A weekly GraceNote from Adventist Review editor Bill Knott Grace is always a gift, but never simply an option. We aren t invited or allowed--to pick the plan that saves us. Just as there is no other name by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12), so there is no alternative to grace as God s way of saving us: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God (Eph 2:8). In Jesus on His cross we meet God s best and only offer: there is no B, C, D, or E. Accept the stark, unwavering reality of God s amazing choice. And stay in grace. -Bill Knott Here's Your Chance to Organize a Free Clinic Would you like to see a free Seventh-day Adventist medical clinic in your town? Read more 2

In a small bowl add garlic and salt. While whisking with a fork, add olive oil and lemon juice until well homogenized. Add a couple shakes of thyme and red pepper. Use a spoon to remove the gills and the stem underneath the cap of the mushroom. Wash the mushrooms and pat them dry with a paper towel. Brush all sides with some of the marinade. Put mushrooms on a cookie sheet caps down and bake for 15 minutes. Flip around, add some more of the marinade, and poke with a fork all around so the marinade soaks in and the extra liquid comes out. 4

Continue baking, flipping caps after another 10 minutes, poke on the top, add some more marinade, and continue baking until mushrooms are tender (5-10 minutes). When cooked through, take out and serve with whole wheat artisan bread, sautéed red onion (in water), arugula, and heirloom tomato slices. 8 Andrew McChesney News editor, Adventist Review Here's Your Chance to Organize a Free Adventist Clinic Your Best Pathway to Health will offer a special training at its next free clinic in Beckley, West Virginia. POSTED JUNE 21, 2016 ould you like to see a free Seventh-day Adventist medical clinic in your town? W Now is your chance. Your Best Pathway to Health the Adventist organization that has brought more than $77 million in free services to more than 20,000 patients in five U.S. cities will offer a one-day seminar on how to organize a free clinic at its next free clinic in July. All volunteers at the free clinic in Beckley, West Virginia, are invited to attend the training on Sunday, July 17. We encourage anyone interested in organizing a community-based Pathway to Health clinic to volunteer in Beckley and to attend the training provided, Ken Denslow, assistant to the president of the Adventist Church s North American Division, said in a statement. Pathway to Health, which held its largest mega-clinic in April, treating 8,538 patients over three days in Los Angeles, is now preparing for its first small-town clinic. It hopes to provide a wide range of medical, dental, and vision services to 1,500 people from July 13 to 15 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center in Beckley, a town of 17,600 people located a five-hour drive southwest of Washington D.C. Leaders of the North American Division, who have cooperated with Pathway to Health and ASI at previous mega-clinics, have indicated that they are especially excited about the Beckley event and the first-time training for volunteers. In addition to the fact that Beckley offers East Coast residents their first chance to volunteer closer to home, of significance is the training being offered at the West Virginia event, Julio C. Muñoz, the division s associate communication director, said in a statement ed to Adventist congregations across North America. Organizers are offering all attending volunteers educational components that will allow local communities to organize smaller Pathway to Health events around the country. Read how a Sabbath School class is the brainchild behind the Beckley free clinic Pathway to Health, meanwhile, renewed its own call for volunteers and donations on its Facebook page on Monday. In particular, the clinic needs more dentists, optometrists, and medical specialists, in particular gynecologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, and radiologists, it said. In another development, Pathway to Health president Lela Lewis said she was delighted that the authorities were providing unprecedented support to the Beckley event. She said the state medical board, the governor s office, and many other state officials were seeking out Pathway to Health organizers and assisting with needed licenses, certifications, registrations, or temporary permits to practice at the event. We have never received the reception that we are receiving from the state capital as we are in West Virginia, Lewis said. God has something really big planned. Please continue to pray and assist in any way you can for more dentists and optometrists and specialists, including gynecologists in particular. Sign up here to volunteer or donate. 11 Surfing Pastor Shares Waterproof Bibles in Brazil When Vinícius Metzker is not in the water, he is busy walking the beach, catching up with friends and making new ones. POSTED JUNE 23, 2016, Adventist Mission eet Vinícius Metzker, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor in Brazil who shares God s love with his community through a surfing ministry. M Surfing is huge in Brazil, and so is Metzker s commitment to reaching surfers for Jesus. Several times a week he goes to the beach to teach free classes, to mingle with people, and to give them an unusual gift a waterproof Bible. So many people have requested lessons with Metzker that he can t accommodate them all. But for the hundreds of people he teaches, the experience has often been life changing. Before heading out to the breakers, each class always stops for a short worship and prayer together. When I meet with a group for the first time, I talk with them about the things they re most familiar with in this case, the sea, Metzker said. I tell them that God made the waves, and when they see that He had them in mind when He created the world, it begins to make sense to them that they re part of His creation too. It becomes easier for them to accept that God made us and loves us. After the lesson, Metzker paddled up to some of his students. Check this out! he invited, dunking a small book in the water. It s a waterproof Bible! Seriously? one guy asked. That s awesome. Let me see it! It s yours to keep, Metzker told him. And I have plenty more if the rest of you want one. The students responded warmly to Metzker, whom they affectionately called Pastor Vini. Vinícius Metzker begins each surfing class with worship. (Adventist Mission) When Metzker is not in the water, he is busy walking the beach near São José dos Campos, Brazil, catching up with friends and making new ones. He said it is really important to him to show people that God is a true friend. In order to communicate His love to people s hearts, I need to be that kind of friend myself, he said. I can t just talk about it. I have to live it. Metzker s actions brought to mind a comment that Adventist Church cofounder Ellen G. White wrote about Jesus method of ministry. She said: The Saviour mingled with men

as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, Follow Me (Ministry of Healing, p. 143). Metzker is following Jesus example, and he said the results are amazing. I have so many beautiful stories of people who have come to know and love Jesus, he said. People who may not have been reached for Him any other way. Here at the beach they begin to discover Jesus in nature. And in time, they tell me, I want to learn more. Please tell me more about this God! Then we study together in their homes. They come to church, where they participate in worship and prayer and begin to have a real connection with God. Many of them have given their hearts to Jesus and been baptized. Indeed, Metzker s love for Jesus propels him to reach out in love to others just like a wave moves a surf board. Catch a wave with pastor Vinicius "Vini" Metzker in Brazil. (Adventist Mission) Earley Simon is a video and TV producer for Adventist Mission at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. 14 5 Adventist Churches Offer Free Funerals After Orlando Mass Shooting A pastor explains that his church wants to show compassion in a time of crisis. POSTED JUNE 21, 2016 L, North American Division ess than 36 hours after the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, the Forest Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church in the nearby city of Apopka announced on Facebook that it would host, free of charge, funeral services for those killed. The post said the church is extending their availability for FREE funeral services for any LGBT victims of the #thepulse shooting. The church also offered to stream the services live on the Internet for family and friends who could not attend. A short time after the Forest Lake announcement appeared, four additional Adventist churches declared that they also would host funeral services for free: the Forest City Spanish church (Altamonte Springs), Altamonte Springs Church (Altamonte Springs), Florida Hospital Church (Orlando), and Orlando Central church (Orlando). Several families have expressed interest in the free funerals for their loved ones, who were among the 49 people killed in the June 12 shooting, but none had accepted the offer as of June 21. "We see this as an opportunity for us to serve and show compassion in this time of crisis, said Geoff Patterson, senior pastor of the Forest Lake church, which is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Orlando. The need for a church venue for services became apparent after families expressed funeral concerns to local chaplains. Two Forest City Spanish pastors, Jorge Figueroa and Pablo Gaitán, and one of the church s elders, Laura Fernandez, were among the chaplains who helped break the devastating news to some of the victims families. They did so in a private room along with officers from the Orlando Police Department hours after the tragedy. We comforted them and offered our church's help in any shape or form for the next 24 hours, Gaitán said. We contacted consulates, FBI, local county offices, and other organizations to bring assistance to them. Forest Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church displayed this announcement on its Facebook page less than 36 hours after the Orlando mass shooting on June 12. Gaitán, an associate pastor at the Forest City Spanish church, said the families were thankful and exchanged information with the church representatives. Read also: North American Division Issues Statement on Mass Shooting in Orlando, Florida Post Goes Viral The original Forest Lake church Facebook post quickly went viral and drew many positive comments. About 24 hours after the church s announcement on Facebook, the post had been shared nearly 24,000 times with more than 13,000 likes and reactions, and more than 900 comments, largely expressing compassion, love, and gratitude. I was very happy to see this post, wrote Valerie Van Asperen Williams, from California, on Forest Lake church s Facebook page. The people in this church are being Jesus to those suffering this horrific loss. Thank you for doing that for them.

In another comment, George W. Brown, from Florida, wrote: The Forest Lake Seventhday Adventist Church deserves our highest commendation for its impressive display of compassion. It's an eloquent example of the unconditional love taught and exemplified by Jesus Christ to suffering human beings. What the church is graciously offering the victims of this horrific crime is precisely what Christ our perfect example would offer unconditional love and compassion. Click here for ways to help after the Orlando shooting, shared by Florida Conference. Forest Lake church leaders said they were glad to see the overwhelmingly positive response from church members, their Facebook friends, and the community at large. It s terrific that other Adventist and non-adventist churches are responding, said Bernie Anderson, pastor for collegiate and young adults. The response in central Florida and beyond has been extraordinary. Response Keeps Growing The response has grown, with the Adventist Church s Florida Conference posting a list on its website of the Adventist churches available for victim funerals. I think it's been powerful to see our members share their appreciation that their church is stepping up to meet a need, Anderson said. I know there are members who have shared this far and wide with friends and the media. We've also had members who speak Spanish call in and offer to translate or interpret for the services. Anderson s wife, Christina, a certified child life specialist at Nemours Children s Hospital, played a key role in the offer for free funerals. She learned from hospital chaplains working with families who lost loved ones in the shooting that many were expressing concern over finding church venues for funerals. She shared this information with her husband who, in turn, discussed it with Patterson and Roger Anderson, Forest Lake church s administrative pastor. The ministry team then moved forward in letting the community know the church was available. This is an opportunity to show compassion, said Walter Castro, Florida Conference lay ministries coordinator, during a ministries teleconference on June 14. Most of the victims were Latino. After the media is gone a week from now, things will be back to normal. But a lot of people will still be hurting. We want to show our love and compassion, and show to the younger generation that we are here for people. He added: We are not here to do PR for the Adventist Church. We are here to show people that we care. We are a church with compassion for whoever is suffering. A. Lee Bennett Jr., associate director of communication for the Florida Conference, contributed to this report. 17 Solomon Maphosa Elected New SID President Gideon P. Reyneke replaces Maphosa as the executive secretary of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division. POSTED JUNE 23, 2016 S olomon Maphosa, a Zimbabwean national and longtime administrator in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has been elected president of the Southern Africa- Indian Ocean Division (SID). The General Conference Executive Committee voted Wednesday for Maphosa, who most recently served as the division s executive secretary, to replace Paul Ratsara as president. Pastor Maphosa has a great love for God's church and for evangelistic outreach and mission, General Conference president Ted N.C. Wilson said Thursday. I have known Pastor Maphosa for many years, and it will be a privilege to work closely with him since, as with all division presidents, he also will be a General Conference vice president, Wilson said. Please pray for Pastor and Mrs. Maphosa as they carry the spiritual responsibility of focusing the vision of God's people in SID on Total Member Involvement and the Lord s soon coming. Maphosa, a native of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, received his undergraduate degree in theology from Andrews University at the campus of Solusi University in Zimbabwe and later graduated with a master s in religion and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Andrews University. He has served in a variety of roles in the church, including assistant evangelist, district pastor, West Zimbabwe Field stewardship director ( ), West Zimbabwe Conference youth director ( ), West Zimbabwe Conference executive Solomon Maphosa (David Sherwin / AR) secretary (1995), Zambesi Union executive secretary ( ), and Zimbabwe Union Conference president ( ). He had served as the division s executive secretary since Maphosa is married to Savie Maphosa (nee Zikhali), and they have a son, two daughters, and four grandchildren. The Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division has about 3 million church members and covers 20 countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Ratsara resigned as division president on May 31. The General Conference Executive Committee elected Maphosa on June 22. A day before the vote, the Executive Committee of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division voted to recommend Maphosa s candidacy to the General Conference Executive Committee. "The Holy Spirit was very much present in the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division Executive Committee process on Tuesday, June 21, for the selection of a recommended name for division president and subsequently division secretary, said Wilson, who attended the meeting in South Africa. We praise God for His leading and the sweet spirit exhibited in the committee. We engaged in much prayer interspersed throughout the process. We spent an appropriate amount of time on the needed characteristics for a president. We had an open process of discussion and then voting using secret ballots.

The division committee chose Pastor Maphosa as the recommended president at the conclusion of the process. The General Conference Executive Committee elected Gideon P. Reyneke as the new executive secretary of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division. Reyneke previously worked as the division s field secretary and director of the division s Sabbath School and Personal Ministries department. Goodwell Nthani remains the division s treasurer. New division executive secretary Gideon P. Reyneke, left, and treasurer Goodwell Nthani. (ANN) Pray for this new administrative team, Wilson said.
