher THE RUMMAGE SALE IS COMING! Start sorting out the clutter and save those gently used treasures for the famous TLC Rummage Sale! The sale on the schedule for May 21. Set-up will begin a few days earlier. We will also have the snack bar open. In March we will begin recruiting help for this event. If you have questions, please contact Rebecca at or Mary at WORSHIP COMMITTEE MEETING: The Worship Committee will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 6:00 pm in the Choir Room. Agenda items include election of a chair and secretary, status of supply pastor and supply organist/ pianist, and planning for the Lent and Easter season. Anyone interested in lending their support and expertise to the work of this committee are welcome to attend. If you have questions, please contact Mary at CHOIR: Yes! For those that have expressed concern, Trinity still has a choir. However, due to not having an accompanist for us right now, the choir is temporarily on hold. I can't wait to hear the choir singing again, and I know you can't either, so I am looking for options. If anyone would be willing to play for us, or knows someone that will, please let me know. God Bless! Eric Sletten, Choir Director

CROSSBEAMS Page 5 Las Cruces Sun-News ASSEMBLY DATE 2016 APRIL Loveland, Colorado, at the Embassy Suites Encou ragin g Youth and Young Adults to be Lead ers in th e Church The Rocky Mountain Synod will continue to live into the ELCA's goal of expanded roles for youth and young adults in all expressions of our church. Rostered and lay leaders are encouraged to have conversations with the youth and young adults in their midst regarding the opportunity to serve on church council and as voting members at this year's synod assembly. A youth or young adult voting member is not an additional voting member. The youth or young adult is one of your congregation's allotted voting members. Dear Friends in Christ, Many Voices, One Song is the theme for this year s Assembly. Synod Assemblies offer all of us an opportunity to discover and celebrate the breadth of what we are able to do together as the Rocky Mountain Synod. In this year s gathering we will connect the dots on all of our ministries to discover how our individual voices are joined together to sing one wondrous song about God s love loosed in the world through Jesus. Voting members and guests will be given an opportunity to plunge into one of these ministries in depth, and together we will celebrate how all the melodic lines are woven together in our witness to a world which needs to hear this song deeply. Dr. Shauna Hannon, faculty member from Pacific Lutheran School of Theology in Berkeley, California and rostered leader in our Rocky Mountain Synod will be with us, guiding our theological reflection on what these connections mean for us and for the world. As we look to gather our many voices together this spring, we encourage congregations to seek out new voting members, so that we may fully experience the richness of the many, diverse voices in our Rocky Mountain Synod. In addition, opportunities will be provided especially for youth voting members to connect with other youth while still fully participating in the assembly including a post worship party on the first night of the assembly. Stay tuned for more information regarding opportunities for your youth voting members! Come to Loveland and be part of the music! Bishop Jim Gonia

Page 6 FROM THE TREASURER Posted on the financial bulletin board in the hall from the Narthex to the Fellowship Hall is December s Treasurer s Report and Financial Secretary s Report. At the January 17, 2016 Congregational meeting, Trinity adopted a budget of $177,582 with an austere spending plan. While I won t know until mid-february how we are doing with income and spending, I feel confident that all members and friends of Trinity will be supportive of our church as stated in the prayer we pray each Sunday: Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us ourselves, our time, and our possessions. January 31 st sees Barb Thomas resigning as Financial Secretary. I want to personally thank her for all the support she has given to me as well as for the many hours she has given to the job of seeing that our contributions are posted correctly. As per our new constitution, the position of Financial Secretary is appointed by your church council. We posted the opening in the church bulletin and in the Crossbeams. The council had one applicant, Mary Sletten. On January 17, 2016, you church council voted to appoint Mary Sletten to the position of Financial Secretary, effective February 1,, If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to get into contact with me; atsteinhoff@msn.com Blessings to you, Ann Steinhoff, Trinity s Church Treasurer CROSSBEAMS If you would like further information on this, please contact me. The piano was placed back in the front of the Sanctuary for Rosalyn Stolee to play for Sunday service. As you walk around the church on Sundays, or any other day you are at the church, please keep an eye out for any issues around the building or grounds. If you see anything, please let myself or any other member of the B&G Committee know about the issue. The Building and Grounds Committee is meeting the 2nd of February at 6PM. All are welcome. God Bless! Eric Sletten, Building and Grounds Committee Chairperson FROM BUILDING & GROUNDS While checking out the roof this month, I found an unexpected surprise on the top of the Fellowship hall. Over in the southwest corner, there was a two foot tall mulberry tree growing in the gutter. Normally I'm pretty fond of trees, but not when they are on the roof! The tree was removed. Also, in the last snowstorm we had, several branches broke off of the tree located at the corner of the parking lot. Thanks to John Sletten for cleaning those up. Due to several false alarms with the security system in the last several months, the alarm system usage was looked into. To try to prevent any further false alarms, the system has been set to automatically turn on at 10PM, and turn off at 6AM, seven days a week. If you have an access code for the system, please do not set the system manually.

Many thanks to all for assistance before, during, and after! Please see the BSC Facebook for more information about how you can be involved with each of these groups. Border Servant Corps seeks to provide an opportunity for volunteers to work for justice, serve their neighbor, and walk humbly with their God. This month, BSC is proud to introduce Cassie Chee, BSC volunteer at the Southwest Asylum & Migration Institute Hi all! My name is Cassie Chee and I am a current Border Servant Corps (BSC) volunteer living in Las Cruces. For those of you who don t know about BSC, it is an organization that brings volunteers to the U.S.-Mexico border to learn about issues plaguing border communities and to work towards systemic change. I have loved my experience so far and have learned so much about social justice issues as they pertain to the border region. For the past six months, I served at a legal services nonprofit aiding immigrants who have been victims of crimes in the U.S., primarily domestic violence. Due to internal issues this organization is no longer able to host me, but I have found another wonderful organization in the area that provides affordable and pro bono legal immigration services called the Southwest Asylum and Migration Institute (SAMI where I look forward to serving for the remainder of my time of service with BSC. From my time in the border region, I have come to learn how necessary this type of legal work is here. SAMI represents the underrepresented immigrant, in particular individuals fleeing violence in Mexico, Central America, and beyond. With the addition of my position, I will directly contribute to increasing SAMI s efficiency in completing immigration applications and other tasks so that more clients can be served. SAMI has a very small staff, and it will be very valuable to have a volunteer aiding in the large workload that the organization has. Overall, I want to serve with SAMI because it is one of the few immigration legal service nonprofits in southern New Mexico seeking to address this large community need. My change in organizations is a unique one. While BSC volunteers do not typically fundraise for their position, I have requested to do so in order to serve with SAMI. As a small non-profit that does much of its work pro bono, SAMI does not have the funding to support my position with them this year. For this reason, I am fundraising for my position at SAMI so I can complete my service year at this organization doing great work. If you or anyone you know supports this mission, I could really use your support! Donations in my name can be sent to BSC (online or by mail) or SAMI, or you can donate directly online at gofund.me/myvolunteeryear. I am so thankful for any support you can give me to continue doing work that is so important to me! We thank you for all of the ways you support Border Servant Corps! If you have any questions or would like to become more involved with BSC, please contact us at info@borderservantcorps.org or (575) Ext. 16. Do justice. Love kindness. Walk humbly.

Page 8 Who Should Run the Congregation? By Scott Seeke 01/21/16 Seven days from today, I will begin a new call. I was nervous about telling the president of my current congregation that I was leaving. Over lunch I informed him and explained my reasons. I was relieved that he understood. We talked about the future for that congregation, what I thought and saw, and laughed over some good memories. Despite all that, it was the joke he made at the end that stuck with me. It s OK, he teased. You pastors are always coming and going. We laughed at the time, but as I thought about it more, the humor of that statement faded. He was right. Pastors change congregations often. I will be the fourth pastor in my next congregation s 35-year history, and they ve had far less transition than my last call. I once visited a congregation that was 150 years old, and they had a wall of photographs and paintings of their pastors. I counted almost 50 50! Their average tenure was three years. The reasons vary, but by and large the president of my congregation was right. Indeed, pastors come and go. The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized that members also come and go. Oh, sure, there are some who sit in the same pew for decades. But while they are doing that, others are coming and going around them. The reasons also vary. Sometimes it is simply the circle of life. Babies are born, people die; these things happen. Sometimes there are schisms that cause members to leave or wonderful new programs that attract new blood. The reasons vary, but it s not just pastors who come and go. It s also members. All of this transition made me wonder who should be running our congregations. Pastors come and go, so having pastors run congregations does not seem like the way to go. Same thing with members. With all these people coming and going, who should run our congregations? There s only one person left, and that s God. Since it s God s church anyway, it seems to me that God should run it. God was there before there were members or a pastor, and God will be there when all of us are gone. Plus, I m pretty sure God has a better idea of what to do in a given situation than all of us put together. It s not the pastors or the members who should be running our congregations. It s God. CROSSBEAMS So the next time my congregation has a decision to make, that s how I m going to approach it. I m not going to treat it like my congregation, or even the member s congregation. I m going to let God make the decision. Whether it s what to do in worship, how to run a program, or what color napkins we use, I m going to leave every decision up to God. I ve never been part of a congregation like that before, but it sounds like one I could stay at forever. Scott Seeke will soon begin serving as the pastor of Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Lawrenceville, Ga. THIS IS CHRIST'S CHURCH. THERE IS A PLACE FOR YOU HERE. We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God's grace. Liberated by our faith, we embrace you as a whole person questions, complexities and all. Join us as we do God's work in Christ's name for the life of the world. Take the Leftovers with Dignity By Terri Mork Speirs It was Wednesday and Viviana told me she couldn't get food until Friday. Viviana (not her real name) had young children at home and was eyeing the leftovers. We were cleaning up after serving a full course meal for 150 people, a weekly event in our church we call Beloved Community, and there was extra food to put away. Viviana told me she didn't want to take the leftovers that others might want, but I talked her into taking them. My conscience was on the line. I put the food containers into a plastic bag so it wouldn't look conspicuous that she was taking the leftovers home and asked her to wait so I could forage the church refrigerator for more, including a gallon of milk. There were apples and oranges atop the counter. Maybe I should have run to the grocery store for a gift card. I could have asked a pastor to come up with assistance from a church fund for her. I wanted to fix Viviana's life right then and there. Continued on next page

CROSSBEAMS Page 9 She was anguished in at least two ways she had no food at home and she had to ask for the leftovers. I did my best to not hold a look of pity on my face as she told me her cupboards had never looked so bare, that she'd never been in this situation before. I'm a giver not a taker, Viviana said. And by the way, she worked full time. She had scheduled a few hours of vacation time from her job so she could volunteer her afternoon to cook dinner for Beloved Community, but she had no food at home. "We're all givers and takers," I said. What do you say to a friend who has no food without sounding patronizing or just plain dumb? In future weeks others joined me in quietly bagging up leftovers for our friend and co-volunteer. Viviana probably doesn t even know she inadvertently started a new practice at our Wednesday night meals. These days we handle leftovers differently. The cooking teams automatically box up the uneaten food after the meals and pile the containers on the buffet line, kind of like a Beloved Community Part II. We announce it from the microphone, To-go boxes available. We remove the embarrassment factor by opening it up to all. I m not sure who exactly takes the boxes home (besides me sometimes, and our growing population of homeless guests). The boxes simply disappear and when I m on the clean-up crew that s exactly what I want to see. One thing I do know: If anyone in that banquet room needs food to take home they can pick up a box of the most delicious leftovers in town without giving up their dignity in return. Viviana made that happen. Terrie Mork Speirs, attends St. John Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Tell Your Story By Pastor Mark Anderson Chick Lane wrote a wonderful book entitled Ask, Thank, Tell. He encourages congregations to ask the members for financial support, thank them for that support and then tell them what kind of great ministry was made possible by that gift. I H A VE N EVE R HE AR D A NY O NE SAY I G A VE THAT OR G A N IZATION MONEY NOW I H OP E THEY N EVE R TEL L ME H O W THEY SPENT IT. In the same way, I have never heard anyone say that organization never tells me how my contributions make a difference so I ll send them more money next year. What I do see, is that if I make a contribution to a school social service I will soon get communications with heartwarming stories about successful and grateful students or children yanked back from the brink of disaster. I W ILL A L SO BE C O N STANTLY REMINDE D OF H O W MY G IFT MAD E A LL THIS P O SSIBLE. A generation ago members simply gave to their congregation and those who wondered what ministries were funded by their gifts could attend an annual budget hearing between services. N OW, MEMBER S W A N T TO KNO W H O W THE IR G IFTS AR E SPENT Not because they don t trust the congregation, but because they want to feel a greater connection to the ministries. When the congregation fails to communicate with the members, we rob them of the spiritual growth they could have as they connect with the congregation s ministry. Therefore, I suggest that as a part of the stewardship education congregations consider the following: C O MMUNICATE ON MULTIPLE PLATFO RMS Use the newsletter, bulletin inserts, the web page, Facebook, twitter, and Instagram, to let folks know the various life changing ministries that the congregation is involved in. This will also communicate to the members how their offerings are being used across the congregation and the larger church. T R A N SFOR M A N N O U NCE MENTS INTO E NG A G E ME N TS Use more photos, more stories, and more firsthand narratives in all our communications. Example of an Announcement: Last week more than 50 children attended VBS. Example of Engagement: Little Mason had never been to Saint John, or to any church for that matter, in her eight short years. That is until best friend, Sydney, invited her to Vacation Bible School. The two girls laughed, played, did crafts, sang songs, and enjoyed treats. In the midst of all that fun, Mason also heard the Good News of the Love of Jesus Christ and now she wants to return to Saint John for Sunday school and to bring her siblings. What is your fondest memory of VBS? (Insert photo of kids having fun) R E P O ST OR RE PR INT THE BEST OF MATE R IAL S F R O M THE S Y N O D AND ELCA. Because some of the member s offerings support ministries of the larger church, we want to communicate them as well. However, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. The Synod and ELCA create many pieces of excellent material that can be reprinted or reposted with permission. To find these subscribe to the Synod Newsletter and follow the Synod and ELCA on Facebook and twitter. Pastor Mark Anderson, Assistant to the Bishop
